| So here is the info gathered from the get together at the Sandbar – with a vegan cheesecake to take the edge off! Its firly long but as it took me a fair bit of time to write I would appreciate that people try to read it Thanks Adele Those Present People dipped in and out through out the evening due to other commitments and we co-opted two people, as they were friends already there But below are those who contributed time and ideas Adele Andrew Agnes Jess Paddy Agata Jane Luke Issues discussed The mailing list There have been a number of people generally chatting on the list, which has caused some interesting debate as to what the list is for There was suggestions to Split the mailing list into separate lists i.e. event info, general chatter, useful info How ever this could potentially 1 a lot of work for those setting it up and managing this 2 who diffuse the group and create segmentation of the useful info 3 create multiple info mailing lists, thus potentially tripling the email traffic 4 Create a whole lot of diffusion and confusion It was however discussed that we as a group become more vigilant as to how we use the list I.e. do not use the list just to say hello to individuals! But use it for useful Permaculture, environmental and events info and discussion. And if you go off topic use the subject heading to do so informing others on the list what the email is about We will try to look at the mailing list becoming a forum or chat solution on the website to create topics of discussion that can also then be traced and archived those threads of interest. People were of the opinion that there may be a number of people on the mailing list who signed up JUST wanting info and not a discussion. The mailing list was a good place for interesting tips and discussion however and most liked the informal nature of it. If was thought a great shame if people shared information personally that would not then be available to all those on the list. However it was understood that ten emails with individuals thanking each other was not the best use of the list. Therefore please make an attempt to self police this list and use the subject to direct topics for now It was proposed that website was the better place for those who wanted passive information delivery type of involvement An unsubscribe feature should be added to the yahoo group mailing list and although we would not encourage people to leave the list, if they were only interested in finding out when events were, then this could be an option rather than be annoyed but receiving discussion emails and of course we should make every effort to keep the website as up to date as possible and then encourage people to check and update on the website themselves too ___________________________________________________________________________ On the website we unfortunately could not fit in a discussion about another website workshop, but did list workshops up until Feb so maybe March 2010 unless anyone would like to ad an extra session in? ___________________________________________________________________________ Sooooo Whoahoa ………. He is interested in people who would like to assist in this project and learn more in the process and the project will culminate in a visit to the project in Jan 2010 ___________________________________________________________________________ Middlewood visit feedback Luke an Jane showed the group photos and Adele explained some of the activities A disk of which will be handed over to the network so if any one has some time to upload to the website in the next few weeks – great! ________________________________________________________________________ News Jane and Luke are leaving us to set up a Permaculture project on Jane’s family’s dairy farm in Ireland and would welcome inquiries and visits from interested Permaculture experts and enthusiasts Julie has now edited the video that she and rob made about the MPN summer solstice herbal day at Birchfields forest garden and this should be appearing on the website soon!! _________________________________________________________________ MPN Constitution Unfortunately no one from the constitution group could attend so no decisions could be made on this topic Some questions were raised as to the network’s capacity to facilitate a formalised structure, funding and accounting responsibilities at this time or whether it would be more feasible to raise funds through the national network or take up the offer from other Manchester based organisations in this respect. What are the funds that people are thinking of raising for specifically? The nature of the need should then determine the method of satisfying that need, within the resources available to us at this point in time. The constitution group should continue to work on this and feed the information back at the next event or at the next update event. _______________________________________________________________________ Permaculture Design Course At Middlewood an idea was proposed that Leaf St could benefit from a Re Design and this could be written up in the LAND Permaculture demonstration site funding round? As the project is 10 years old this year and has seen the benefit/ of a transient community of workers and access to it over these years could it be re designed with all this added knowledge of use, environment and community capacity. It seems that although the locals would like it to continue to have food grown there they feel that without a dedicated worker this is not feasible could a redesign prove other wise? If anyone is interested in this idea please let me (Adele) know by email _______________________________________________________________________ MORE on Birley fields development with MMU – I will be posting this out separately too to the network to gather support for local presence to be solicited for these meetings This is a forwarded email written by a friend of a friend I have just been to a *'consultation' about the birley fields/ mmu development *at hulme community garden centre. We were the only 2 members of the community present with about 7 reps from the council/mmu. They clearly expected a big turnout of opposition so were pleasantly surprised that it was only us (and were keen to tell us that public response has been overwhelmingly positive, especially in asda!) It was quite intimidating and felt very tokenistic. *There are 4 more 'consultations' and the option to email Objections/feedback to the council. Please attend and/or spread the word as apparently the proposal is still "subject to the outcome of public consultation".* It may not feel like that and it was certainly unclear who was from the council and who from the university (they seem to have merged into 1) but it may be at least worth registering objections with the council. These are: Sat July 25th Hulme library 9:30-11:30am Mon July 27th Windrush millenium centre 12-2 pm Weds July 29th GreenHeys lane mosque 7-9pm Thurs July 30th New Hope fellowship tatton st 12:30-2:30 Or fill out questionnaire give feedback online at www.mmu.ac.uk/hulme <http://www.mmu.ac.uk/hulme> We did manage to establish that part of the development includes a new 400 space multistorey car park built on a current greenspace and as yet they have no plans to conserve the wildflower meadow that makes up Birley Fields as is. They are considering leaving it that way. At present the fields are a green space in the heart of Hulme. They have grown into a eco system over many years providing habitats for bees, butterflies a wide variety of wildflowers as well as trees in various stages of maturity. It is worth knowing that the Friends of Birley Fields have mapped the land and made other proposals to the council to make it an active community space while preserving the nature that is already thriving there.
