Subject: Big Green Newsletter with added links

Hello,

This weeks Newsletter has a slightly different look to it.

Rather than just list what was happening over the next few weeks, on here we decided to put everything we’re doing on the events page of our website, including book groups, knitting, storytelling etc. and just putting a link on the newsletter for you to go directly to it to see what’s happening.

HERE’S THE LINK. CLICK ON THIS

Obviously, in the newsletter we’ll highlight what’s going on this week and also any new events we’ve arranged, but we want it to be more ‘newsy’.

So..

  • We’ve set a date for the next Local Market. It’s Sunday August 21st at 10am. We still have spaces for stalls, so if you’re local & you have anything to sell (fruit & veg, crafts, preserves etc) please get in touch.

  • A reminder that we’re doing storytelling and songs 3 times a week in the shop now. Monday, Wednesday and Friday at 11am. Ideal for under 5’s and free tea and coffee. Come along.

  • Reservations for the evening with The Stranglers’ Hugh Cornwell on Thursday August 25th are going fast, so if you want to guarantee a place, please get in touch and let us know.

  • This Sunday August 7th at 11am we are having our first committee meeting for a while. The discussions will be about how the shop looks and types of events you want to see in the bookshop. If you want to come along and contribute to this we’d be really pleased.

  • The bit by the side of our shop (you know, that really horrible bit where people dump things and occasionally park) is looking particularly messy. We’ve had one or two ideas about what to do with it, but with a budget of less than £50 and a bookshop to look after, it’s tricky. We originally wanted to put some kind of community garden there and still do, with an area to sit down. We would need to clear it and fence it to ensure it remained lovely. We’d love to clear it soon, so any ideas/help would be appreciated. We’ll let you know when 'Operation Clearup' begins.

Big events coming up soon;

Bobby George – Saturday August 13th at Midday until 2.00pm.

How To Get Your Children’s Book Published – Tuesday August 16th 7.00pm

Comedy – Friday August 19th at 8.00pm headliner, Nathaniel Tapley (aka Sir Ian Bowler).

Subject: Incident room set up regarding recent disturbances

Dear Neighbourhood Watch coordinator

During the evening and into the night of Saturday 6th August 2011 public disorder and criminal damage to residential and business premises ensued within the London borough of Haringey.  This has been widely reported in the media both at local, regional and national level.

On Sunday 7th August and Monday 8th August further disorder has resulted in criminal damage to shops, residential buildings and vehicles being badly damaged across London.

The Metropolitan Police Service has dealt with several incidents of ‘copycat criminal activity’ across London which has resulted in over 450 arrests for criminal offences.  The MPS is aware of the impact this is having on our community and is making every effort to combat further criminal activity by increasing the levels of high visibility patrols across London.

At this time criminal activity is taking place across a number of areas.  There is no intelligence of specific targeting of identified business premises.

Operation Withern has been set up to investigate the disorder and violence in parts of London over the past few days.  The Operation Withern team will investigate and identify those people responsible to ensure that they are brought to justice.

An incident room has been set up and anyone with information should call the major investigation team on

020 8345 4142.

The MPS has extra resources on duty across the capital.  We are carefully monitoring any intelligence and ensuring we have our resources in the right places to support the ongoing policing plan.  We will continue to respond to the needs of London’s communities and deal with any incidents of criminality.

People with business premises may wish to take the following precautionary measures. Please pass this information to people you may know that this could assist:

    • Where possible retail premises should be suitably staffed with security guards
    • Ensure staff report any suspicious activity to security and/or police
    • Consider regular checks of the building and surrounding area
    • Identify areas that are vulnerable to forced entry
    • Make sure all service doors are kept locked and secure when not in use
    • Ensure your CCTV system is fully operational
    • In case of an emergency is there a record of the names of keyholders who can be contacted
    • Consider removing high value goods from display windows overnight
    • Consider keeping as little cash as possible on the premises
    • Ensure that your premises are secure and if fitted your alarm systems are fully operational
    • In the event of a non emergency, call the police on non emergency number 101
    • In the event of an emergency, call the emergency number 999

Dear Neighbourhood Watch coordinator

I am aware that you may be receiving quite a few emails from us regarding the recent disorder.
You may also be receiving some emails twice as your SNT will be corresponding with you as well.  I apologise for increasing in the size of your inbox and any duplications but feel it is important that we keep you up to date with what is going on and pass on any request for your help; which you are always so fantastic in responding to.

These CCTV images are from incidents of looting in Croydon over last night and in Norwood Road SE27 in the early hours of this morning.

We have been asked by Kit Malthouse  (Chair of the Metropolitan Police Authority) to share the following important message with you about the violent disturbances across London in the last few days. We know that many of you are active in your communities in a number of ways, in churches and faith groups, schools and community associations and other activities connected to police and community relations.  We would ask that you take the opportunity to relay these messages.

 ·         The looting and rioting over the last few days is pure criminality. There is no excuse or rationale for this. Those responsible will be caught and brought before the courts to answer for their actions.

·         We will work with local communities to make sure we deal with these individuals. Photographs are being published and we are urging Londoners to help identify those responsible for this mindless violence. You can find the pictures here: http://www.flickr.com/photos/metropolitanpolice/

·         Quick and decisive action by police means that more than 525 arrests have been made so far and the resources are being put in place to continue to police London effectively in the coming days

·         We must remember that the vast majority of Londoners are appalled by this violence, as are most young Londoners. We are determined to make sure they can go about their normal business and live without fear of disruption and violence.

·         Independent Custody Visitors have been making extra visits to custody suites across London to ensure that detainees are being properly treated and we are reassured that no problems have arisen to date.

·         Please be patient with the police. All the properties and vehicles that have been damaged or destroyed need to be examined; to ensure they are structurally safe to be entered, but also because they are crime scenes and the police must be given time to gather evidence that will help bring people to justice.

·         We must remember that the family of Mark Duggan has condemned the violence, which detracts from their search for answers.

We would urge to you work with the police and others to help communities recover and return to normal as soon as possible

Dear Neighbourhood Watch coordinator
I am doing my best to send you as few emails as possible so have put a few together in one email:

Officer/police dog injury update
The serious criminal unrest experienced in London over the past three days has left dozens of officers injured, some seriously.

111 officers have been reported injured across London after having experienced unprecedented violence directed at them as they have been policing London, striving to protect the public, local communities and property.

Many officers are still undergoing hospital treatment, some requiring surgery. Injuries range from fractured bones, serious head injuries, concussion, cuts and sprains, even injured eyes from smashed and thrown glass.

Officers have been attacked with bricks, bottles, planks of wood and other missiles. In some incidents, officers have been hit by motor vehicles, seriously risking their lives and those of the public.

Five police dogs have been injured as they have undertaken their duties in dealing with the unrest.

Linpol Luke, also known as Obi, sustained a serious head injury from a thrown brick and requires further treatment.
Marshfield Mia was injured after being hit by a thrown bottle. Both dogs were injured on duty on Sunday.
On Monday, Minstrel Blaze, Quirk Ruby and Zach all sustained injuries, including broken teeth and cuts from thrown missiles.

Mounted section officers have played a vital role and after successive shifts facing hostile crowds the officers and their horses are tired yet no injuries have been sustained and they will continue to play their part in keeping London safe.

Deputy Assistant Commissioner Steve Kavanagh said:

"The level of violence directed against our officers as they have bravely done their duty to keep London safe is unprecedented. We haveover 50 officers who have needed treatment - some may even require surgery. Our dog units and mounted section have faced tough conditions
and some have suffered injuries also.

"We are dealing with dangerous criminals; men and women, boys and girls, who are willing to put lives at risk and target the very people that are here to keep our communities safe.

"But this is not just about my officers who continue to do their very best. This is also about the damage these thugs are doing to our neighbourhoods. Local shops and businesses have been ruined, householders have been left homeless and great damage done to our local
services and infrastructure.

"We are now undertaking an operation to identify those responsible and to bring them to justice. We will not tolerate this dangerous behaviour."

Anyone with information relating to the violent unrest experienced in London is urged to contact the incident room hotline, to report any information which may assist investigators as they bring arrests against those responsible for looting, disorder and violence. Call the incident
room hotline on 020 8345 4142 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.

Arrests update
The Metropolitan Police Service has now arrested a total of 768 people in connection with violence, disorder and looting across London.

Since 9pm on Tuesday 9 August, 81 arrests have been made for various offences.

These include:

- At approx 23:00hrs, in a proactive operation, officers executed a search warrant at an address in Church Road, Harlesden, NW10. A mobile phone was found containing pictures of a looted shop and jewellery. A gold chain matching the photo on the phone was also found.

A man in his late teens / early 20s was arrested for handling stolen goods and is in custody.

At 00:30hrs officers on patrol in West Ella Road, Harlesden, NW10 arrested 19 people on suspicion of conspiracy to commit burglary after they were seen standing by two transit vans appearing to be preparing to go looting.

The men, aged approximately between 18 and 30-years are currently in custody.

Police are appealing for members of the public only to contact the Operation Withern Major Investigation Team number (020 8345 4142) if they have specific information about those individuals who have been involved in the violence and disorder that has occurred across London over the past few days.

The team are receiving a significant number of calls that are not directly related to their investigation. These calls are impeding the ability of those with relevant information to get through to officers.

9 August 2011

Dear Neighbourhood Watch Co-ordinator,

We hope very much that you and your Watch are keeping safe in the current dreadful state of affairs locally, all over London, and now extending across the country.

If you have been personally affected, we extend to you our sincere good wishes and hope that the levels of violence and lawlessness will diminish as quickly as possible.

It’s important that our Watches are kept informed of what is happening to allay rumour and unnecessary scare-mongering.   It’s also important that they pass on any information they may have about youngsters who have been taking part in the rioting and looting.

Pauline Syddell has been sending out regular information as have the SNT sergeants.    Please ensure that information from them is passed on to your Watch and that your more vulnerable members are being reassured and supported.   Probably our most important role as Co-ordinators at the moment is to do just that and to continue to build the positive sense of community that already exists in the Watches.

We will ensure that there is time set aside at our next Haringey Association of Neighbourhood Watches meeting in September to discuss the aftermath of the situation and to share ideas about ways forward into the future.

More details of the meeting will be forwarded later.

Keep safe!

With very best wishes,
Robert How (HANHW Chair) and the Committee

Haringey Borough Commander Detective Chief Superintendent Sandra Looby said: "I have been to look at the damage in Tottenham High Road personally and I was present in Haringey on the day of the tragic set of circumstances that led to the death of Mark Duggan.

"The subsequent disorder is completely unacceptable and does not reflect the Haringey that we live and work in or visit on a day to day basis.

"I am working alongside the local authority, key partners, and importantly the community in not only planning to return the borough to normality but to do everything we can to prevent this happening again."

"I want to pay particular thanks to the front line emergency services, the bravery of my staff on the streets and also the sometimes forgotten backroom staff who are striving hard to return the borough to the great place that it is."

"I urge the community to join us in condemning the violent disorder that witnessed over recent days and to provide police with any images or information you may have regarding who was responsible. Operation Withern is investigating the disorder and violence in parts of London. An incident room has been set up. Anyone with information should call the Major Investigation Team on 020 8345 4142.

Dear coordinator
Your help needed:  Images released following disorder in Haringey on 6 August

Detectives from Operation Withern are today (Wednesday 10 August) releasing the second tranche of images of people police would like to speak with in relation to recent disorder affecting parts of London.

Operation Withern's priority is to bring to justice those who have committed violent and criminal acts. As the detailed and thorough investigation progresses we will be issuing photographs of people who were in the vicinity of the disorder and who may be able to help officers with their enquiries.

These images we are releasing today relate to the looting and violent disorder in Tottenham, Haringey and Wood Green on 6 August.

If anyone recognises individuals in the photographs or has any information about the violence and disorder that has occurred they should contact the Major Investigation Team on 020 8345 4142. Alternatively anyone can report crime and provide information anonymously to Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.

A dedicated webpage has gone live displaying the images of people the Metropolitan Police Service wants to speak to in connection with the serious disorder and violence that has been affecting parts of London: http://www.met.police.uk/disordersuspects/

In addition Flickr is hosting the same photos so that the public have as many opportunities as possible to help the MPS identify those who committed violent and criminal acts on London's streets: http://www.flickr.com/photos/metropolitanpolice/sets/72157627267892973/

Dear Neighbourhood Watch coordinator

Haringey Council have arranged for a community clean up tomorrow to show the strength of community spirit in Tottenham.

As Tottenham High Road re-opens on Saturday following last weekend’s devastating disturbances, this is a chance for people to unite in efforts to get the area back on its feet.

Haringey councillors and volunteers will be out on the streets tomorrow morning (Saturday, August 13) aiding the clear-up operation and showing support to local traders.

Anyone who would like to help is invited by the Council to come along and lend the community their backing
either by sweeping the streets, helping to clear rubbish from affected homes and businesses, or simply popping into local stores to do some shopping.

"This is our chance to celebrate Tottenham’s unique strength of character and unity in the face of recent disturbances.", said a council spokesman.

Those interested in taking part are invited to gather on the green on Tottenham High Road by Rheola Close, just south of the junction with Lansdowne Road, from 10.30am for an 11am start.

Note: Tottenham High Road will be re-opened on Friday evening. Lansdowne Road, Dowsett Road and Factory Lane remain closed until further notice

A clear and unified vision to return Haringey to everyday life and business

The events of Saturday 6th, Sunday 7th and Monday 8th August were unprecedented in scale and breadth. Monday night was the worst the MPS has seen in current memory for unacceptable levels of widespread looting, fires and disorder. Officers put themselves on the line to protect life and communities.

Officers across Haringey are working hard to engage with the local community and businesses.

Regular meetings are being held between police, community representatives and partners including the local authority and fire brigade.

Several key members of the community from ward panels, trading associations, and Independent Advisor Group (IAG) representatives attended a meeting at the police patrol base in Wood Green on 11.08.11 to discuss concerns and find ways to drive the borough forward and back to normality as soon as possible.

Haringey Borough Commander Sandra Looby, who attended the meeting, said: “One thing that has been incredibly apparent over the last few days has been the overwhelming desire of the community to unite against the disorder. There is a clear and unified vision to return Haringey to everyday life and business.

“The community have actively embraced police and worked with police to unite against wanton criminality. We all share a determination to bring to justice those responsible for damaging the very fabric of our community and to move forward.

“Already those that have harmed the community have seen the wrath of the law, with more than 900 arrests and counting across London.

“We are working together with our partners to make Haringey a safe borough for young and old alike and to ensure that those most affected by the disorder receive the appropriate support. We will do everything in our power to ensure that businesses are up and running as soon as possible.

“I would sincerely like to thank the community for their patience and their messages of support. I hear of people talking to officers on cordons or on patrol in the street and thanking them for their efforts. There are many other members of the police service, including detectives and members of police staff, that have been working around the clock to deliver the levels of policing you have been seeing. I know they all really appreciate your kind words.

"People have shown the community spirit that is representative of Haringey and together we will return the borough to the safe and harmonious area that it deserves to be.”

Clasford Stirling MBE, a community developer who has worked on the Broad Water Farm Estate for 32 years, said: "This unity of all the different agencies in the borough working together will not stop until we improve our borough and try to address what has happened and bring our lives back to normality. I am proud to be part of this united approach.

"I understand all the problems going on and I strongly disagree with how people have echoed their frustration in the wrong way, putting their own lives and the lives of police and others at risk. The police are part of our community and everyone should welcome them. The bravery of police to help residents during the disorder is to be commended."

Hello everyone.

I just thought I'd give you an update on the current situation and the proposed changes.

The team have been subject to long hours under some difficult circumstances. All have assisted in preserving the scene at the shooting incident and from then on have been involved in taskings off and on the borough. We have had regular engagement with the youths from the estate and sort to reduce any tension regarding the outbreaks of disorder. It would appear that thankfully things are returning back to normal and we would hope to revert back to normal duties by early next week.

The decision on the reduction on SN Sgts has been delayed for another week. The changes will mean that Hornsey will amalgamate with Stroud Green, Highgate with Crouch End and Alexandra Palace with Fortis Green. Muswell Hill will stay unchanged.

Hello,
we have a load of stuff to tell you about this week, so I won't dilly dally.

1.
Tickets for this Friday's comedy night are selling quickly. It's a Benefit Show to raise money for the Tottenham Fund, so if you want to come along it would be wise to get in touch with the shop to reserve tickets.
2.
We are introducing a secondhand section in the bookshop. We will happily accept any donations that you have but will also consider buying books too. We will initially be concentrating on fiction (crime, science fiction etc all fit into this bracket) and children’s books to compliment our present stock profile. We prefer paperbacks, but will happily accept any books you'd like to give us!
Please get in touch with us if you have any questions.
3.
On Thursday 18th (this Thursday) there will be a thing called a BOOKSWAP.
Here's the info.
18th August, 7:30pm at the Duke of Edinburgh, corner of Coburg Rd and Mayes Rd, N22 (closest tube: Wood Green), Book Swap Haringey. Bring a book you have read and want to swap, have a drink and a chat with other people who like reading!
I've been to one of these things before and they are great fun. You also come away with a book that you haven't read before, in exchange for one that you no longer want, so it's ace.
This isn't a Big Green Bookshop thing, but we like the idea of them and would very much encourage you to go along.
4.
We are making a list. It started a couple of weeks ago when I asked a question on Twitter. This is the question I asked.
'If you owned a bookshop, what's the first book you'd get for the bookshelves? What's the one book you'd hate to run out of?'
We got a fantastic response and the suggestions are still coming in. If you have minute to spare AFTER you've read the newsletter, please reply to tell us what book you'd choose.
The list so far is available to see here http://woodgreenbookshop.blogspot.com/2011/08/if-you-had-bookshop-whats-first-book.html

RIGHT

Here are all the things that are happening in the Bookshop this week. Go on, read it. I dare you. Better still; turn up at one of them.

Saturday August 20th 10.30am onwards
Operation 'Clean Up The Bit By the Side of the Bookshop'

Those of you who have visited the bookshop will have probably noticed the weed filled gravelled area to the left of our bookshop that looks like a teeny tiny car park and is often full of rubbish that passersby throw in there. This area is actually ours (we pay rent on it!) and we'd like to make more of it. So this Saturday, we're going to be having a big Clean Up day.
There's a lot of rubbish that needs to be cleared and taken to the dump and lots of weeding too, but by the end of the day we're hoping that the area will be a totally cleared and ready for stage 2 of our plan. This will be to add some raised beds, plant some flowers, put up fencing, so that rubbish doesn't get chucked in there, and put out a couple of tables and chairs, so people can sit outside when it's sunny, read a book and have a coffee.
We'd be really grateful if you could come along to help with the clean up on Saturday. There aren't many places in Wood Green where you can sit outside and it will be great when it's finished.
The other part of this shameless plea is, does anyone have any fencing panels lying around that they could spare for stage 2 of Operation Clean Up? I realise this is highly unlikely, but we're looking for some 6 foot high wooden fence panels to put up to ensure that the area stays clean and tidy after Saturday.
If you do, please get in touch.
Hope you can come along and that the weather's nice.

Saturday August 20th 10.30-11.30

Children’s Book Group- The Knife of Never Letting Go by Patrick Ness
Our monthly children’s Book group will be talking about the first of Patrick Ness's brilliant trilogy. This group is aimed at kids of around 9-12 who love reading and don't mind talking about books. Come along.

Saturday August 20th 11.30-1.00pm
Children's illustrator Zehra Hicks joins us for Tooth related Tomfoolery

I recently visited a wonderful independent bookshop called The Bookbarge (it's a bookshop on a barge) on its 6 month tour of the country. Whilst I was on board they had a fantastic author event by Zehra Hicks, who has written and illustrated a kids book called The Boy Who Hated Toothbrushes. It was great fun and Zehra was brilliant.
Not one to miss out on an opportunity, I asked if Zehra would like to visit the Big Green Bookshop to do something similar. The answer was YES.
The book itself centres around Billy, who as you can probably guess, hates cleaning his teeth. Then he is given a Funtastic Toothsparkler by the Tooth Fairy. Is this enough to get Billy to clean his teeth? Well you'll have to find out on August 20th, when Zehra will be here reading from her book and getting us to design some fantastic toothbrushes of our own.
This should be a great fun event and we hope that you can make it

Sunday August 21st 10.00am-12.00
Big Green Bookshop Local Market

The second of our Mini-Farmer’s Market inside and outside the shop is happening on Sunday August 21st from 10am. Hopefully this will become a regular thing if enough people come along. And may grow into something really special.
We had 5 or 6 stalls selling locally produced stuff (cakes, home-grown veg, plants, Tottenham Honey, homemade preserves, crafts, and the like), but we'd love to have more. Especially if you have an allotment or similar, and have a wheelbarrow or more of stuff you think you'd like to sell.
So, if you'd like to have a stall, you have good stuff to sell and are LOCAL please get in touch (Stalls are free).
Of course the shop will be open selling the best stuff of all… Books.
Come along. Tell your friends. Tell your friends to come along and to tell their friends to come along too.

Uniformed Youth Groups Stand up for London’s Communities

Following the violence and criminality witnessed on London’s streets last week, young people across various uniformed youth groups in London are standing up to challenge the image and perception this has created of youth, and remind communities of the positive contribution that most young people can, and do make to our city.

On Tuesday 16th and Wednesday 17th August 2011, members of the Volunteer Police Cadets, and other Uniformed Youth groups as part of YOU London and Youth United, will take to the streets and work with their communities to help repair some of the damage inflicted during the recent disturbances.

Young people in some of the worst affected boroughs, including Haringey, Lewisham, Hackney, Bromley, Croydon and Lambeth, will be visiting businesses and residents who have had their property damaged, to find out how they have been affected, and what more the police and uniformed youth groups can do to help reassure and rebuild their confidence and livelihoods.

For example, over the next two days, cadets in Haringey will be painting and decorating boarded up shop fronts on Tottenham High Road, creating a ‘Peace Wall’ as has been done in Peckham and Manchester, to help unite the community. They will also be visiting local care homes, handing out crime prevention advice to local residents. In Lambeth on Wednesday Morning, cadets will be distributing plants and planters donated by the local B&Q, to the worst affected and most vulnerable residents and business owners.

B&Q, ASDA and Waitrose are sponsoring this event by providing t.shirts, packed lunches and equipment for all young people involved.

YOU London is a unique partnership of the oldest, largest and most experienced uniformed youth organisations in the capital, from the Army Cadets to the Scouts and Volunteer Police Cadets.

Being a member of a uniformed youth group provides young people with the opportunity to develop their confidence and social skills within reasonable boundaries, achieve a sense of identity and respect in a safe environment, make friends, gain qualifications, and have unique experiences which will equip them to become capable, contributory and socially responsible members of their communities.

There are around 90,000 young volunteers who are members of uniformed youth organisations in London, and 1.25 million nationally as part of Youth United. Uniformed youth groups rely on adult volunteers to keep going. Across London this week young people will also be giving the public information on how they can volunteer to help run a uniformed youth group to provide similar opportunities for more young Londoners.

16 year-old Jamilla Walcott, a Crouch End resident, has been a Volunteer Police Cadet for 3 years, of the disturbances seen in Tottenham and across London, which she witnesses while visiting a relative in Croydon, she said: "I was shocked when I saw it on the news and I looked out of the window and saw the Reeves furniture store on fire. I don't think that  anything can justify what happened, people took advantage of a situation."

16 year-old Marie-Chantale Dable has lived on the Broad Water Farm Estate for seven years, she said: "I've been a Voluntary Police Cadet since I was 14 , before that I used to get myself into trouble. I applied to be a cadet myself to change things and I wanted to see things how officers see them, now I can see things both ways. I would like to be a police officer."

Safer Neighbourhoods Chief Inspector Sonia Davis (pictured with young people taking part in painting the hoardings) said: "It's genuinely heartwarming to see local young people working together to make the area better. They are showing an incredible level of enthusiasm and care and clearly share our commitment and determination to return Haringey to business as usual."

Additional officers continue to be out on the streets of the capital providing a highly visible presence, as our policing operation continues.

The number of officers out on the streets of London has been planned out on a daily basis after a thorough assessment of what intelligence and information is available to police and the forthcoming events across London.

Officers on duty are a mix of mutual aid, borough officers, public order-trained officers and specialist central units.
Deputy Assistant Commissioner Steve Kavanagh, said: "I know that there will be substantial interest in the number of officers that we have on duty over the coming days. I want Londoners to know that we will continue to have a very visible, hugely increased number of police officers out on our streets.

"We are out across London arresting those people who brought crime, disorder, fear and violence to out streets. We will relentlessly pursue them, as our communities deserve.

"Our additional officers, including those on mutual aid, are working to local borough senior officers. We're taking the opportunity of using our extra officers firstly to carry out arrests as part of Operation Withern and then to support local officers dealing with those crimes most affecting the communities where they are deployed."

We will continue to have a substantial police presence out on the streets of London during this week, and going forward with our plans under constant review.

Over the course of the weekend (13 and 14 August) approximately 16,000 police officers were on duty over a 24-hour period.

Subject: Crimewatch Special on TV this evening (Thursday) features London disorder

Dear Neighbourhood Watch coordinator

Tonight, Thursday 18 August, at 20:00hrs, there will be a BBC Crimewatch Special featuring the violence and disorder across London.

The Met have now charged more than 1,000 people in connection with last week's violence and disorder.

A total of 1,015 people have been charged with various offences out of the 1,781 arrests so far.

In total the Operation Withern investigation team includes around 500 officers. The enquiry is being led by the Homicide and Serious Crime Command with support from detectives, uniformed officers and police staff from across the MPS.

We estimate that we currently have around 20,000 hours of CCTV footage to view, although this is likely to increase as we gather further material from CCTV, the public and other sources. Over the weekend Operation Withern had 125 officers dedicated to going through CCTV.

One CCTV clip on the Crimewatch Special from approximately 22:20hrs on Monday, 8 August shows an innocent member of the public outside the Carphone Warehouse shop in Clapham Junction. The man tries to stop a large group of trouble makers from smashing the Carphone Warehouse shop window further but they attack him with a fire extinguisher spraying it directly in his face. Police would like to hear from the victim who is yet to be identified; they would also like to speak to anyone who witnessed the incident.

Forensic and crime scene examiners have been working on more than 1,100 crime scenes and more than 300 forensic submissions have already been made to labs.

The MPS is working closely with the CPS to ensure that cases are processed quickly. A large number of people have appeared in court and while some have already been convicted and received prison sentences many cases have been remanded to Crown Court.

Deputy Assistant Commissioner Stephen Kavanagh said:

"I want to thank all those people who have come forward with information already.

"What we need to do now is build on that sense of community that we have seen across the UK. There will be images and CCTV of incidents across London coming out.

"Please keep checking our Metropolitan Police Service Flickr page and your local papers to see if you can help us to identify those who were part of the disorder across London.

"It is with the public's support that we will make a real difference and continue to fill the courts with the people who shattered our communities on those nights."

There have been approx 7.8 million hits on the suspect images on our Flickr page. Please go to see if you recognise any of the wanted suspects.

http://www.flickr.com/photos/metropolitanpolice/sets/72157627267892973/

We continue to appeal for witnesses and information in relation to the disorder across London. Anyone with information relating to any aspect of the incident is asked to contact the Operation Withern incident room on 020 8345 4142; if you wish to remain anonymous contact Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.

Hello,
we had a busy week last week, including our comedy night on Friday, which was a fundraiser for those affected by the riots in Tottenham. I'm really pleased to be able to tell you that the night raised £442.52, which will be going to the Tottenham Fund this week.

Our local market on Sunday proved popular again, and this time we had some new stalls. One of the most popular was the cookie stall, which did a roaring trade.
Next month's Market day is on Sunday September 18th and it starts at 10.00am.

A quick reminder that we are doing songs and stories for the under 5's every Monday, Wednesday and Friday at 11am. It's Free and it's also a nice way to relax, so feel free to join us.

THIS WEEK

Thursday August 25th - 7.00pm-9.00pm
An evening with the Stranglers' Hugh Cornwell
Hugh Cornwell is one of the UK's finest song-writing talents and accomplished live performers. The original guitarist, singer and main songwriter in The Stranglers enjoyed massive UK and European success with ten hit albums and twenty-one top forty singles, etching himself into the UK's musical psyche with Peaches, No More Heroes, Golden Brown, Always the Sun, Grip, Nice N Sleazy, Duchess, Walk on By, Strange Little Girl and Skin Deep.

Cornwell has released eight solo albums, most recently Hooverdam.

Now Quartet Books are publishing Hugh's debut novel Window on the World, and he has kindly agreed to come to the Big Green Bookshop to read from it. This is a remarkable opportunity for literary and music fans alike as Hugh will talk about not just his debut novel and his recent autobiography but also his astonishing musical career, both with The Stranglers, and as a solo artist.
There will be a chance to ask Hugh questions and he'll also be signing copies of the book.
This is going to be an extremely popular event and despite it being FREE, to ensure a place in the audience, please get in touch with the shop letting them know you wish to attend. If you don't do this we cannot guarantee you a place.
If you're unable to make it on the night, but would like a signed copy of the book they will be available to pre-order here

Sunday September 4th 1.00pm-4.00pm
Knitting in the bookshop
So, it's the first Sunday of the month, which can only mean one thing. Knitting Day at the Big Green Bookshop.
It doesn't matter if you've never knitted before, or whether you are representing your country at the next knitting olympics, it's all about joining in really. Tea, coffee and biscuits (essential to avoid knitters elbow, i'm informed ), will be available, and it 's usually lots of fun.

For more information on all the rest of the events happening at the bookshop, please check out the website

I'm all by myself at the moment, so I hope you don't mind a slightly shorter newsletter than usual.

Take care and see you soon,
Simon

Subject: Haringey Borough Commander letter to community members

Haringey Borough Commander, Sandra Looby has written an open letter to Haringey community members following the recent disorder, expressing the commitment of local police to listen to the community and together forge forward to a safer Haringey:

Dear Haringey community member,
We have been working tirelessly with our partner agencies and local community groups in order to understand how we move forward following the unprecedented scenes of disorder experienced in Tottenham and across London.

The widespread looting and deliberate damage caused to businesses and homes was the worst seen for many years and the fact that people have lost their homes, possessions and livelihoods is a great sadness to us. We were aware of the community’s concerns following the shooting of Mark Duggan and were taking advice from community representatives; however we had no indication to suggest that Haringey would be subject to such extreme violence.

We have continued to engage with the wider community whilst the Independent Police Complaints Commission rightly carries out an independent investigation into the shooting of Mark Duggan and supports his family. We will continue to listen to the concerns of Mark’s family and the wider communities as the investigation continues.

These have been some of the most difficult and challenging times for our officers who have been incredibly brave in their actions to protect the community. Our determination to support and protect the community has not wavered. Your dedicated local Safer Neighbourhood team officers continue to patrol the streets of Haringey and to offer reassurance and support to those affected by the distressing events. Thank you for the overwhelming messages of support that have helped the morale of our officers and backroom staff.

Over the next month we are committed to attend a series of listening events across the borough, so that we may understand not only the impact of these terrible events, but also how we move forward as one community in Haringey.

We recognise that the vast majority of the community abhors the disorder that took place and have a deep regard for the area in which they live. We share with you those feelings and a determination to return Haringey to everyday life and business as soon as possible and to ensure those that harmed the community are brought to justice through the courts.

The operation to trace those responsible for the disorder and damage to our community and put them before the courts continues and we ask that if you have any information, or recognise any of the people in the photographs on the Met site www.met.police.uk/disordersuspects , to call the Operation Withern Major Investigation Team on 020 8345 4142 or call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.

We are determined to do all we can to build ever stronger community links and forge forward to a safer Haringey with the support of the community.

Yours sincerely,
Sandra Looby
Haringey Borough Commander

Hello and welcome to this weeks edition of the newsletter.

There's lots to look forward to this week, including visits by The Selecter's Pauline Black and also the brilliant historical novelist Karen Maitland as well as the start of our 3rd Annual Booker Prize Book Challenge. More details below.

In other news, a couple of weeks ago we had a tidy up day at the side of our shop. We're hoping to make it into an area that our customers can use to sit and read whilst enjoying a cup of tea or coffee, and we had a fantastic group of volunteers who turned up to help out. We're going to need to completely clear all the shale that's out there as there's loads of smashed glass mixed in with it now (not ideal for little ones), so we'll hopefully have another day soon when we can do this. Thanks to everyone who turned up to help.

Our new second hand book section is almost ready to be launched and as ever, we want to thank all of you who've donated your unwanted books to help us set this up. Just to remind you, we finally decided to introduce a secondhand books section in the bookshop which will initially be concentrating on fiction (crime, science fiction etc all fit into this bracket) and children’s books to compliment our present stock profile. Naturally, we will happily accept any donations that you have but will also consider buying books too. We prefer paperbacks, but will happily accept any books you'd like to give  us!
The section will be introduced slowly into the bookshop as the stock comes in, starting next week. We already have a great selection of titles to price and put on the shelves. And we had a lovely message from Times journalist David Aaranovitch, who's having a 'cull' of his overflowing bookshelves, and has kindly offered to let us have the books that he no longer wants to keep. This will certainly help get the section off the ground. This is a new venture and we only have a very limited budget to get this off the ground, but please get in touch with us if you have any questions.

And we're very sorry to have to let you know that our wonderful dependable Doctor Who obsessed work colleague Mark has left the employ of the Big Green Bookshop to become a teacher. We want to take this opportunity to say thanks to him and to wish him well in the future. It won't quite be the same without him.

Before we give you details of this week's events we thought we'd better just let you know to LOOK OUT FOR AN EXCITING EMAIL  (from us) ARRIVING THURSDAY OR FRIDAY!!

Tuesday September 6th  7.00pm-9.00pm

An Evening with The Selecter's Pauline Black

Pauline Black was a founder member of Selecter who were formed in 1979 and described as leaders of the ska revival movement with, The Specials and Madness.

Pauline will be at the shop to read from her book and talk about her extraordinary life. There will be a chance to ask Pauline questions and she'll also be signing copies of the book.

This is going to be an extremely popular event and despite it being FREE, to ensure a place in the audience, please get in touch with the shop letting them know you wish to attend. If you don't do this we cannot guarantee you a place.

If you're unable to make it on the night, but would like a signed copy of the book they will be available to pre-order.

Wednesday September 7th 11.00am. Songs and stories for the under 5's. All welcome

Thursday September 8th 7.00pm

Bestselling author Karen Maitland joins us

Author of the bestselling Company of Liars and The Owl Killers, historical fiction has rarely been more exciting in the capable hands of Karen Maitland.

Her latest novel The Gallows Curse continues this tradition;

Karen is also one of the co authors of the Medieval Murderers series of books and on the evening of her visit, Karen will be reading and talking about her passion of this fascinating period of history.

This is the second time Karen has been to the bookshop (we think her books are fantastic) and we hope you can make it.This is a FREE event and refreshments will be served.

Friday September 9th 11.00am. Songs and stories for the under 5's. All welcome

Friday September 9th  and concluding on Tuesday October 18th

The Booker Prize Book Challenge

The Man Booker Prize is probably regarded as the most prestigious literary award in the UK. The shortlist will be announced on Tuesday September 6th. This is 6 weeks before the winner is revealed to the watching millions on Tuesday October 18th. Last year, the winner was Howard Jacobson for The Finkler Question, and this year’s longlist includes some interesting titles. Well known authors like Julian Barnes and Alan Hollinghurst have made the list, but there are also four first time novelists on there. It remains to be seen whether they make it to the shortlist, but it’s refreshing to see.
And for the third year we’re going to be hosting a Booker Prize Book Club which is open to everyone. This is how it works
As soon as the shortlist is announced we’ll order copies of each of the books, which we’ll hopefully get by Friday September 9th. People who want to be part of the challenge can come in any time after this date to pick up one or more of the Booker shortlist.
Over the next five or so weeks the members of the Book Club will make a concerted effort to read as many of the six shortlisted books as they can.
The group will meet on the evening of October 18th, the evening the winner is announced to discuss each of the books. After a heated debate, and a glass or two of vino, the group will vote for whom they think should win. We’ll then watch the televised ceremony, and hopefully cheer as our choice and the actual winner is one and the same. Or more likely, shout and curse as our least favourite book takes the glory.
We realise that the cost of the shortlist is likely to be in the region of £80-£90 and we don’t expect you to pay this much for books that you might otherwise not buy. So we’ve come up with a few solutions;

•For a one off payment of £25, we will be a lending library, where you can borrow each of the books for a week each. You can also keep your favourite book after the ceremony.
•We will offer a discount of 20% on the shortlist for Book Group members.
•A group of you could share the cost, so for example 3 of you could buy 2 books each.

However you decide to do this, we will do everything we can to make the books accessible to you. The important thing is that you're able to join in.
It's a bit of a challenge, but if you think you're up for it, come along

please check out our website for details of all the other stuff were up to. Here's the link http://www.biggreenbookshop.com/

See you soon,
