Hi Jo,

Thanks for your message - the course is going well and I'm nearly finished - last assignment and presentation to complete. Also, thanks again for your information, it was really useful and helped me a great deal - in fact the information given by everyone was really useful and thought provoking. I hope to keep in touch with you every now and then if that's ok, as I'm sure I'll have future questions!!

Kind Regards,

Dan

their is any community play specialists who have done a community based version

Hi matthew

It great that your interested we need more men in the profession.  I am due to finish the course in December.  I have two children myself and work full time and travel to Edinburgh every week for a days college.  Its been hard but worth it.  There are 6 units and each assignment is about 5000 words. There is alot of research involved and if you are not supervised by a qualified HPS you will have to do 200 hours under supervision.  It is hard work and a lot has been done in the twilight hours when the kids are in bed but its a really rewarding job.  We had one male on our course and 16 women all I can say is he will be like gold dust I believe children need more males in a very female orientated environment.  If you want more info the HPSET (hospital play specialist education trust) and NAHPS (national association of hospital play specialists) is worth looking at.

Good luck

Hope this helps
Amanda

Hi Laura,

I work on a very large gen peads ward within a dgh, we have 38 beds and our ages range from 0-18.  We are generally full, with another 4 escalation beds if necessary! currently there is only one play specialist to look after the ward! as you can imagine its very busy! so good planning is essential.  I start the day by prepping children who are off to theatre, then I prioritise who i will spend time with, usually our long term children, set up an arts and crafts activity in the play room and then begin to work my way round the ward, introducing myself and the service we provide, from then on i fill my time, children always come first, but there is a fair amount of housekeeping to do, emails, telephone calls and cleaning all need to be done.  I have been doing this job for the past ten years and couldnt imagine doing anything else, we face different challenges everyday, but make a world of difference to a chlds experience.  No two days are ever the same, its not always good news, but we do the best we can to make sure that the children are looked after and prepared for whatever they have to go through! good luck on the course and if you need any other information, just let me know! best wishes    Jo

Hi Sian
I am the play Service coordinator at Southend hospital, we have terrible trouble finding outside entertainment for the children, apart from a very shabby Clown (who frightens the children to death), we dont have anyone.
Pod said they would try to come, but they dont seem to have remembered us. We used to have the Scouts come once a week, the children loved that, but the scout leader gave it up.
I am back in touch with the guides and Scouts, hope the will be interested.

As for Games machines, I put a notice in the parents room, and made sure I mentioned it to parents whe I wasnt able to give their child a machine, not long after we had our  first donation of a playstation and then the gave games too.

Can I ask who is CREATE?

Kind Regards
Jackie Keeble

Dear All,
My name is Sian and I am a Play Specailist on a busy childrens ward in a DGL.( District General)in Farnborough, Kent

I am trying to compile a list of free entertainers who are CRB checked that would come and entertain on my ward for a hour.

I am already lucky to work with POD, Music in Hospitals and CREATE, but wondered if anyone has any other ideas.
I am slo looking to update our games systems, we were lucky to be donated a XBOX 360 last year, and have a starlight unit with a ninetendo, but could really do with a couple of play stations with leads, any ideas gratefully recieved.

Cheers
Sian

Hi,
I'm a newbie too.
I'm a nanny at the moment but really want to get into Hospital Play Specialism.
I've got my interview for college on wed to try and get on the course - the
interview sounds quite daunting but i'm sure i'll be ok. Volunteering is a good
idea, i'm sure hospital alaways need extra help.
