Just about 0C in Liverpool, UK but at least the snow has cleared (one flake and everything stops - schools close, buses are cancelled as are the trains) and it's not funny driving a 3-wheeler in snow as the one front wheel is in the big pile of snow in the middle of the road that the 4-wheelers make!

Hi All

I have a HG for sale.

It's a Lute back model, Tim Guster made (http://timguster.com.au/)
instrument that I purchase last year. I believe it was made by Tim
about 2 years ago in Australian Blackwood.

I've damaged my left hand and can't justify having the instrument
just sitting here.

I can send any number of digital images to anyone that is
interested. I paid $3,400 Australian dollars for it last year. It's
in perfect working order, absolutely beautiful, sounds great and has
its own custom made case. My direct work email is
lee.hopson@...

The instrument is located with me here in Canberra, Australia

Happy to discuss with anyone who is interested.

Cheers Lee

Well its the weather of course. I mean we're all here but our mails aren't getting through the snow, unless they are superheated and have a bit of a run like those from Au and Nz.
We in the UK know that there is a shortage of salt to clear the lines. In the old days of course you could send a child up there to clear them but thats not allowed anymore.
It was thought that the snow was sent by cynical Russians to sell us more gas, but it turns out that a faulty valve in an illegal Welsh snow factory is resposible. The kids that did it have been caught - they always are, and have been duly sentenced to a fortnight in the Bahamas - had they been over 10yrs old they would have had an adventure holiday too, so lets hope this serves as  a warning.
There has been a great deal of interest in the progress of the Welsh Ferret training program - a unique initiative designed to rescue snow bound Haggis. I'll keep you posted though kindly as it sounds,I predict this is a recipe for trouble.
I'll be in touch again soon ok
Chris

there is nothing wrong with that. How did it play, what was the tone

I think for the money, approx 400 euros, it was good, but would need
some tinkering to get a nicer sound. I think it was fitted with nylon
guitar strings, had alot of rosin on and tangents needed tuning. A bit
of time setting up, some gut strings and it could be nice, the buzz
worked okay. There are a couple more makers in Budapest: Bela Szerenyi
and Balazs Nagy. Cecilia Patko has a Szerenyi Tekero with beautiful
tone and I have a Nagy Bass gurdy which I really like: good strong
tone! We tried another Szerenyi Tekero in a Folk Music shop in
Budapest which sounded very good, well made with sensitive trompette,
it was more than twice the price of the Vrabaly.
hope that helps a bit :-)
Best Wishes Scott

Hi All,

I think we're all trying to keep as warm as we can in Blighty without
having to pay those rip-off energy merchants too much! British Gas
actually had the cheek to ring me up in this weather to try and offer
me a "better package that will save me money" (how considerate of
them!).

OK rant over - It's still about 0' here on the outskirts of
Leicester - I've just removed about a foot of snow from my drive, but
unfortunately my band rehearsal's been cancelled so it was a bit of a
waste of time really.... Am now looking forward to a very icy evening
(though we've got the mulled wine ready for later!).

Sorry but I will miss the festival again this year (I'm not doing
very well): Shame as I really enjoyed the Youlgreave weekend last
year and was looking forward to going back. However the fest's being
held on the same weekend as my wife's birthday and were going on
holiday - Whilst she personally has nothing against gurdies, she
would prefer to spend her birthday on a beach somewhere. However if
we're going to run another autumn gathering again.....

John

Yes it is as I was really looking forward to it - Hopefully next
year.....

Sounds nasty up there! The singer in my band comes from Derby and she
had to cry off tonight's rehearsal due to the weather (and also
because the roads are expected to ice up tonight - Not nice
travelling back!).

Anyway, one way I've found of keeping the hands warm is with some
gurdy practice!

It is more like the “My weather is better than your weather” forum.  It is vitally important as we all know that HG like objects are very sensitive to weather, as are their players.  I am keeping my HG Airconditioned as it came from the UK and I don’t want it to die of heat exhaustion like so many British émigrés do on their first summer in Australia.

There must be something wrong with Yahoo, I thought I was logging on
to the UK Hurdy-gurdy Forum, but ended up here, on the "UK Let's Talk
About Weather - It's The Favourite British Pastime" forum.

Well, at least I can say "hello" to you, you seem to be just as crazy
a bunch of people as us, hurdy-gurdy players. By the way, we are
organising a hurdy-gurdy festival in May, hoping it won't snow then:)
If you are interested, you are most welcome to come along.

Bye for now, Cecilia

How do people store their Gurdy on a day to day basis, and does the
direction it lies affect anything?

I have been storing mine on it's end, as it takes up less room and the
case has feet, but have found recently that it needs a lot more tuning.

Is it better to keep them flat? Does it make any difference?

Thanks

just make care not to leave the instrument in a to high or to low humidity
location,
Ideal is : 50-70 humidity content

Well, not being able to afford a hard case and not trusting a soft one (someone sat on my 12-string guitar once when it was in a soft case - now it's more like a lyre), I keep mine on it's base in a pine storage box from B&Q which (when lined with thin foam) it just fits nicely. It's also part of the furniture in our living room (saves arguments about "and where's THAT instrument going to go?").
It's a little heavy but it does the job.
I must admit, when I first read this I thought you were going to say that a HG plays better if stored East-West or something.

Hi

I store mine flat in the box. I also put in a couple of sachets of
silicon to keep the humidity down. If you go and ask in shoe shops
they have loads of the sachets from the shoes boxes, they help a lot
especially in Britain's increasingly damp climate.
Regards
Robin.

I have heard that Eastern European gurdies prefer to be stored east / west in a dark place and resting in a box filled with soil from the region of origin.
