Years ago, Angela Beaumont had the bright idea of printing " It's a
hurdy-gurdy " above the picture which saves a lot of people asking
that question ! Just a thought.

you could always use print-on-demand webshops like Café Press or something to have a nice variety of design T-shirts available without the hassle and initial cost of doing it yourselves. Not only t-shirts, then, why not coffee mugs and other knickknacks?

Oh, NICE.
I make a lot of tee shirts for the summer holidays for myself and family (pretty easy with a sheet of transfer paper, a printer and a hot iron as most transfer papers use ordinary ink) - usually from photos I have taken myself and very cheap shirts from Asda or the like. At least I know nobody else will have the same shirt :)
It's got me thinking now "I'm with the hurdy gurdy player" for my wife maybe?

Noise of Minstrels, with whom I played for many years, also had (I still have one), badges made cheaply which said "it's a hurdy gurdy".
It worked when playing in the street and helped ward off the inevitable question and the assumption that a curious bystander could stand in front of you while we were giving a street performance,
cut us off from our audience and expect an intelligent conversation about the instrument and the music, its history where they can get one obviously totally unaware of their interference in a the event.
But street performance is a wonderful training ground for almost every aspect of performance -   building a huge repertoire, playing and keeping together and in tune amidst the bustle and noise of the street,
talking and playing at the same time, building confidence in public, sense of humour, presentation ............things which make the concert stage performance seem relatively easy and surprisingly even the
need to be much more focussed and aware of refinement of the music are also helped.

IIRC, The Bagpipe Society used to have a great instrument box sticker:  "Play it?  I can hardly carry it!" - I've always wanted one of those - perhaps we can reinvent it for the hurdy-gurdy.

On the subject of stickers.
Some years ago the promo copies of my Radio Noir album carried a parody version of the "Parental Guidance" sticker that appears on things such as rap albums. Mine said.."Parental guidence, explicit drones". This proved so popular that several gurdy and pipe players wanted an enlarged case sticker version. Alas it was only a paper sticker and wore-out very quickly.
And T shirts... well ask Scott to show his, which is a classic one-off version of the Angela Beaumont design classic but with the addition of the pretentious "C'est une Vielle", and a chavy gold handle. However, don't blame Scott it, was originaly mine but I grew out of it as a result of eating too much French food.

This guy does gurdy T-shirts, with a design taken from the 13th
century illustration of two gurdy - sorry symphonie - players having
a chat whilst playing (it's on p.79 of the H-G Method if you want to
have a look at the pic). I wore mine at the Youlgreve gathering in
September. The only downside is that they're based in South Carolina:
However they're V nice people to do business with, and even with the
economy in freefall the cost (including shipping) isn't that
extortionate.

Made my own Tshirt tonight (with a little advice from Colin) Bought
some tshirt transfer paper from Smiths and use my own artwork for the
design. It works really well. I have posted the design in photos,
gurdy art, so if anyone fancies using the design email me direct and i
will send you the jpeg
Regards Robin
Yes the design is back to front

The gurdy T-shirt I love the most is the one Ben Grossman did....it's black, and
all it has across the front are the key holes in white. You can see the design
on his Macrophone site (http://www.macrophone.org/main.html)

Out of hospital and back on a proper keyboard.
I play a Chris Allen Colson HG (tuned DG) and love it. I've been doing
dance and song stuff in primary schools for a while and played in a
couple of bands. I suppose I would like to find two things in this
forum to start with. One would be a chance to exchange ideas with
anyone writing music/songs/dances with a gurdy. (I'm playing with two
other people finding out about how far you can take drone based music
with dijeridoo, percussion, bass, HG, voice etc and inventing as we
go). The other is more a technical thing. Every now and again I get
very poor top end when I need to put in a new D chanterelle and have
to start again, anyone got any good ideas to be more consistent?

Looking forward to hearing from the forum, Ian.

Hello,

I'm Alex. I don't play a hurdy gurdy yet but love their sound - I go to
a lot of world music events and always find them entrancing. For the
last few years I've been tuning my guitar strangely to try and get a
kind of hurdy sound, and as a next step a friend and I are thinking of
making the $20 one shown on the internet; then after that maybe I'll be
able to buy a proper one...

I spend summers in England and winters in Goa - where I am now.

I joined just to find out as much as I can about them.

Welcome Alex,

I am sure that it won't happen as you already love them, but if you fail on building the $20 one or fail to get a good sound out of it, don't let it put you off.

last few years I've been tuning my guitar strangely to try and get a
kind of hurdy sound, and as a next step a friend and I are thinking of
making the $20 one shown on the internet; then after that maybe I'll be
able to buy a proper one...

I spend summers in England and winters in Goa - where I am now.

I joined just to find out as much as I can about them.

Alex

HI Alex
A few years back i came across the $20 HG and thought about making it.
I did start but then decided it was only a little bit more work to
make something resembling the real thing. I used second hand wood to
keep the expense down. I did make initial mistakes and it has been
modified over the years but it is a great way to learn how every thing
works. I think it was Neil Brook who said in an email that making a HG
was an organic thing. Anyway the one I ended up with is in the photos
section of the forum under Robin's homeproject although it has a
different tail piece now. I am sure if you decided to go for it you
would find plenty of advice on the forum.
Regards
Robin
p.s mine was built without any fancy tools but access to a lathe (for
the wheel)is a must.

Hi Graham,

So here's the link to the $20 - make yourself - hurdy gurdy. Any
advice on its likely limitations would be most welcome.

This looks amazingly like a cousin of my mountain dulcimer (made from a strip of pine hollowed out and covered with plywood with frets fitted and then a trapezoid body from offcuts of plywood (and lots of wood filler) and a few spare guitar keys fastened on (yes, it plays and, in fact, a lot better than the one I bought from the Early Music shop). Nothing measured other than the fret spacings either and painted bright green with varnished top.
That actually cost me nothing to make as the bits were all lying around and I only used a pad saw, tenon saw, hammer and a steel rule and pencil.
It may not look to good but it plays fine.
Have to dig out my lathe (drill-powered) and have a go at this. Sounds fun.
OK, it's not a real one but, what the heck, it's a HGLO.
Anyone get the sound sample to work? I can't.

The gurdy T-shirt I love the most is the one Ben Grossman did....it's black, and all it has across the front are the key holes in white. You can see the design on his Macrophone site (http://www.macropho ne.org/main. html)

Judith

(This guy does gurdy T-shirts, with a design taken from the 13th
century illustration of two gurdy - sorry symphonie - players having
a chat whilst playing (it's on p.79 of the H-G Method if you want to
have a look at the pic). I wore mine at the Youlgreve gathering in
September. The only downside is that they're based in South Carolina:
However they're V nice people to do business with, and even with the
economy in freefall the cost (including shipping) isn't that
extortionate.

I've recently discovered I can temporarily convert my C-G Soirat gurdy to play in A by slackening the C bourdon and C trompette string down to A.  The strings I'm using (NRI high twist 38 thou, Savarez BF1232 respectively) don't seem to mind this too much - in fact I think the rasp of the trompette is if anything groovier, especially for slow pieces.
I play mostly on my own, so the key change was not to match other players.  The main advantage is now having the 7th note of the scale available at the left-hand end of the keyboard.  You can also play dark minor tunes without having to use so many accidentals.
I'm wondering whether other list members do this sort of thing, or whether most gurdy strings actually don't like being tuned away from the pitch they're intended for.

Matthew,

I also play in A minor regularly on my G/C instruments

What I do is tune the Gros Bourdon UP from G to A
Tune the Trompette UP from D to E to get a fifth
Additionally you can tune the Mouche UP from G to A

I leave the Petit Bourdon at C and surprisingly you will find it sounds good to use this as well as the low A
Why a minor third drone sounds good I really don't know

With this tuning you can play with all 6 strings on together

I you really don't like tuning up then drop the chanters 2 semitones from G to F
You will then be playing in G minor with A minor fingering, not a problem if you are playing alone

Which ever way, its a sod to tune accurately by ear
The end result is however pretty stunning

Try tuning the Mouche to B. I've been using the mouche tuned to A for
some time, it gives a slightly arabic tone but I have found recently B
works very well for Morris tunes. I am getting into Playford tunes at
the moment and still haven't worked out the ideal drones, does anyone
have any ideas?
