Ooops - sorry Scott & all
Think the email must have picked up the font properties from the item number on the Ebay page  that I copied/pasted and I forgot to enlarge it

I was curious and asked the seller a few questions - his reply is below ....

Hi,
I made the gurdy a couple of years ago from plans purporting to be of a Marchand in the Brussels Conservatoire collection.
I am not a professional instrument maker but have been a designer/maker in wood for 35 years and more recently a modelmaker/historic reconstructor for tv. I've always made musical instruments when time allowed and I built a few gurdies as was fascinated by such a curious and quirky device. However they're so fiddly and time-consuming I couldnt really justify the time and am back to making odd one-off acoustic guitars, which is what I mostly play.
I've had some fun playing this, and it all seems to work ok albeit I'm a beginner.I have the Destrem and Heidemann set-up book but have probably not fully mastered the cottoning/resinning thing to get the best out of it.
Hope thats helpful,
Richard

I had to go get glasses and look at this on my computer to read it. You may want to increase the size of the font on your computer. It is just too tiny to read.

This may be an odd request and maybe not allowed but can I point out
that this clip isn't from anything that has been published or released
commercially (it was recorded at a session) and the tune itself will be
well out of copyright but plays in a loop at Disneyland and Epcot (my
other persona is involved in cataloguing these for historical purposes)
and is the one song we can't identify. I've contacted a lot of people
with no results (Disney don't have a listing of what plays either!).
Ring any bells with anyone?

Hi,
I have no experience with the cover because I made my gurdys without them. But I have seen that
the cover is made completly (with wood purfling) befor bending. But if you want to use any other kind of purfling (shell, bone, plastic...) for inlay, I think that is better made the inlay after the bending.
I hope that this can help you.

In a word, you can't unless you make very thin laminations and even
that's not going to bend enough I would think. You can't soak ebony as
it's impervious to water. The usual way would be to cut the shape out of
a lump of ebony or sections laminated to give a large enough block. Bent
stuff is usually ebonised rather than being ebony.
Ebony splits really easily as well so be prepared if you really want to try.

Hi Dennis
The best way is to make your cover in maple and then inlay the ebony - no thicker than 1mm . The completed ebony veneer can then be glued to the maple base.I made a 25mm thick former to fit inside the cover and then cramp the veneer using high density foam ( foam backed carpet works ) and some 4mm plywood.
Good luck with it.

I've just come across with this site, general hurdy-gurdyness with Hungarian

I know it is mainly in Hungarian, but quite useful with lots of links and info,
use google translator to understand the basics or drop me a line if you are
interested in any particular bits.

is called Rokatanc or Fox Dance and I believe that it is a traditional Hungarian

Hello David,

According to http://imslp.org it forms the first part of '3 Hungarian Rural Dances' by Leo Weiner, published in Budapest 1941. I can't say whether they're composed or arranged from trad. by Weiner. Perhaps Cecelia could shed more light?

Good luck,

Here is another video link for this dance, giving more background. It is also the traditional melody that I know. The version as played by the gurdy group (and perhaps as transcribed by Weiner), is not how I have heard the tune played.

Ebony is best bought sawn - not veneer cut.

Hi,

It's Cecilia shedding the light... This is a Hungarian folk dance tune that was arranged by Weiner. It is a quite wide-spread tune, but most typically related to gypsies as there is evidence from classic literature that it was part of the traditional gypsy wedding in Hungary. It was danced by one man around a hole and some descriptions say it imitated the fox playing with its prey (a hen or a rabbit). Other sources mention that it has obscene dance-cries included in it and some of the movements strongly referred to sexuality. Some of the youtube performances are from Moldva region played on their traditional instruments, they are not gypsies, they are csangos, an ancient Hungarian ethnic group.

I found one link with the score, look for number 4.

http://www.borokas.hu/nepdalok/tancrend2aa.html

The meaning of the words is:

When I catch the devil,
I lock it in a chest,
The more it wriggles,
The more I shake it.

On the original Youtube link it is Bela Szerenyi and his pupils play this tune. This tune also features on Szerenyi's album with Bokros Band called Bourdon Synthesis on the first track which is called Angol Rókatánc (English Fox-dance). Apparently he found an English tune that somewhat resembles to the Fox dance and they play both in the same track.

Hope this helps.

Cecilia

Hi everyone,
I'm a new memeber and long time lapsed player. I joined with the intention of
selling my Henri III EMS kit that I built over twenty years ago and not touched
in many a year since BUT having recently seen (& heard) a chap playing an
electric gurdy on the seafront in Sidmouth (folk festival) and brushing the dust
off it today I've changed my mind, get it working and play is now the order of
the day. I need new strings for a start, I used to have gut ones but no idea of
the make. Just reading through the subject on the other forum and there's a
suggestion that a set of Aquila nylgut baritone ukelele strings were a good and
modestly priced option. Does anyone here have experience with these or any other
reaonably (cheep) suggestions.

I believe there may be an older version of this in one of the Romani compilations by Dr. Eva Davidova. Let me check!

Cecilia

Hi Dennis,

This is a link to Lee Valley , the store where I buy the aniline dye . ( www.leevalley.com ). Warning , this stuff is totally unforgiving.  If you splatter or spill it, it is forever. If you have trouble getting it , depending where you are, let me know and I will buy an envelope of the powder and send it to you.  Good luck. Catch you later, Weldon

I have a suggestion, if you are not set on Ebony,I have a black dye that I use on my Lute necks. It makes Maple look just like ebony. If you think that would solve your problem let me know I would be happy to help you obtain some. Catch you later Weldon

Has anyone on the list sold a Gotschy Phoenix gurdy in the last year or so?
I know of one that could be for sale very soon but the potential seller does not know a current price to work from. It is the standard brown instrument but with pick-up case and a trompett capo.

And, if its conditions are good, like brand new, it is quite common that one should ask for more than the luthier for selling a gurdy that is available right now, instead of being put on a wait list. Used gurdies sometimes go for more than their new counterparts because of that.

anyone know where I can come up with the sheet music for the melody? The tune
is called Rokatanc or Fox Dance and I believe that it is a traditional Hungarian
or Gypsy tune.

Does anyone have an arrangement (sheet music) for solo HG for Vivaldi's "La
Primavera" (Spring)? Just curious before I start doing it myself. Thanks!
