Carole,

Look at http://www.hurdygurdy.org

Chris Allen and Sabina Kormylo
Also in South Wales (Merthr Vale)

I believe they may have one symphony unsold from the current production
batch

Hi,

As a symphonie player myself, the main consideration when playing with other instruments is going to be the volume of the machine itself. The symphonie is not the loudest version of the hurdy-gurdy because of its body shape, but each manufacturer makes them differently, and they vary greatly. I am not going to recommend the one that I play, not because it isn't any good, but because I do not have experience of the others. All of the UK makers are very approachable, and it may be a good idea to hear each one played along with your other instrument.

Of course, the ideal place to do this is a gathering where lots of symphonies and other gurdies are coming together. Lancaster at the weekend sounds like a good bet to me!

Regards,
Geoff Turner

Robin,

I don't know of any events in July, but I am nearly always to be found on a Monday evening in the Shroppie Fly in Audlem, just over the border into Cheshire with my gurdy at their folk sessions, at which you would be very welcome.

I wonder whether it was Peter Bull from Leeds. He plays the lute and
Hammer dulcimer. He also sings and is at ease with audiences. However I
would not describe him as having Italian complexion - if anything I
would say Peter Bull is pale.

This is that I got:
The weekend will start on the 16th with an nice meeting

We (I mean not really myself but you people out there) could/should
organise one. This is an idea we were already thinking about to raise
funds for the next festival. An informal weekend somewhere together.

If you come to the fest and to the AGM, you will hear more about that.

Consider yourself lucky, Robin

The nearest gurdy player from my perspective is several thousand miles away, at least 6 hours away, BY PLANE.

Dear All!

We are leaving tomorrow late morning/early afternoon for Lancaster. If you have any urgent last minute issues, either write now or you can call us on 07981 577738 (Cecilia) and 07985 279074 (Paul).

AGM!!!!
We had to modify the time of the AGM, it will be on the painfully early Sunday morning at 10:30 at the Gregson. Nevertheless we do encourage you to brave it and join us. Just think about it:  you can't really play properly cheerful French tunes if you didn't have a good voting drill in the morning. Healthy and useful.

Also please read the documents in advance if possible, they can be downloaded from the festival folder (Menu on the left: files_ gurdyfest2008_agm material). Or ask us for a printed copy on Friday and read it as bedtime story in Lancaster. We will have 30 minutes to do all this, no time to read you everything in detail.

More about Sunday: If you are a Baroque player or want to join the GOL and can read music (or can't, but you keep one at home anyway for pretense), please bring a music stand!

Other request: there will be a number of people sleeping on floor space at private houses. We try to bring extra mats and sleeping bags, if you have space in your car and stock some of these, it would be helpful if you brought a few extra for emergencies.

Also, don't forget to bring your hurdy-gurdy, a cheerful smile and and an adventurous nature!
We look forward to seeing you all at Lancaster this weekend!

Paul & Cecilia

This is from the other half of  'Paul & Cecilia',

Just one more 'parish notice' - we have changed the timing of the
evening concert on Saturday so we will now start at 8.30, instead of 9.00pm
We'll start with the Balkanics - a local band playing a mostly Balkan music,
and Steve Tyler will come on shortly after 9.00, to allow more time for the
'Bal Folk' with Red Dog Green Dog to finish off the evening.

There are still tickets left but (especially for Saturday night and for
workshops) please do email or phone ahead to avoid disappointment.

I hope to see as of you many as possible at the weekend.

Yes, it is that Audlem. Session starts at 8:00 pm.

It is a canalside pub, and frequently has children a lot younger than 11, so I am sure he would be most welcome.

There are nearly always 2 or 3 gurdy players there, myself and one or two others.

Let me know nearer the time, so I can make sure I am definitely there that week.

Anyone else passing this way would also be very welcome.

Cecilia,

Unfortunately that means that I will not be at the AGM.

I changed my plans to come up Friday evening to pick up Balazs and Kati so I will be leaving for home after the Saturday night concert.

However, that does not mean I am not willing to help with organising next year.

Anyone else feel like volunteering, it is not going to happen without help.

I have one which I keep to remind myself of the design. It's not for

some innovations which make it louder.May be good to bring husband and
concertina along.

sale but I will bring it to Lancaster and you can try it out for
volume. The symphonie is naturally quite restrained but I have made
some innovations which make it louder.May be good to bring husband and
concertina along.
Cheers

We have hit a problem with our website (gurdy.co.uk) so we have
created an interim page with basic festival info at
www.hurdy-gurdy.org . We will discuss ideas for new website content
after the festival. Sorry for any confusion caused. Normal service
will be resumed shortly,.,

Caveat emptor when dealing with EMS, their prices are just silly -
they have offered my gurdies second hand in the past for more than I
charge new! Also be sure to hear it played to your satisfaction
before deciding, It's usually not the makers fault if it sounds
terrible, it's just that the EMS is not equipped to set up and
maintain gurdies .

Carole,

That is the one I have. It is quite a nice one, and relatively loud in the Symphonie stakes. I only base this on knowledge of this symphonie though, so there may be better out there, and I don't think it is the cheapest. However, if they have one in stock, it will probably be the quickest to get hold of.

It is a shame you can't make it up to Lancaster, as I will have it with me.

Thanks for all your advice - unforuntately we have commitments this weekend otherwise we would have made the journey up to Lancaster.  I've got my eye on the chromatic Morillo from Early Music Shop - does anyone have one of these?

Hi Carole,

I've got the EMS Morillo, (Bought February this year) which I'm taking to Lancaster. I'm hoping to have it looked over / set up while there.

It seems, I don't know, more 'basic' than pictures I've seen from the British makers. I don't know whether this is to make it more 'authentic' as an early instrument. (e.g. the tangents are wood to wood, which means they can move by themselves, with no screws in evidence apart from 1 holding the wheel on, the tuning pegs are like a violin rather than a guitar). I didn't compare different instruments before I bought - given that Lancaster was coming up perhaps this wasn't a good idea. I can let you know how I think mine compares with others I see there, and let you know when I get back?

Hi

Wasn't at all sure I'd be able to visit Lancaster this weekend (still
not 100%) so wondering if payment on door of Sat/Sun gigs is possible?

thanks

Yes it is, space permitting of course (there are still tickets left).
Sunday's concert is free (not ticketed).
