After a hard evening being flamed on ConservativeHome for criticising the
boy Cameron, I've out a brief piece up about the media and the election on
my blog.

I'll get a positive piece up about DD on the morrow!

DD is winning the blogging war by far, this woould make an interesting article in the serious press. I am using my contacts to see if I can get this out in the public domain. Any ideas to make the article dynamic would be appreciated

Unfortunately coming late to the game, I don't think

So I have another suggestion. Next week, lets do a
series of Blog bursts. Everyone pick a topic, and
write a good piece about why DD is the best option

building the party, Economics, whatever.

Then we plan our days in advance. One person per day,

Chaps,

Some good ideas.

The challenge is to get the pro-Davis message to the unconverted.
There are about a quarter of a million Conservative Party members
whose votes will decide the leadership contest's outcome - and I'm
not sure how many of them are familiar with the internet, much less
blogs.

So our target audience must also include CP activists, councillors -
even MPs. They alone have best access to the people who will put
crosses on ballot papers.

For my part I am suggesting to fellow Party members that we are in
danger of repeating the 2005 mistake of sounding barely an inch
apart from the current regime and so are not offering a distinctive,
meaningful difference to an apathetic - and, hence, largely
contented - public.

We have to get these people to vote correctly and time is short. As
the man says, most of the members will have voted within days of
receiving their ballot papers so he has, effectively, only a few
weeks to make his mark.

And I'm seeing NOTHING of him in the press at the moment.

I've been out all day, but in order of appearance:

a) the stop DD blog looks a bit thin so far- maybe it's just a wind-up

b) letter writing sounds a good idea- maybe for next weekends papers

c) I'm no good at graphics...but am prepared to give it a go if nobody
else can

And positive, positive, positive...yes. In fact I almost think maybe
we should couch everything we say in terms of all those (shudder) New
Labour words- best, fairest, most dynamic, most modern, most forward
looking, etc etc. I'm going to try it.

We need a Banner. Are any of you handy with graphics?
Or is there a banner in existence?

Hello

Our preference was for Liam Fox but we will now support Davis.

Please count us in at http://www.sterlingtimes.com/

We get about 4,300 hits a day.

We should be happy to do the following:

1. Insert a Pro Davis banner at the top of each page (we need a good banner for
display)

2. Cross-post messages from other blogs into our message board to increase
coverage

3. Carry por-Davis news items throughout the campaign

4. Challenge ill-informed articles published by the mainstream press.

We're with you.

Kind regards - Stephen Lewis

We were supporting Liam Fox but we'll now shift our support to David
Davis.

The media has managed this campaign so we're not well positioned.

It would probably take a Thatcher endorsement now to shift the balance.

We'll put up a banner, and I'll engineer the regular inclusion of
David Davis newspieces.

Has anyone produced any artwork for David Davis banners?

Kind regards - Stephen Lewis

I like the idea of getting people to sign up and the
letter writing thing.

I was thinking of writing a letter from us to a major
Sunday Paper. First we get our numbers up to a more
respectable level. Then we write in emphasising our
combined readership, and the fact that Not all
Conservatives are behind Cameron. Its worth a try.

As for being positive, apart from Principle, DD has
now been cast as Grumpy Old Man in the Media and thus
any negativity reflects very bad on him.

Not sure how helpful this is - but I thought I would circulate.

i know the DD campaignw wants as many people as possible to sign up to their
campaignw ebsite - as I think that is how they intend to communicate with the
members and target any comms before the ballot papers arrive.

Therefore any publicity that can be given to the sign up page on the DD website
wold I think be useful.

Despite being fairly involved with the campaign there are a few things that
could be done from outside the official campaign.

Perhaps we could identify supporters from across the country who can write in
supportive letters to all the papers constantly over the next few days/weeks.

We need to be positive not negative.. Along the lines, DC is clearly a very able
MP, but DD is....... x y and z and the best man to lead the Conservatives to
victory.

Key messages about DD to stress:-

Judge him on his record
Experience counts
Background counts
The Unity candidate
A strong leader

Then I think its also worth focussing on areas of similarity. Both DC and DD
would modernise our party. They are the same – therefore what is different…
which brings us back to the key messages to stress..

Just a starter for 10.

Happy to provide contact lists for all the nationals – but we could do we good
coverage in the Regionals and local too – as that’s what people read.

It probably will amount to nothing so we should not
help its publicity, but here is the latest addition to
the other side.

I have been thinking about Blog Bursting, if anyone
thinks that is a good idea.

Well, as somebody once observed "I have nothing to offer but blood
sweat and blogging."

First, as Serf says, we need to increase our numbers. At his
suggestion I have sprungcleaned the Bloggers For Davis list,
ruthlessly purging turncoats and even my whimsical inclusion of Tom
Watson.

I've also- again following Serf- put DDFL onto Technorati, and I've
been tracking back through bloggers who've linked to us. So far-
alas- the only new BFD is the Darlington Tory: I've emailed him just
to make sure he's onside.

Naturally I've discovered quite a few fairweather friends- eg:

"David Davis has shown, in one speech, why he is the leader the
Conservatives and, indeed, England, need.

He has made an impassioned speech that talks of the very basis of
his beliefs and looks to his origins. David Davis has said what
everyone secretly knew but couldn't articulate - that England needs
opportunity for all not limited by a welfare state but augmented by
state-sponsored compassion.

I commend David Davis and hope he wins the leadership contest."

Who was that- just a month ago? Why, Gavin Ayling, now blogging as:
http://gavinayling.blogsome.com/

So we need other suggestions- all gratefully recieved.

Second, please let me know when you post pro-DD items- so I can link
to them immediately. Of course, I would be delighted to take guest
posts from any of you on DDFL...but I'm wondering if we'd have more
impact with a lot of links, referenced from DDFL. What do you all
think?

Third, I am going to do a weekly round-up a la Serf's on Once More.
I'll stick a draft on here first to see if I've missed anything.

Fourth, I'm doing a series of posts on DD/DC policy differences. My
particular areas of interest are the economy and public services.
Any volunteers for other areas?

Let's get going.

Best wishes

Wat (aka Mike)

Have you asked The Political Thinker? Former Fox man - now for Davis:

http://www.realpolitics.co.uk/

In terms of lines to take, I think this is bang on the money:

Sir - We understand how we public schoolboys (and gals) have to stick
together, but even I am bemused by the relentlessness of the Telegraph and
Spectator group in promoting the cause of David Cameron to be the next Tory
party leader (News, October 16).

It is claimed that he leads the polls in the Tory countryside; that is the
result of the media-hype campaign. Your group is probably the primary
reading matter among the 300,000 members who will have six weeks to make the
choice.

The power of the media is such that its own hyping can achieve the
apotheosis of the chosen recipient and create the poll lead. The media
should never pretend that the reaction to the agitprop is spontaneous and
they are only reporting facts as a detached observer. That is dishonest.

David Davis brings to the contest his knowledge of: inner cities,
deprivation, struggle, grammar school, redbrick, business, commerce,
industry, the North, the Midlands, the working class, the middle class, the
suburbs, the Army and the views of a practising Christian. And inside
politics, 18 years' slog, five important offices and a Privy Councillorship.

Mr Cameron brings his experiences: nanny, prep school, Eton, Oxford, riding
to hounds, St James's clubs, the aristocracy, privilege, stately homes,
private wealth, hunt balls, and the Home Counties; plus 11 years' attendance
at party headquarters. And as an MP, four whole years, the shortest period
of any leader-candidate in party history.

On a more serious note… supposing The Sunday Telegraph editorial conference
was told that the Editor, Sarah Sands, was resigning and the editorship
would pass to a cub reporter who had been a working journalist for four
years. The response would be a stunned, disbelieving silence. Point taken?

Dear Friends and Davis Supporters

Now that the race is into its final stage Wat and I
have been thinking about how to broaden our Blogging
campaign on behalf of DD. Up until today, Wat has done
a great job of cheerleading the campaign in the
blogsphere, but he can’t do it all himself. This
mailing list is designed to help us pool our ideas and
readers and make a much bigger impact than we could
possibly manage on our own.

The brutal truth is that failing a major turnaround,
our man is not going to win the leadership. The Media
has taken to his opponent and decided that he is the
winner. The polls on the weekend do not look good.
David Davis himself was quoted in the papers as saying
that he had only three weeks to turn it around.

So what can we band of mere bloggers do against the
might of the Press & BBC?

It is my belief that Cameron’s big lead is a result of
the fact that members believe he is going to win. They
will vote for him because everyone else is voting for
him. Our Man is actually closer to them in terms of
beliefs, background and age (though don’t shout about
that too much).

So the one thing that we can attempt to do is to
undermine the idea that everyone loves Cameron. By
clearly identifying ourselves as his supporters and
regularly posting about the campaign, we can try to
create the image that Conservative Bloggers are
heavily in the Davis Camp. We can Force the other side
to argue their man’s case.

We need to find a constant and steady stream of new
Blogger For Davis, to add to Wat's list. The image of
Momentum is very imortant.

I personally believe that we should keep to a positive
message, because attacking the blue eyed boy has
proved counterproductive, is Labour’s job not ours and
lets face it, we will probably need to speak up for
him later.

As of Today, there are just about 10 members of the
group. What I will request from you is the names of
other Bloggers who are supporting Davis. Bearing in
mind the time constraints, we need to reach a much
higher number in a very short space of time.

This leadership campaign is an excellent chance for
all of us Conservatives to have an open debate about
where our party needs to go. It keeps us in the
headlines and keeps our ideals in the spotlight. Let’s
both make the most of this and also do our best to
undermine the image that Cameron has already won it.

The list is open to all of you, lets hear your views.

Serf
