At stanmore you go to college every tuesday 9am-4pm and some block weeks where you have to attend the whole week but their is only two or three of these, this allows you to do part time work as you study ( i worked for a nursery nurse agency, so the work was really flexible, i could work more or less depending on the work load). The course is a year and your placement is unpaid i'm afraid, and you have to go once a week there too this placement needs to add up to 200hrs altogether. I started by doing a placement but then i was lucky enough to get paid work as a hospital play assistant which i've been doing for about 5weeks now.

I'm sure that all your experience as a play worker will be very useful on course, but don't expect it to be easy. Everyone i know has really enjoyed it but found it to be hard work and a lot to do.
Each college runs their course slightly differently but the work usually includes a 5000 word project on a subject of your choice; a collection of observations on children ranging between 0-18 yrs; a case study; a project
to design and make a toy or piece of equipment for a child in hospital; designing the layout and contents of a hospital playroom; and a professional portfolio which includes play programmes, reports on different dept/areas of the hospital and diaries of your days at placements.
You will also have a range of hospital play specialist speakers talking about different areas of the profession inaddition to lectures from your normal tutors. I hope this is the sort of thing you wanted to know, i'm sure you will love the course, and it does train you to do the best job in the world as far as i'm concerned.
Do let me know if the course is different to this, as i would be very interested to hear about it, and give me a shout if there is anything i can do to help.
Also please, please, please, could you pass on the details of this hospital play specialist chat room to all the other students on you
course and any other play staff you meet at your placements. This chat room is only as good as the amount of people using it.

I had hep B, when i asked to do placement at an hospital they wanted to check my health they asked by GP, the things they needed to know. io know when i went for an interview they did says i might have it. But again i think thats depends on if you already had it and on your health too. Talking about injection last week i observed a child whi had to have blood taken out. I would really recommed you get a place in hospital so you can build you confidence on her weakness, becasue if you not about injection the children will pick up on it.

ALthough you don't have to to be vaccinated for Hep B for the course i really do recomend you do have it for your own protection. It's passed in all body fluids
and in is suggested that all people who work with any care group should have it. Also if you get a post in a hospital they will definatly want you to have it.
Here comes the bad news, sorry it is a course of 3 injections followed by a blood test to see if you have gained immunity, possibly followed by a booster. Then you are required to have a booster every 5 years, but believe me you really don't want to risk catching Hep B.

Hi this is yazz, i will be going to Bolton college becasue that is the closest to me. the course is one day a week 9 - 5 and one day in placement in the college. At the moment i am studying BA hon in Early childhood studies. we have to placement in this course, so i asked hospital near me if they take me on which they have. so i can get experience and be sure that is the field i want to work with, i love it there, can be emotional seeing the children poorly but i manage to cope quite well in that situation. I would advice you to do one day free work at an hospital near you, so hopefully they will offer you an job there. Where i am doing placement they have asked me to do supply work for them which i will get paid! in the summer. I hope this has helped you if not e mail me, and i will try to help you.

Hey Shelley, my name katie and I'm doing the course right now at stanmore college as far as i know it is not a course requirement to have those injections( none of us were told to have them done) however if you have the time to get them done i would advice you to.
The course has no exams at all which is wonderful but the work load isn't small by any means. You get marked on course work, journal and observations but you get loads of feedback and support at stanmore college where i am, i've heard that the other colleges aren't as good! It's marked as a pass, merit or destinction.
You also have to do a 200hr placement with a registered play specialist if you are not working in a hosptial.
Any other questions feel free to ask kate

Hi
Normally colleges want candidates to have 2 to 3 years experience
working with children before applying to do the hospital play
specialist qualification. So i would finish your course in Playwork
and then get as much experience as you can with children of different
ages and with a variety of special needs before going on to do the
course.
Spending a day working a long side a qualified hospital play
specialist is a very good idea, especially as some colleges are now
asking students at interview to write a short essay explaining why
they want to be a hospital play specialist.
I would also recomend joining the National Association of Hospital
Play Staff (NAHPS). You can join as an Associate Member (£20 per
year) and recieve our professional Journals and Newsletters which
have lots of articles about real hospital play specialists doing the
job, and will give you a better idea about the profession.
www.nahps.org.uk
Please give me a shout if i can be of any help, i have been a
qualified hospital play specialist for 7 years.
Child care qualification should help alongside childcare experince to get onto the course the best one is Stanmore College. Would advice going to shadow a play specialist before you decide to get a feel for what its like. if you need anything feel free to ask as im happy to help. kate

I am just starting the Hospital Play Specialist Course at Leicester college. I have started my placement (Kettering Hospital) to get some experience. I am aware that we have to do a block placement sometime during the year and i was actually going to contact Brighton's children hospital. The reason i am looking for somewhere away from Peterborough is hopefully different ideas and experience. I am actually from Brighton area but have moved up to the midlands. Alot of the students are doing their placements in the midlands but i would like to do something different. I would be most grateful if you could advise me of who to contact.
The best place to look for vacancies is either on the NHS web site under job vacancies, or on the NAHPS website. If you are a member of NAHPS you will periodically be sent information of job vacancies. Most hospitals will have websites that you can look at which includes any vacancies they may have. I am the Play Service Manager at the childrens hospital in Brighton and our last vacancy appeared on our website and on the NHS website. Good Luck in your search. establish wether HPS's are essential.'
I am finding it difficlut to source information regarding this subject
and would be pleased to know if any one is able to help in anyway at
all.
I would appreciate any previous literature on play in hospice, the
value added by the HPS within the hospice, etc. Any assistance that you
could give me in this matter would be most appreciated. Thank you. Emma

How has everyone been finding rewriting their job descriptions for
agenda for change? Has anyone been told they will get a band 5? I
have been told i will probabley only get a band 4 as our
qualification is not a degree equivalent.
Does anyone think it would be a good idea if there was a follow on
qualification which you could choose to do for more experienced
hps's? Maybe if it was mostly distance learning it would be easier,
and you wouldn't need to take lots of time off work. What does any
one think?
Thank you for your advice Hatty,i found it really useful, I am now a member of the NAHPS, but i was wondering how do i join these branch groups you talked about;
"Also NAHPS have branch groups around the counrty, you might find it really helpful to join one near you as there aren't many of us hps's about and we need each others support. Hope you enjoy the course"
Could you tell me where i can find them or how to join them,
many thanks Tee x

Hi, it's always a good idea to join the National Association of Hospital Play Staff (NAHPS) as their magazines are so useful, as are their training courses. If you join in sept as a student member you get 18 mths membership.
