Application for a Lap Dancing Club in Crouch End
Crouch Enders should be aware that an application for a "lap-dancing/gentleman's club", at the Music Palace, Tottenham Lane (opposite the YMCA) has been submitted. You can probably picture the obvious massive and unwelcome changes which would result from the presence of such an establishment, in what has hitherto been a relatively quiet, residential, shopping and conservation area. Rokesly School is immediately opposite the building. The licensing hours applied for are 11am to 2am 6 days a week.
The current licensees of the building are the applicants for the new licence, and are putting forward an application with a list of operating procedures which they hope will prevent inebriation, rowdy behaviour, late night departures and the other evils associated with such establishments! Even if they are not being unduly optimistic, their successors in holding the licence, which if granted is difficult to remove, may not be so diligent, and a precedent will have been set.
It is well documented that, in general, such clubs tend to become the centre of areas especially prone to rape and harassment; that prostitution is an almost inevitable spin off; that they are likely to be centres of drug dealing; and that the women who work there are generally subjected to sexual and financial exploitation by both management and clientèle. Under the terms of the 2003 Licensing Act there is a real possibility that the application may succeed, unless Haringey, as Licensing Authority, is persuaded that there will be a breach, at these particular premises, of one of the four objectives:
- The prevention of crime and disorder;
- Public safety;
- The prevention of public nuisance; and
- The protection of children from harm.
fear that the thin end of a tawdry wedge was put in place when late licences were granted to a number of pubs in the area. This is the wedge being firmly driven into Crouch End's fundament, and would give rise to painful consequences if allowed to proceed. There is a facebook group for those wishing to oppose this application which has links to a number of recent articles in the press. http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=520351268#/group.php?gid=53768774705&ref=mf <http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=520351268#/group.php?gid=53768774705&ref=mf>
What you should do
If you think that lap dancing would be a bad thing for Crouch End:
- Make this point, forcefully, to your councillor or MP (see list of email addresses below}
- Join the facebook group and keep up to date with news.
- Formulate a compelling argument that this particular lap-dancing club (not such clubs in general) will breach any of the four objectives and post it on the facebook site and send it to councillors and MP
- If you have any useful contacts with the local media which could be used to heighten awareness then let the group know using the facebook page.
- Write to the press (Hornsey Journal, Ham and High, Daily Telegraph, whatever)
Other Help
We would very much like to find the Conveyance of 1912 of the site (now 159a Tottenham Lane) from William Edward Weldon to William Booth (the founder of the Salvation Army). Anyone who knows where/how to look please contact adressian-haringey@..., or post something on the facebook page.
