Does anyone
have any tactics for prising sponsorship from people who have taken part in
international treks and challenges? I have one chap who has been on a trek and
owes £600 to make up his minimum sponsorship. He is now pleading poverty and a
lack of time to raise the necessary funds. He signed a contract pledging to
raise £2,500 but I suspect that this does not carry much weight legally.
I have
tried emailing and writing to him to formally request that he consider some
kind of payment plan but without success. He is flatly refusing to do anything
at this time and I think he is hoping that it will just get forgotten.
In terms of
how this has affected the charity – he raised enough to cover the costs of the
trek so we are not out of pocket at all. However, ethically, he raised these
funds on the basis that the majority would be used to support the charity and
this has not happened so he has misled his sponsors.
I would be
really grateful for any suggestions about how I should tackle this or whether
in your experience it is better simply to write it off and not invest any more
time / resources.
Many thanks

Jess, this is an all too familiar problem, and only by setting something like an 8 week pre-trek deadline for all sponsorship to be confirmed can this usually be avoided.
We have an Australian vet who's said she wants to do a Kilimanjaro trek in September 2006, but we've not seen a penny of funds to date, so guess who ain't going.
If it's any consolation, about 25% of marathon runners never pay up their sponsorship post event either.
Charity Challenge run a scheme where all the fundraising must be paid to the charity as it is raised and the participant pays the individual cost of the challenge themselves plus a small (£100) donation. What was the agreement with your event organisers?

We did have an 8-week
pre-trek deadline for 80% of the funds but it was a bespoke challenge and if we’d
enforced this about 3 of our trekkers (of a team of 9) would have been eligible
to go! The contract we had on this occasion stated that we needed a minimum of
9 participants to make the trek viable and we would have incurred costs for
cancelling at relatively short notice. As it turned out this was the right
decision for the majority of participants but I suppose law of averages
suggests that there would be one who would give me grief!
What we have learnt is not
to go for bespoke challenges again – you can be more ruthless with trekkers on
the open trips!
Thanks
Jess

I do think that this is a huge worry for any kind of sponsorship run event. I no when I worked for a national charity and ran abseils targets for these were in excess of £25k per even. So many people 'forgot' to bring the money on the day and never sent the money in afterwards, we ended up having to insist on the money being brought on the day or the person would not be allowed to abseil. The contract participants sign isn't worth the paper its written most of the time. Some people know they can get away with signing an agreement knowing its only a charity and wont have a dept collector chasing the money or the resources!
I do remember asking senior managers to oorganisea solicitors letter to be sent out in the hope of getting some of the money sent in, it was deemed a waste of time... shame that didn't carry down the line when trying to hit targets!
I would be very
interested in hearing comments from others who have come across this problem and what they did to try to over come it and maximise income.

Brunel's ss Great Britain has been shortlisted for the 2006 Gulbenkian Prize for
museums and galleries - the biggest arts prize in Europe.
The winner will be announced at 7pm on Thursday 25 May - you can hear the
announcement live on Radio 4's 'Front Row' programme.
I've not been able to find any in the South West, I'm afraid, but this have
been a number of requests for training in this area so we'd be happy to look
at organising an advanced level course on effective report writing in the
Autumn if that would be of interest.

I would be extremely interested in a one or two day course in the SW on report writing. This is perhaps a weakness, if indeed, I have any!!!

FUNDRAISING AND ASSOCIATED TRAINING 2006
***All courses will be held in Taunton and run from 9.30am – 4pm***
Thursday 6th July – Writing for Fundraisers with Cathy Debenham
For those new to fundraising and those wanting to improve existing skills. Faced with a clean sheet of paper, many of us find that our minds go blank. This session will help fundraisers to write compelling copy for a broad range of audiences and formats. The day will cover:
Defining the purpose and audience for each piece of writing
Key messages and using headlines
Getting started
Techniques and styles for different formats
Communicating complex messages simply
Annual reports, newsletters, appeal letters, press releases and websites are just some of the formats that fundraisers are expected to write for. This practical course will give you confidence to write, whatever your audience. Delegates will apply the techniques learned to real examples from their charity. Cathy Debenham is a marketing consultant helping voluntary organisations to communicate more effectively with all their audiences. As head of communication and fundraising at Hospiscare in Exeter she significantly raised the profile of the hospice – and its income – as the result of a high profile, long term PR campaign. Prior to that she was head of publications at Arthritis Care, responsible for editorial content and production of all information literature, direct marketing material and its lifestyle magazine for people with arthritis.
COST £65BOOKING AND FULL PAYMENT FOR THE COURSE MUST BE RECEIVED BY 16th June

Hi
I am currently in discussions about potential work for an organisation
which is interested in possibly setting up a trading arm. Whilst this
is not likely to be central to my role there, it has been indicated
that they may ask me to do some research around this.
I wonder does anybody have any experience of this that they would be
happy to share?
Thank you
Hi Rebecca - if you want to know a bit about the running of a trading arm do
call me - as part
of my role I am the General Manager of our Trading Company, however dont call me

The organisation should be able to get some support (possibly for free)
in setting up a trading company from someone like Co Active or the
Community Enterprise Unit. www.ceultd.co.uk If they do not cover the
area where the organisation is based I am sure they will point you in
the right direction. The CEU have been brilliant in their help with
setting up a CIC in Devon that I am working on!

This sounds very useful and may be quite enough to get them the help
they need.
