Hello all.

My first post to this group! I'm currently waiting for my first hurdy-gurdy to
arrive (a Symphonie by Chris Allen). Until it does, there's not much I can do
beyond absorbing myself in all the great information online. So, to focus my
interest somewhere I have created a new website to compile the great hurdy-gurdy
material online:

http://www.gurdypedia.com

Please take a look.

I'd love to make this somewhat of a community site by including relevant
material from other hurdy gurdy enthusiasts. So, if you'd like to write a short
review of your instrument, a CD/DVD, hurdy gurdy book, event or accessory - or
point out some online materials I should include, please email me. If you have
your own hurdy gurdy website, please link to me and I'll be pleased to
reciprocate.

I'm still working on the site, so expect the content to grow over time.

Best regards,

Paul

Wow – that’s a great idea! When’s it all going to get printed into a nice hard cover book? Mind you if it did you’d have to make it a loose leaf one so you could add the new information as it comes.

That link is going straight into my reference file – thanks for that. Have fun with your Symphonie when it arrives.

I’m hoping Neil might make a ‘performance techniques’ DVD – after a suitable period of rest and recuperation of course – so novices like me can learn how to play along with other performers or when singing accompanied by your gurdy etc. Mind you there’s a lot of scope there but also some great opportunities to see the techniques demonstrated in various bands etc.

Maybe for next year?

Aren’t we getting a lot of great learning resources in this forum!? Thanks to all those who’re sharing their knowledge like this – I’m certainly learning heaps.

Reichmann lute-back hurdy gurdy G/C

by paulehowland (Posted Tue, 28 Sep 2010 19:47:23 GMT)
This thread got me looking at Reichmann's website http://www.kurt-reichmann.de/node/10. But I'm puzzled - when I look at the photograph at the top of this page of the end of a gurdy, it looks to me that the top of the gurdy is coming away from the lute body. Surely not? Can anyone explain this photograph - it seems an odd choice to promote his work! Or have I misinterpreted the photograph.

Secondly - and this reflects my poor German - some of his gurdys come "mit mechaniken" - which Google translates just as tuners. What is the option actually referring to?

Thanks,

Paul

Hello,

My first post here. Whilst waiting for my first hurdy gurdy to arrive - a Chris Allen Symphonie - I've started a website to document all the fantastic hurdy gurdy material I've found on the web. You can find the site at:

http://www.gurdypedia.com

Please email me (see link on site) if you wish to contribute any material (e.g. a review of an instrument, accessory, book or DVD) or to let me know of some other good material I may have missed. If you are a luthier or supplier of other gurdy related material, I'll be pleased to link to you.

Best regards,

Paul

Hi Everyone,

I am new to the world of the Hurdy-Gurdy but am also inspired and ready to learn. I do play other instruments (to varying degrees of competency), so I hope some of that experience will assist me in my progress.

My hometown is Seattle, WA USA and I currently reside about half an hour south of the city in Covington.

Besides music, I am also interested in little British cars - I have a 1960 Frogeye Sprite that consumes a large part of my income(!), and I enjoy traditional archery, as well.

I'm looking forward to speaking with you in the forums.

Best Regards,

Bill

Hello all

First post so go easy on me.

A friend has, very kindly , given me a part complete EMS Hurdy Gurdy kit. He
can't remember when he bought it but it was at least 15-20 years ago. Remarkably
all the bits are still there and the main body is completed ready for the
tangent box & wheel to be fitted. Unfortunately the only thing missing is the
set of diagrams and drawings that provide the tangent box dimensions and bridge
details.

I'm pretty sure I can get round this if I have to. Basically I think I could fit
the wheel first and get a decent grip of the relative dimensions from my friends
instrument (an Eaton). But it would be very handy is someone out there would be
wiling to share their drawings with me as it would be nice to start from the
right place.

I have a few other thoughts and questions but this is the most pressing
currently.

Regards.

The most pressing  thing imoh is that the older EMS kits had a bush under the chanter bridge for the front of the axle. This is a nonsense and will ensure the instrument never has a good tone. The bearing or bush must be placed in the strut under the keybox. Bear in mind you need the wheel fitted before you look at keybox dimensions.
Cheers

AFAIK, they are remote selectors for each chanter and drone... that's what draws me more to Neil's gurdies.

Thanks Neil

I saw a comment you made along these lines somewhere else, I believe as a result
of time spent with an an EMS Gurdy you were replacing the axle on. Makes total
sense to me as otherwise the whole assembly will just be like shoving a cushion
into the soundbox.

It may come to fitting the wheel first If I can't get hold of the drawings.
Actually the more I think about it it may be worth doing this in any case The
wheel I have with the kit does not fit squarely on the bearing and I was
thinking of cutting a new one, this would also allow me to use rather better
quality and thicker veneer to face the edge of the wheel. First step will be to
work out a new axle assembly. The current sintered bronze bushes strike me as a
little crude and, as you are supposed to epoxy them in place, difficult to
maintain/replace.

Moving from GC to DG

September 29, 2010 at 7:17 PM

by Lizards (Posted Wed, 29 Sep 2010 23:17:14 GMT)
Thanks Scott,
My great news is that I've struck TRULY lucky! I now own a 2nd hand Chris Eaton lute back, and have had great help from Nigel E first in finding it, then advice on retuning, plus a phone call with Chris, in moving it from G/C to D/G.
It's not perfect yet, but it goes really well already.
I discovered that tuning a sympathetic string from G up to D results in a broken string! ... so the rest went down, and I'm going to experiment with a thinner string too.
I've replaced both chanter strings.
At present I've got the bass drones both in D, but find the lower one, which was G, is a bit too prone to waver, so may need to change to a heavier string and/or change the pressure on the bridge. Scary!
But it's a lovely instrument, and way better than I ever thought I'd own.
Just need to learn to play it quite a lot better now.

Best wishes,
Richard.

Teachers!

I thought it would be a good idea to start a teachers thread. Here are a few British teachers I would personally recommend:

http://www.historicalmusic.co.uk/musici ... tyler.html Steve Tyler travels around the country quite a bit so it is worth emailing him to see if you can get a lesson.

http://www.pigglet.co.uk/phil/index.htm Phil Martin is an excellent teacher who has contributed at the hurdy gurdy festivals in the past, I know he has really helped beginners get the hang of things. I think Phil is in Kent.

http://www.heretique.co.uk/Jon.html Jon Loomes is a very helpful guy who is also a great player. I think he is based in Halifax now.

http://www.hurdygurdy.org/ Chris Allen based in Merthyr Tydfil, maker, player and very nice chap!

http://www.hurdy-gurdy.org.uk/ Neil Brook,Preston, Lancs. I got my first couple of inspirational lessons from Neil, good solid advice :) Neil also has some tuition, maintenance and building DVD's for sale.

http://www.hurdygurdy.biz/ Mike Gilpin Cambridgeshire based maker and teacher. Mike also has some great French Tunebooks for sale...I keep meaning to send off for a copy!

Mike Eaton, based in Somerset another great teacher who has led several workshops at past gurdy festivals. Contact via the forum: http://uk.groups.yahoo.com/group/HurdygurdyForum

http://www.richardhaynesmusicservices.com/index.htm Another very nice chap! Richard Haynes is based in a beautiful part of Yorkshire. A specialist in Baroque who comes from a professional music teaching background. Take a look at his online shop for gurdy goodies. Richard has also held Baroque workshops at past festivals :)

Cecilia Kovacs, based in the Midlands, background in professional music tuition, special interest in Hungarian folk music, mediaeval and music technology, contact via http://www.gurdy.co.uk/

http://claresalaman.com/ Clare Salaman is a professional musician based in London, inspirational!

Although not a professional teacher Paul Sherwood is a very helpful and kind player who gave me lots of lessons when I was living in Lancaster. Thanks Paul!

Hello Clare
did you manage to get any tuition locally?
I have just acquired an instrument and being an absolute novice and living near Andover thought there might be an opportunity to share the learning experience.

Reichmann lute-back hurdy gurdy G/C

Interesting - I think Paul's referring to the edge of the purfling about half an inch above where the axle penetrates the body. It *might* be a trick of the light or a reflection or a photo artefact... but it does look as though there's slight separation (1/16"??), maybe a couple of inches long, between the lighter wood of the soundboard/purfling and the darker wood where the axle and strings are mounted.

Curious.

Wow - what a lovely looking instrument! Unfortunately I need to wait until February or March before it will be ready. :(

I just had this message from Claire:

Would you mind mentioning in the forum that the workshops are almost full and
need to be booked in advance. I can't garantee any space available for people
coming on the day without warning, and I'd hate to send them home ! thank you.

Hello Scott
I cannot get this to work, any chance of sending a normal mp3? D or G will do as I can transpose.
Cheers
