Hi

Can anyone help with a question about who and how to thank / acknowledge / recognise gifts in wills, where the executors include members of the family or friends as well as solicitors.

Currently, it is my preference to write and thank the family/friend executor for the time and trouble they have taken in admninistering the will and the bequest, let them know the difference the gift makes (what it could fund) and invite them to look round the hospice.  Other member sof the team feel difrerently and thinkwe should only acknowledge receipt of the bequest with the solicitor and not contact the family/friend at all.

What happens at your charity, how well is that received and does it work for you?

Thanks for your advice

Julie

Julie,

Your approach is spot on - so often we fail to close the loop in accepting a legacy gift - it is after all a donation and one would & should always thank for gifts received and if you have contact with the executor/family its great for them to be thanked personally for a gift helping to celebrate the life of the individual who made that gift and the work he/she has enabled. Where perhaps there isn't that proximity of relationship one can always ask the solicitor to pass on a letter of thanks.

Keep up the good work.

Regards,

Iain

Hi Julie

I would always advocate building a relationship with friends and family. They could well be your warmest prospects, they are also your biggest risk in terms of negative PR and - frankly, it's the courteous thing to do.

How that relationship builds is up to both them and you of course - but the sooner the terrain is changed from legal to fundraising terminology, the better.

Hi everyone,

I agree with the advice, and I always try to find the executor and write to them or ask the solicitor if they would be happy to pass on a letter. Also think of it from the executor’s point of view – if I’m the executor of my partner’s will and I carry out their wishes to leave a gift to charity, I think I’d expect a pretty great letter in return! J I would then be much more inclined to support them myself as a way of honouring the deceased.
