Re: The language of legacies

Hi Gale

I haven't seen an in-depth study, but I've heard it said that 'legacy'
implies a large amount of money, and therefore might put some people
off from including a gift in their will as they assume it has to be
large. I've seen 'bequest' used a couple of times in the UK, but it
tends to be used more widely in the US. It would be interesting to hear
if anyone has tested the use of different terms?

Regards

Claire

Hi All, as many of your know we test language in all our focus groups and having done over 1000 it is relatively clear that bequest is: seen to be American,...

I would add to that the thought that legacy development is such a subtle and sensitive area, it's better to underplay the initial mention than go in like a...

I agree, plant the seed/thought and warm the supporter to the idea and concept that they can remember you with a gift in their Will - we are assuming there is...

Yes, I too agree with this approach. It is true to say that since I was one to one legacy fundraising at RNIB around 6 years ago that many of the people that I...

I agree too. We deliberately mix up the use of "legacy" and "gift in will" / "Remember Cancer Research UK" in our literature and conversations, to try to...
