I thought the festival was excellent. I really enjoyed it all. I met
some very interesting and informative people and came away with lots
of valuable tips and experiences. Absolutely brilliant. I do hope that
Scott and Paul have the energy to organise another one next year.
Thanks very much for doing it, it must have been a tremendous amount
of work and worry. Well done. Lets have more.
Kind regards Mark Veevers.

The girls at Lancaster Tourist Information put so much work in behind

Yes I've just put in something to them. I encourage everone else to
also.

Scott, you know I don't hang around and post messages on forums (for
no-other reason than it's not my bag, but I do think it's a useful
thing) so I hope this means something:

I also don't know whether you realise just on what scale the
congratulations are due to you, Paul and everyone else who helped.
It reminded me of a mini 'St Chartier in a pub'. The atmosphere was
wonderful. I hope this really starts something. We really need this
in Britain.

Also just a word to say congrats to your sound man Alec. He got some
truly chunky sounds out of the gurdies this weekend and the mix was
superb. An unsung hero (no longer).

Love to all,

Simon Raine.

We're just adding our thanks to Scott, Paul and everyone else who made
the Festival happen. There was so much to do, so many people to meet
and it was fun the whole way through. Never dreamt we would come away
with an interest in dancing as well as playing those French dance tunes!

Hi Scott, Paul -

I hope you've both managed to come down off the ceiling after such a magnificent job, which ran extremely smoothly as far as I could tell.  And you still found time to play a set, Scott!

I dont know how many of us went out into town busking: Sam and I played to a small but appreciative crowd outside the Music Room after lunch on saturday (an appropriate location I thought), as they sat at their tables drinking tea and eating cakes in the sun.  Have just given the Tourist Agency an email to thank them for their work and let them know that there was indeed a HG presence in the town!

regards to all,

Mike

A wonderful weekend. Tiring but stimulating. Brought me out of 20 years of hibernation and I hope to stay awake now! Teaching was very rewarding in the two classes I took. Lovely to see old friends and make new ones. And I actually danced for the first time!

The very first UK HG Festival was promoted by the Hurdy-gurdy Society on 1st August 1992 at St Martin’s in the Fields,  London.  Patrick Bouffard Master Class.  In the church, Doreen Muskett & others.  Courtyard: Neil Brook and instruments. Concert in the Market Square: Cliff Stapleton, Nigel Eaton, Tim Bailey, Patrick Bouffard.

We have waited a long time for the seed to grow, but our dream has been realised.  Well done, everyone! And especially Scott for the inspiration.

Thanks to all for your generous contributions to the Parkinson’s Disease Society.  Just over £100.00 will go for research into this dreadful affliction.

I am a new member having joined as I am seriously thinking about
getting a Hurdy Gurdy.

However, I have never had a shot of one and it has been over 40 years
since I have seen one played apart from when looking up utube etc.

As I live in South Glasgow and in Scotland can anyone tell if there are
Hurdy Gurdy makers actually working here or in the North of England.
I would prefer to try playing the instrument before taking the plunge
and buying one which might lie idle if I am not right for the
instrument.

I would like to play Scottish and Irish music especially.

I spoke to lots of people over the weekend about the forthcoming Blowout
(annual gathering of the Bagpipe Society). It is not so much a
festival...more a big party with workshops, concerts and sessions
galore. This year's event will take place in the beautiful setting of
Polesworth Priory, in Staffordshire. As well as all the usual
bagpipe-related workshops, etc. there will be hurdy gurdy workshops
running all weekend led by Steve Tyler. The workshops will be
intermediate and advanced levels and will be progressive throughout the
weekend. The event takes place over the weekend 8-10 June, and weekend
tickets (which cover everything except the food, which can also be
ordered if desired) cost £35 if bought before 6 May.

Full details of the Blowout and a ticket booking form are now on the
Bagpipe Society website at http://bagpipesociety.org.uk/

Hope to see lots of gurdy players there :-)

Cheers

but you could try Kingham Made To Measure Cases...

Hi Roy, I'm in Glasgow - Cowcaddens, kind of north-central. I don't make em, but I've been playing for a couple of years, and I ain't too good yet. I've also hear rumours of another player at Glasgow Uni. They have yet to coalesce into a person yet, though.

Are there any other near-glasgow players out there???

I must congratulate myself that after 4 days of catching up with my ordinary
things I finally
got here to say something:-)...

To say how much this festival has meant to me, how much I enjoyed your music,
your
enthusiasm, your friendship - everything (even the pub food felt gorgeous, not
to mention
Gwenda's fab breakfasts). The only negative thing about the festival was that it
ended, oh,
too soon, and now we are separated again - musicians who found joy in playing
together -
some hundred or thousands of miles from each other. (I hope Philippa is working
hard
now to organize her year in Loughborough:-)

Fortunately there are a good number of people who are near to me and since we
have
already been talking about a regular meeting in the Midlands somewhere along the
M1, I
would be happy to take the lead and organize it. I know suitable places in and
around
Derby, so people from Sheffield and Leicester, Nottingham and Birmingham areas
could
join in.

We could meet once in a month on a weekend, Saturday or Sunday afternoon and
every
second month we could invite somebody to teach a workshop, for which we would
add the
money together. Taking turns in different styles and different issues.
I would like to start right in May, the third weekends seem to be fairly quiet
and suitable
throughout the summer (I am not here in August though.) I'd prefer Sunday
afternoons,
but any other ideas are welcome. It is very possible that I could hire a place
for less than
£15 for the whole afternoon, any time after 2pm. We could add then together the
hire
costs.

Please, please, contact me off list, which is easier to manage if you are
interested. And do
it fairly soon, I think with three people it is already a reasonable adventure.
Please use this address if possible:

Scott, are you serious about coming to Staffordshire? In this case I should go

Hi Cecilia, and anyone else thinking about coming along to the Blowout.
It really is a lovely event. We've been going along for years and
absolutely adore it.

It would help the organisers a great deal if you could book your tickets
as soon as possible - at the moment the ticket bookings are rather low
and they will have to consider in the next week or so whether it is
viable to run...

I forgot to mention (although I think it's on the Bagpipe Soc website)
that there is free camping for all ticket holders. Tents will be in the
vicarage garden and there is a hard-standing area for campervans.

Cheers
Ruthie
PS Lovely to meet you Cecilia. I loved your songs in the Sunday
afternoon concert!

Thanks for that Robin,

If I go ahead and take the plunge I would prefer to support someone
as local as possible so if Mel is looking in I would love to know if
she sells the instruments she makes and if I could visit and try one
out.

Theres seems to be so many different types and for someone like me
who doesn't know anything its a bit bewildering. :-)

I have mixed views on the longer festival. The idea of complete focus
and dedication is great, and would do everyone good - novice or seasoned
performer alike. Nevertheless, it seems to me that those of us with
work commitments and limited vacation time might not be able to attend,
so the audience attracted will be somewhat different to that for a
weekend. On the other hand, I'm sure that Cliff's notion of bonding
between tutor and pupil is important, though if you fall out on the
first day, things could be a bit rough!

Just read Simon Raines post, but I'm too e-inept to reply on the same
thread. Anyway 'Hear,Hear'. It was a brilliant weekend and it never
occured to me until I read Simons post just how good the sound quality
was.It really was just right. The Gregson was a cracking venue and the
mix of concert, session and dancing was inspired. It meant there was
something to suit your mood at any time in the evening. More (or more
spread out) workshops and makers exhibits would be good during the day,
but thats a wish list for the future, not a criticism.
It was strange how familiar people seemed even though I only knew names
or faces from the forum or myspace.
Well done and thanks to Scott,Paul et al for putting it together. I'm
starting to do my bit for the Bideford Folk Festival 13/8-19/8 and it
just reminded me how much goes into an event like this. Hope you are
all still buzzzing.
