Hi
Paul
I agree with you, children do need male role model around, where i am based there is only one male nurse, and most of the doctors are males. Many children dont have fathers around and this has be there first experience with males, they do need to see male has someone they can approach to and plays with them and not only when they do see males around they are usually there to give them treatment.

Sorry not to reply sooner, but I've only just discovered this group!
As one of the few male HPS' around I think its a brilliant idea for a
special project. I personally believe that a mix of male/female staff
working in children's wards is really important. I'm the only male
member of staff (apart from doctors) in the paediatric department I
work in and I feel that we need more males working with children
generally, not only in play but also in nursing. I am the only HPS in
our Trust, and I think that it is important for children (and
parents) to see a male involved in play and care. It is also really
helpful when dealing with boys on the ward, especially the
adolescents, who can feel a bit more awkward around females.
I certainly think we need more male HPS staff. I've been to several
conferences and quite a few meetings where I've been the only male
HPS present - which is a shame...
Good luck with the project. If you need any more help feel free to
