VILLON’S WIFE: The Dandelion & the Cherry BY INVITATION ONLY
NEGISHI Kichitaro | Japan | 2009 | 114 mins

From a novel by DAZAI Osamu (1909 – 1948), this is the love story of Otani, a
man who is constantly unfaithful and drinks away all his money and more, but
also a novelist of talent and a strange appeal that makes him impossible to
hate; and his wife Sachi, always cheerful and accommodating even as he tramples
all over her.
The story is set in the period of upheaval immediately following World War II.
In a time when it was difficult to be optimistic about the country’s future, its
men were struggling to respond to a sudden shift in values and the crumbling of
moral strictures. The women, on the other hand, were trying amidst this
confusion to be strong, and to keep their eyes on the future.
Why does Sachi continue to love the prodigal Otani?

CRAZY THUNDER ROAD
ISHII Sogo| Japan | 1980 | 90 mins

Originally completed by 20-year old punk musician Ishii for his university
graduation, this is a film expressing the energy of the anarchic bikers,
bosozoku, through a chaotic, manga-infulenced film style composed of boisterous
music, hand-held cameras, rough editing and abrupt narrative transitions.
In the city of Thunder Road, the police have been pressuring the motorcycle
gangs to turn peaceful. Ken, the head of the Maboroshi gang, is keen to disband
and settle down with his girlfriend, Noriko – the young pretender, Jin, on the
other hand has different ideas.
Crazy Thunder Road illustrates the rebellious indie spirit of the first
generation of young film directors to emerge after the end of the Japanese
studio system.

RAIL TRUCK
KAWAGUCHI Hirofumi: Japan | 2010 | 116 mins

Yano Yumiko, with sons Atsushi and Toki, travels from her home in Tokyo carrying
the ashes of her late husband to his parents’ home, a mountain village in the
south of Taiwan. Having been raised in the big city, the boys are wide-eyed at
the beautiful countryside… and waiting for them is a kindly Taiwanese
grandfather who speaks Japanese. He helps Atsushi to locate the rail truck from
an old photograph Atsushi’s father gave his son.
Rail Truck, adapted from a novel by the famed writer Akutagawa Ryunosuke, is a
human drama that turns on the two universal themes of a boy taking his first
steps toward adulthood, and the revitalization of a family on the verge of
collapse.

GOOD MORNING TO THE WORLD
HIROHARA Satoru | Japan | 2010 | 81 mins

Takahashi Yuta is at high school. He is one of the quieter students in his class
and his friendships are awkward. Although his mother and father are hardly
around, his world is rather dull, consisting simply of travelling back and forth
between home and school. One day, out of idle curiosity, he steals a bag from a
man on the street, however the next day finds the same man dead. Using the
contents of the bag as clues, Yuta embarks on a journey to find the dead
stranger's family, a journey that also teaches him the ways of the adult world,
far away from the juvenile antics of his teenage classmates.

THE CHEF OF THE SOUTH POLE
OKITA Shuichi | Japan | 2009 | 125 mins

The Chef of South Polar, as this film is also known, is based on the
autobiographical essays of coast-guard chef Nishimura Jun who delivers
mouth-watering and extravagant dishes for an eight-man team at the Dome Fuji
Station, a Japanese research outpost in the South Pole, for a year. Think foie
gras, lobster, Matsuzaka beef, ramen and onigiri… this is a delicious off-beat
comedy filled with food, ice and laughter.
The film is not about what the chef can or cannot cook at -54°C. It is about the
impact of his efforts on the group, on the role of food in the community and a
sense of home. Isolated from their families and the world, the idiosyncrasies of
each of the all-male crew intensify and threaten to de-stabilise their fragile
co-existence but extremes are tempered as the men eat together, work together,
and later even learn to cook together.

Voces de la Palabra (Voices of the Word) is an experimental play in which prose
texts have been adapted for the theatre with live music.

The play draws on the influences of Miguel de Cervantes' 'Don Quixote' to
explore the relationship between Spain and Latin America, an association
characterised by the often-contradictory aspects of love, passion, ambition,
conquest and war.

Voces de la Palabra was first performed in 2007 at the Instituto Cervantes in
London. It later played to full houses at the Bolivar Hall (the Bolivarian
Republic of Venezuela's Embassy), and will be staged again at Bolivar Hall in
November and December 2010.

Tierra Theatre Company, a group of London-based actors from Latin America
(Argentina, Colombia, Venezuela) and Spain will perform the play in Spanish with
English surtitles. The play is written and directed by London-based Argentine
German D'Alessandro, who founded the Tierra Theatre in 2007.

The play is part of the GLA's efforts to mark this year's Latin American
Independence Bicentenary, which has included a reception, a photographic
exhibition, support for a website and other commemoration resources.

SYNOPSIS

Surgeon Astley Cooper declared in 1828 that `he must mangle the living, if he
has not operated on the dead' but today the opportunity for medical students and
trainees to do gross anatomical dissection is becoming increasingly rare.
Concerned by this, New Zealand doctor Paul Trotman created a film featuring both
body donors and the medical students who later worked on their cadavers.
Highlighting the importance of this most generous final act, the film also shows
the experiences of the students as they undertake this often overwhelming stage
in their training.

Following the film there will be a Q&A with Paul Trotman

More About :A Flea in her Ear

Synopsis

Richard Eyre directs A Flea in Her Ear, a high speed comedy of errors starring
Tom Hollander.
Eccentric and hilarious, Georges Feydeau's much loved comedy mixes madness,
mayhem, fun and frivolity.

When the beautiful wife of Victor Chandebise suspects him of having an affair,
she enlists the help of her dearest friend to entrap him. Their plan to entice
him to a rendezvous at the Hotel Coq d'Or spectacularly misfires and chaos
ensues.

Set in the decadent surroundings of Belle Epoque Paris, Feydeau's quintessential
farce promises to be an exhilarating evening of mistaken identities and comic
disaster.

I have two free film tickets for 'Client 9' tomorrow
afternoon:

When:Tomorrow Tuesday 8th February

Time:12 noon

Where: The Everyman Cinema Club, 5 Holly Bush Vale,
Hampstead,
London NW3

More about the Film

On Tuesday 8th February at 12 noon, we will be joined by Oscar-winning Alex
Gibney for a screening of 'The Client'.

Sex and lies, power and passion, high ideals and sweet revenge all collide in
comic and tragic ways in Alex Gibney's info-taining new CLIENT 9 – a gripping,
revelatory, blow-by-blow portrait of an extraordinary American scandal that
brought down a man who was widely considered a future presidential candidate.

At the heart of CLIENT 9 is an incredible true story that plays like a 21st
century Greek tragedy: Eliot Spitzer, a crime-busting district attorney, rises
to become New York's governor, fuelled by genius and ambition, and then loses it
all when he's exposed – amazingly, incredibly – as a regular client of an escort
agency.

He'd been one of the most powerful men in America: a relentless, swaggeringly
tough crusader who wanted to change the way society worked.

Long before the global financial meltdown, he was hell-bent on exposing the
reckless crimes of well-heeled Wall Street bankers who were operating outside of
any sense of moral obligation or regulatory control.

After the screening, audience members will have the chance to discuss the film
with Nick Moran in a Q&A hosted by journalist Amanda Palmer.

Tickets will be emailed across to you.
