I would be very grateful if you could circulate this request from an
Islington cyclist to your groups.
Many thanks, Alison
The London Cycle Quest (LCQ).
You may know that there is a British Cycle Quest run by the CTC. This
invites you to visit 402 places in the UK from Shetland to Cornwall
and Wales to Suffolk. It's a great way of seeing places in the
country you might never have gone to. But, it is a
big challenge.
So, I have it in mind to devise a similar challenge for cyclists in
London. If each borough chooses 6 places that are worthy of visiting,
we would have about 200 LCQ spots. Cyclists would then be invited to
buy a list of them, visit them to answer a simple question about the
place, send back their answers and receive a Well Done and a
Certificate, but also, and even better, the satisfaction of having
completed a Big Challenge and visited parts they never knew existed.
Furthermore, I intend to sell the list of LCQs on behalf of charity
and the LCC. The former is a charity which works for speech-impaired
children for/with whom I have done a lot of cycling (watch out for
2009's Afasic Ride) and the latter will receive a cut for every copy
they sell by advertising it in the LC magazine. I'm looking at a
fiver for the lot or £3 each for North and South London with £2 to
LCC, £2
to Afasic and £1 to cover post and print.
What has this to do with you? Could you or your LCC group, choose 6
place is your borough deemed worthy of a visit by a cyclist. This
place needs to be:
- get-attable for free and in daylight at any time
- easily and as safely as possible got to by bike
- interesting; the 'thing' itself can be dull, but the surroundings
good (e.g. the BCQ asks you whose names appear on a very dull thing
about councillors; but it is on Bachy Head); or the 'thing' can be
interesting in itself but in poor surroundings (eg the BCQ gets you
to visit a wonderful bridge in a very boring Midlands town); or, best
of all, a combination of the two - unlikely to change in the next
year or three.
The LCQ question would then look like this (a fictional example):
"Go to Market Street N92. Half way down is a church dedicated to St
Cyclista.
What animal is depicted over the door
from Market St."
Please be as inventive as you like. Spread them round the borough.
Include a view. Or a pub or two. Anything weird and whacky. A cycle
facility you are proud of.
I shall then compile all the LCQs, visit them and make sure they're
all fine and balanced and then publish the Book of the Quest.
Hopefully by early summer next year.
And I would be very very grateful for any help you and yours can give
me. If you need to know more call (020) 7704 1884 or j.edwards530@ ...
Thank you very much indeed.
