dear all,

i just joined your gurdy forum and want to quickly introduce myself. i
started playing the hurdy gurdy 10 years ago. i have been through a
few models and have settled with a gotchy renaissance for the moment.
i am quite an amateur for my main instruments have been recorders and
french shepherds pipes. i live in aberdeen with my young and still
small family. originally i am from leipzig, germany. i´m really
looking forward to find my way round this forum (i am hopeless with
everything computer related, so i will be slow to start with) and to
really get some insights into the british gurdy-culture.

thank you for now,

elisabeth

Good morning everyone

I am close enough to the organisers to be able to promote new events at the festival

Would there be any mileage in arranging a week long workshop in the mornings of the festival and some sessions through the days.

We do believe very much at Whitby that everyone should be willing to do two things
join in and be available to teach whatever your expertise is to the evolving tradition

we also have a motto " we never say no and we never say sorry"

Mike

Hi Mike,
Plenty of events and festivals over here in Scotland, but not many, if
any, are HG orientated. I usually just invade the folk sessions and
festivals lolll

Just to let everyone on the list know that individual tracks from the Drohne album Le Son du Bois are now available from iTunes, and other download sites. Previously the album was only available to download in it's complete form. This could be of particular interest to those list members who have expressed an interest in just the instrumental dance tracks.
Find links at www.drohne.co.uk .
One bit of bad news though. I seem to be the only gurdy player available on iTunes. Is this correct? or is it just my ineptitude in finding my way around the iTunes site.

Hi Philip,
Good to make contact. I am a very slow learner with Marcel Karlen (learning the HG has only the vaguest relationship to banjo or mandolin!) whom I am sure you have come in contact with . We have a lesson, a long chat and a couple of Alsace beers ever few weeks. He renovated my gurdy which was in a sorry state but is now looking and sounding fantastic. I love the full tone. A Pimpard mmmm. A couple of years ago my son and I went to Jenzat for the Festivielle and we had a fantastic weekend - pity we have not seen it advertised again since then. Where are you based?
Best wishes

Hi, I use Savarez 0.71 mm for high chanter, and Corelli Crystal D Medium violin for the low one. For my Clare Dugue gurdy they are excellent. I get them from Bridgewood and Neitzert who are very helpful and quick. JON

What strings do people use on their D gurdy?

My Low D has started to split (it's Gut) and just wondered what people
had found the best strings to be before replacing them.

I have a Gotschy Phoenix gurdy if that helps.

directed him here so he may be joining and asking for advice) and we
felt they were worty of sharing!

hope you find them interesting like we did!!

Hi All,

Just in case anyone's placed an order with Ashworth's for a pickup, I
thought I'd better let people know that appear to have stopped trading.
It seems as though Alun Jones has sadly died and his wife's having some
trouble sorting out orders and dealing with what's left of the business
(including having to deal wtih those helpful people at PayPal). I
managed to get my pickup (it's excellent by the way), but I had to
contact Linda Ashwoth-Jones personally in order to ort out my order
(she was extremely helpful, given the circumstances). I'm aware that a
number of gurdy players have used Ashworths in the past, and that their
website still appears to be taking orders. However it may be best to
look for one elsewhere, or otherwise contact Linda direct.

If you leave her a message she promises to get back to you as soon as
possible.

John

Hello folks,

I know this is a change in the thread and subject, but I am seaking a spot of advice. I would like to try to get an extra low D drone string fitted on my gurdy. Neil Brook has suggested that I try a Cello 'c' string. But having bought one it turns out that it is no thicker than my current D drone, so presumably will sound D in the same register. I used to have a gurdy that had a particularly low note D drone on it and it gave the instrument a fabulous resonant low growl. Can anyone advise as to what to get please?

Regards Mark.

Is anyone interested?

I've been aware of these for a while but, I think if you played one of these in the street, you WOULD be asked where the monkey was.
I must admit, I got a similar sound over 35 years ago playing a cello-style guitar (with the curved front and "f" holes) with a violin bow (you can easily cover two strings).
It was just a thought as I already had a simple (no horn) one string fiddle.
As you have probably gathered, I didn't pursue it :)
HEY! Maybe he heard me!!!!!

string fitted on my gurdy. Neil Brook has suggested that I try a Cello
'c' string. But having bought one it turns out that it is no thicker
than my current D drone, so presumably will sound D in the same
register. I used to have a gurdy that had a particularly low note D
drone on it and it gave the instrument a fabulous resonant low growl.
Can anyone advise as to what to get please?

Hi Everyone
While we are on the subject of drones (see what I did there?)loll
could anyone tell me all the major and minor keys that go with a "D"
Drone? I'm sure there is a way to work it out besides trying them all
but my musical theory is not up to it.
regards
Robin

I've been using Aricore Cello C for the low D drone and it was as
good as I could get. It is more of a sub-woofer than a real note .
If you are feeling rich, you can try Pirastro Obligato cello C they
are much louder and work a treat . Another solution would be to
increase the sounding length by adding a small bridge ( taller than
the original) further from the wheel. this can be temporary, resting
on blutak or similar. The result is a tighter more responsive string
for the same pitch and the longer bowing distance will enhance the
bass frequencies. Of course it may not work at all !!!!

Cheers

They are quite expensive but last about a year and yes they are
thinner than the gut equivalent. The main problem with them is
getting the cotton to adhere to start with, Neils sticky stuff is
the answer for me.   JON

Ah, good to see they're still touring - after seeing them July 2007, this band is what got me into Hurdy Gurdy to start with!

This is only just on topic but a gurdy is involved so I think it belongs on the list.
Last night I went to one of the best gigs I have ever been to. The Ian McMillan Orchestra with Clare Salamen on a Colson hurdy-gurdy. Great music, great humour and a great vibe.
Check-out their myspace. Their tour continues into next month.

A friend is selling a hurdy gurdy - Eaton double keyboard with lots of
decoration. Current price is £4200 for a new one with minimal
decoration (three year waiting list).
Is anyone interested?
- Steve.
