CTC member and legendary cycle tourist Ian Hibell died after he was struck by a car while cycling through Greece. Ian was an inspiration to many cyclists and was honoured in 2003 by CTC. Family friend Nic Henderson told the Times that: ''He gained a taste for travelling during his RAF service in the 1950s. He has pushed, dragged or carried his bike from the fringes of the Antarctica to the jungles of the Amazon, from the Arctic to the remoter islands of Indonesia.'' A note from Ian’s family has been posted on CTC’s forum.
Boris wants to let cars back in to London
One of the Mayor of London’s first steps was to ditch the Emissions-Related Congestion Charge scheme. Now he has launched a public consultation on whether to scrap the ‘Western Extension’, which has reduced motor traffic by 30,000 vehicles a day and last year generated £137m revenue for public transport, allowing Transport for London to spend more on cycling provision. Let them know what you think here.
In 2002 Jamie Bianchini started out on a journey to visit as many countries on a tandem-single mountain bike as he could. He also picks up guest riders. Jamie emailed Newsnet to say he is currently in Northern Ireland and is heading through Wales and England and would welcome any CTC member who would like to ride along with him. If you fancy the adventure and are an experienced cyclist more information can be found on Peace Pedaler’s website.
CTC Caped Crusaders
If you were one of the many CTC members who volunteered to be filmed cycling in a cape for BBC One’s ident, you can watch yourself online through this ident website. I can’t tell which cyclists are CTC members, can you?
Right to Ride rep for Weymouth, Ken Reed, has been campaigning against road designs being put into place in time for the sailing event in the 2012 Olympics. The council have reversed a decision to allow cycling on the promenade and cyclists will now have to use a dangerous one-way system. Ken is also involved in the Bypass the Bypass campaign, opposing the proposed Weymouth Relief Road. To campaign for cycling in your local area and join the Right to Ride Network or email righttoride@... for more information.
All aboard the bike bus
The wheels on this bus do indeed go round and round, but actually if we’re honest it’s not really bus. It’s organised by a CTC member and is a group of cyclists travelling together from Keighley to Bradford. To see the timetable and find out more visit the Aire Valley Bike Bus website.
Give a little time
Volunteers are needed to help with CTC’s mountain bike event for teenagers in Yorkshire. It’s taking place at the finish of the Tour of Britain on 11th September. If you can give a little time to help, contact CTC’s Cycle Champions Officer in North Yorkshire Martyn Bolt.
‘Strop gear’
It seems like summer is over, without any proper sunshine and blue skies. So who is to blame? According to Jeremy Clarkson it’s all the fault of us cyclists, who are stopping global warming. However, our friends at bikemagic have also been on the case – their conclusion is that summer has been recalled.

Member Benefit: It’s good to recycle
If you have an old mobile phone rattling around at the bottom of the kitchen drawer you can recycle it and raise cash for CTC. All you have to do is pop it in a jiffy bag (do not include your phone charger) and send it to the following free post address: CTC phone recycling, Freepost Lon16281, London, WC1N 3BR. Each phone is worth an average of £4 to us, and the money raised helps support the campaigning work we do, as well as being good for the environment.
