Re: [LocalWatch] Land to the Rear of Uplands Road, and other morrshels

Count me in

Dear all -

I think we should meet up to discuss below-mentioned problem (anyone who is interested) to see what can be done (if anything). Depending on numbers, we may have to find a room/garden somewhere. I think Kenny must mean Rathcoole Gardens(?) That’s where he lives, last time I looked.

I agree with everything everyone says about the noticeboard (see yahoo group dialogue). I will bung some stuff at Emma and let her work out what to do with it.

Yes, let’s have another newsletter. I will do production (unless Sarah meant what she said), but would appreciate some copy, esp pix. On any subject.

I have had more negative feedback re noise from Cranford Way, esp early Sunday morning and Tues morning – something resembling digger racing. Have things improved at all? Do we need to ratchet this up?

Below is the latest in a flurry  from Crouch End SNT. Still all quiet from Hornsey.

There is an open house at Hornsey town hall this Saturday from 10am to 4pm.  It’s all about “Architecture in the Flesh”. Frances knows more than I do.

Bruno

Kenny says (for benefit of non-yahoo people I the bcc field):
“This is not an issue that will affect everyone in the MORSH area... But it does affect quite a few..  I hope it wont be ruled out of order as it does not affect everyone...

I think that all the residents with a property that backs on to the land at the rear of Uplands Rd/ Bottom of Rathcoole Ave that backs on to the Cranford Way estate will  have now received the official solicitors letter from Addleshaw Goddard  asking them to remove the encroachment on to land claimed by Threadneedle Pensions Ltd (the current leaseholders) as part of  the industrial estate. The postman had a load of these letters in his sack..

This affects a small green area that is important for quite a bit of wildlife and acts as a buffer between the houses and the estate at the rear of Uplands Road and the bottom of Rathcoole Ave. Some of this area has been used as garden for many many years. Not withstanding the fact that the trees have preservation orders on them I am extremely worried that this is a precursor to a development project on what is currently a very necessary small plot of green unused land.

They are also offering to allow those affected to pay for a licence to use the land already being used as garden, but do not offer a price and the licence can be withdrawn by them at any time.

This is extremely bad news.. I don’t know if there is anything that can be done to fight this, but as a bunch of individuals I don’t think we have a hope..
I urge that all those affected, and any others who are interested in helping, get together rather quickly and address this.. We’re going to need legal help with this one I think... There’s a real danger of losing something rather precious here..

Thoughts and comments please?... Should we have a bit of a meeting? (as MORSH or not)..
Ofer...  HELP!! :-P

Kenny  79 Rathcoole

PS. (My property boundary doesn’t actually back on to this area but I am / will be affected)”

Latest from Crouch End SNT:
“Crouch End Direct Issue 9

The patrols the team have been making do seem to be having an effect. Lots going on on the ward this week but the burglary , vehicle crime and robbery offences have shown a reduction. The schools were back last week too and this does tend to increase the workload at certain times of the day. Whilst the weather remains fair the Town Hall square will remain a focal point at lunchtime and in the evenings and personally I think this is to be encouraged and helps to give Crouch End its unique character. The problem, as with most things, comes with irresponsible people. Those who abuse the area and do not treat it, or other people, with respect. Two arrests were made this week in the square involving young girls assaulting another youngster. The team also dealt with another young lad in possession of drugs on the Broadway. We will continue in our effrots to make the Broadway and the Square pleasurable places for anyone who wants to use them for the correct purposes!

The detail behind the headlines.....
Crime:
Burglary:
A significant reduction in the number of offences this week. Computer equipment remains the most likely item to be stolen. Two of the premises targeted are first floor flats and entry has been gained via climbing hedgerow / drainpipes and gaining acess to open windows. Something to be mindful of..

Crouch Hall Road       Tue       0015 - 0700      climbed hedge to open 1st floor window        2 laptops
Christchurch Road      Wed       1900 - 2355      brick through ground floor window             no entry gained
Wolesley Road        Wed/Thu     2000 - 1700      side door forced                              mazda vehicle / game console
Berkeley Road          Fri          1850          insecure kitchen window                       handbag and contents
Mount View Road        Sat       1700 - 2105      insecure first floor window                   computer / bank cards
Generally a lot of premises are broken into via the rear patio doors. There are some good safety tips regarding the best means of securing these on www.met.police.uk/crimeprevention/doors.htm Another thing to ensure is that all your tools and garden equipment are locked away. You don't want your own garden spade that you left by the back door being used to prise it open! The team patrols will continue to focus on the reduction of residential burglaries.

Robbery:
No street robberies were reported on Crouch End last week, however there was an incident during which a gentleman who had just visited a cash machine on the Broadway was bumped into and had the cash 'pickpocketed'. It's always a good idea to have a look around before drawing out a significant amount of money.

Vehicle Crime:                                                                                                                                                                                                                             Just two offences of theft from vehicles this week. It may be purely coincidence but both vehicles were peugeots.

Claremont Road         Sat/Tue        1500 - 1900       Door frame bent back           Clothing                          Gladwell Road          Sat/Sun        1230 - 1500       No sign of forced entry        CD's

Over recent months a lot of blue 'disabled driver' permits have been stolen as the result of vehicle crime. With the pressures on parking growing ever increasing these can be sold for substantial sums. During this week the team, along with colleagues from the council traffic department conducted an operation in Crouch End during which the authenticity of the badges displayed was checked on a number of vehicles. Although no theft offences were detected we did receive useful intelligence on cases of fradulent use and detected a number of vehicle / driving offences. Knowing how important the parking issues are locally this is an operation we intend to repeat.

Other Issues:
This week one of our local councillors and I visited two of our more 'remote' roads, having leafleted them beforehand. The idea was to speak in person to local people about 'their' issues. Residents of Colwick Close and Hannay Lane spoke to us on a number of topics including crime, fly-tipping, anti-social behaviour and gun crime. The intention is to repeat this in as many similar parts of the ward as possible over coming weeks and months, however don't wait for us to visit you....if you have a problem please do get in touch and talk it through.

I mentioned last week about the up-coming 'have a say day'. This provides you all with an opportunity to meet the team in person and let us know what issues concern you. This in turn helps to create our'ward priorities' for the following 6 months. We will be in and around Crouch End Broadway on Saturday 22 September between 12pm and 3.0pm. Please come and speak to us.....it can get a bit lonely!

Next week I will provide you with an opportunity to register your concerns via e-mail, but don't let this stop you coming down on the day.....it's nice to put a name to a face!

One of the team, PC Reynolds was attempting to stop a local suspect on Friday. This man is 'wanted' by police and did not wait to be detained. He headbutted the officer and made good his escape before other units could arrive. James was not badly hurt but it was obviously a nasty incident. All this in the name of keeping Crouch End Safer!

Please keep the correspondence coming,
Many thanks
John McGrath
