Hi Everyone Out There - Ive noticed that things have been a bit quiet
over the festive season, so as it's freeeezing outside, I thought I'd
stay in and wish everyone on the forum compliments of the season and
all the best for 2009!

I've also finally managed to get to grips with the DVD (having bought
it at the Youlgreave weekend), and need to send a big note of thanks to
Mr Brook for producing it! I've found it a HUGE help in getting to
grips with my gurdy, especially on things like set-up (a little more
involved than on my Strat!)and finally worked out how to put the cotton
on properly! So thanks. I'd urge anyone who's looking at doing some of
their own basic maintenence to get a copy from Neil and have a go -
It'll boost your confidence in handling the instruments into the
bargain.

All the best.

John

do you think so? i didn't think it was too terrible... but i guess a
nasty-looking deamon-head, some strings out of tune and way too much rasin on
the wheel could pump some fear into your enemies.

i was busking in germany once in a small town's pedestrian zone. a woman came
straight out to me and ranted at what terrible cat-howling noises these were and
what i was thinking to "do that stuff" right under her sitting room window. bad
luck - she preferred the accordionists that are en masse in german towns.
anyway. perhaps we are not always appreciated. merry christmas once more,
elisabeth

I don't have addresses for all the people on here who helped me get
going in gurdies over the last year and a bit but here are the ones I
need to say thanks and merry christmas to (embarrassing isn't it?):
First to Jamie (everyone knows your real name) for letting me try your
beautiful gurdy at kentwell after so many y/tears of people refusing
me...and me getting smitten almost immediately.
Sam for getting me 'on time' and spending three hours with that
Boireaud (which now sounds very nice but took months more 'fiddling')
Neil who made pegs for my emergency (mmm Sam had a bit to do with that)
with my lovely Gotschy and dogs for the boireaud and for letting me try
the wonderstring (at which I failed miserably). I reckon you don't
sleep Neil.
Scott and Paul for puting me onto Aquila strings. The .66 NLG is a
brill first chanter in D made all the difference. You should all try it.
Mike for sorting tangents and giving me a gentle lesson in trompette.
And for Steve who scared the willies out of me by giving me a somewhat
less gentle trompette lesson...scarey.Lovely gig at the Puppet Theatre
though.
Merry Christmas you lot and everyone else and here's to more in 2009.

hello and welcome peter,

it's funny you mention the christmas carol; when i watched "the polar express" a
few years ago i remember the "train ghost" playing a luteback hurdy gurdy. isn't

A very merry christmas to everyone. today felt more like spring (at least in

Even the restored one is going to need work to make it playable.  The price seems rather high to me considering the cost of fixing is likely to be hefty.  But it could be the exchange rate talking.

I bought one of those from the US a while ago - the exchange rate was
good and even after shipping and import tax I didn't pay as much as is
being asked for this one! They are very beautiful pieces. I'm looking
forward to having mine on display when my children are older.

Well, i will try to introduce myself.
As i am german this might be kind of funny, because of my clumsy english.
Some members of this group might allready know me via myspace as
"vielle bleu"
My name is Stefan Hemmers and i am part of the balfolk-band "les
hommes ventrus", that is located in the lower rhine-aerea (which has
been french a bit longer than other parts of germany, the rhine being
the border).
Our music is influenced by french and belgian model, but we try to be
original. There is nearly no traditional music left in our region, so
we have to grow new music on old roots.
I am playing a hurdygurdy made by Walter Simons, who luckily is my
direct neighbor and friend.( Walter is a real good hurdygurdymaker and
i think his new instruments match the famous austrian Weichselbaumer,
though Walter would never say so in public. He is sooooo modest,
...well at least sometimes )

My hurdygurdy is 6 years old by now and the most simple kind he made.
It features 2 melodie strings G/D, 2 drones C(low)/G and
2 trumpettes C/G.

Walter and me changed a lot of things on my gurdy over the years.
We pimped the gurdy with 3 sympathetic strings, that run over the
bridge and a capo on the c-trumpette to d. The c drone changed to low
c(it works well, even on this small body), strings of different gauge,
different dogs and i fitted a piezo-pickup to it.By now my hurdygurdy
is probably one of the technical best kept and most often played
hurdygurdys made by him. Lucky me.
(I should take care of the look a bit more.It is never clean and you
can see it is heavily used )
If you like to hear the sound and some of my tunes, please visit
myspace, vielle bleu.
I have posted my "not yet ready for the band" tunes there. I have
recorded most of it just by plugging the hurdygurdy to the soundcard
of my computer and edited the recording a little with the
audacity-software. Some older recordings are made with a fostex
multitracker and a pair of cheap microphones.
So don´t expect too much.

If there are mistakes in this message: you can keep them for free and
use them in any way you like.

All the best,
Stefan

Well, there are few who really can play the blues ;)

My gurdy has been all blue when it was build.
I painted it for the maker, without knowing that it would be mine
sometime later. I am designer and airbrushartist and not familiar with
painting instruments, so the laquer was not strong enough.
The hurygurdy was built for students and it has been kind of experimental.
After 3 years of regular use, there was a part of pure wood visible on
the lid ( my fault) and i decided to strip it.It is oiled now.
According to my slowly growing skills, i stripped the part with the
tuning machineheads a few month after my first workshop with Cliff
Stapleton, got a wooden wheelcover after the second workshop a year
later and maybe will strip the tailpiece when i am able to do trills.

The body however, will remain blue.

Best wishes,
Stefan

Well, the french influence in the west of germany may be a result of
the times ,when parts of germany were french.
There are a lot of french words mixed into the language in the whole
rhine-area and it has been "chique" to say "trottoir, parapluie" and
the like. The french aristocracy has been role model for the german.
French has been "en vogue". So it fits, if you play old style music.
In addition, one may not neglect that France is not that far away.(and
you don´t have to swim ;)
Our friends from the north and east of germany ,"fievklang" for
example, may be influenced more by swedish music.
So i think it´s a matter of neighborhood and exchange.

Even the restored one is going to need work to make it playable.  The price seems rather high to me considering the cost of fixing is likely to be hefty.  But it could be the exchange rate talking.

All the best,
Stefan

My main bit of advice is to make sure you like the sound. If the seller
can't make it sound ok, run like hell ! --- In

hi stefan,

welcome! i am from germany too, but i live up in scotland for the time being. i
was more into renaissance music when i took up the gurdy in germany, but now i
have hardly time to play. :-( i find it amazing how much french influence there
seems to be wherever a gurdy player is around. i was not aware of it at all
before i joined the forum. seems to be the same in germany though. funny. hope
you find what you are looking for here. i will have a look at your website.

cheers, elisabeth

Hello Andy
Welcome to our wacky world.
It's great to have someone from Gillingham wanting to take up the gurdy. I am in Kent just the other side of Canterbury, in fact I played a gig in Gillingham in September.
Like others on this list I would recommend buying new from a maker. Your local maker in Kent is Claire Dugue in Ramsgate. The last I heard she was working on a batch of student gurdies for completion in January, maybe they are not all sold.
There are secondhand instruments available but you have to be very careful. Neil Brook had what looked like a nice, and reasonably-priced, secondhand one a few months ago. Neil is a good bet as he is a player and a maker so he wouldn't sell you a turkey. Talking of turkeys, avoid shops selling hurdy gurdies, especially if their name begins with H or E. Also be careful with the internet, especialy ebay. Just acros the water from Kent in France and Belgium there is a thriving gurdy scene with a lot of players who could be upgrading but that's another story.
Third weekend in January I will be playing gurdy at the Eurobash in Hollingbourne and there are generally other gurdy players there, come along to find out more. Also feel free to contact me off list or even give me a phone, the number is on my website www.drohne.co.uk .
The number of gurdy players in Kent and East Sussex is on the increase so if you were to join the club you would have a lot of local support.

Probably the best piece of advice that can be given to a newcomer is "Buy one from a maker, they know how to set them up correctly, and you have more guarantee that they will be a decent instrument."
