Can you help Ken from OZ find this House, maybe 49 Main St Mickletown.
Dear Graham
I am researching my family history and have discovered that my great
grandfather George Wilson resided in Methley and the 1851 British
Census has him and his familly risiding in Mickletown Street or Road
and I think the schedule number was 49, page unknown. Perusal of the
1861 census indicate that the family was still living in the same
house. I imagine this number 49 refers only to a census number and
not a postal number.
I shall most probably be in England for late December and early
January and am interested in visiting Methley. However my visit would
depend on whether or not I can possible identify the house in
question as I would not wish on arrival to find that Mickletown Road
or Street has been swept aside for a motorway.
Could you possible help me in any way with some relative information?

Could anyone please help me with some information on the Stockdale
family? I am doing my family history, and my cousin in Australia has
sent me the names. We are trying to get information on my cousin Ann
(or Patricia) Craven. The associated names are Gerald Stockdale,

I remember a garage being built on Woodrow Hill, in front of the
allotments. Is this what you are calling Mulberry Gardens? The
mulberry path went behind the bottom section of the Hollings, under
the railway bridge, and down to Mickie, passing close to the pit
yard.The garage was built and owned, initially I believe, by Arthur
Marsh,who had some sort of transport business up the lane at the
side of Dr Dennis's surgery, can't recall the name of the lane, but
Parsonage something or other comes to mind. I don't know if Frank
Cooper of Oulton was connected with it at some stage. You must be
quite a young sprog if you don't remember the area before the
garage. Also, you mentioned going to the doctor's in the 70's. I can
remember going in the 1940's when Dr Eric William Lonsdale White was
the medic. He was later joined by Dr Woofenden.

I am an active member of the Pontefract FHS and we have quite a few
members interested in Methley, with ancestors from that area. Myself
being descended from William Hartley of Oulton, who married in
Methley in 1735.
We have had a request which I am hoping someone can answer.
Do the Grave registers for St Oswalds survive? And if so does anyone
know where they are, presumably they may have been deposited in the
West Yorkshire Archives, Leeds Division.
These are not the Church Burial registers that they are looking for,
but the register that shows who was buried in which grave as some
headstones have not always been inscribed with the full occupants
names.
If they do survive our MI's co-ordinators would be interested in
transcribing and indexing them for future use.

I am working on the Family History of the Smirthwaite Family
originally of Hazel House, Watergate, but later of Park Farm. The
family have an Oil painting that is of The Dairy House, they always
thought it was Park Farm and I am trying to find out if Home Farm
was once called Park Farm.

Well in reply to this comment Mr Crowley, I'd have thought they could
put an extra Dr on at Methley to cope with the demands of the ever
increasing population of Methley, instead of trying to share between
different sites, but I think patients come second to the mighty pound
sign!

I hear what you're saying!
I think everybody has experienced something similar at the surgery at
some point!
There are things that wind us all up (Receptionists being down-right
rude at times), but did you know that the Doctors also work at the
other 2 sites (Castleford and Airedale)?
This may well offer a case as to why there are so many rooms and not
enough Dr's...
Also I have found every single GP to be fantastic and reassuring with
both my wife and I...never rude, even if a little over-worked with
the huge increase of patients in Methley - One resident I know
reckons that Methley has doubled in terms of population.

only you and maybe a couple of other people in there?
Now if your ill it's like pulling teeth when you ring the surgery,
and god forbid if you ring on Monday morning!!!! You ring a minute
after they open and all the appointments have gone!!!!

Does anyone remember when The Orchards wasn't a posh cul-de-sac,but
an actual Orchard?
The Orchard was acually split into two sections and split by a high
hedge, which did have a couple of spaces to sqeeze through.
The first section had all Apple trees in it with the exception of the
holy grail (Plum Tree) and the second section was scatted with Pear
Trees.
I'm not sure who owed the Orchards but the fruit was left to drop and
rot.
Apart from being a great den of a child in the seventies there was
food on tap. There was also a Pigstye that was usually empty and made
a great viewing point to watch the trains go by. The only other
distraction was an old jobsworth guy who would occasionally walk into
the Orchards from his house on Little Church Lane to inform you he
was reporting you to the owners for eating the fruit that was clearly
left to drop from the trees.
Also at the top of Little Church Lane lived Mrs Firth who had her
granson regularly visit her for weeks at a time and he would join in
the fun. One particular year stands out as she organised a massive
bonfire in the Pear Orchard on November the 5th and put on a lovely
spread in her house. Of course that was in a time when most family's
had their own bonfires.
Every time I pass The Orchards I'm taken back to the early to mid
seventies when it was filled with tree's.

I don't know about the Appleyards owning the Cedars. Before the Cravens owned
it, the Embletons lived there. The house was divided into three lots of
accommodation, and my Great Uncle Herbert Craven lived in the largest section,
his son Harold lived in another bit, and my Grandpa Ernest Craven lived in the
last section. I remember the Tates lived in part of it after the Cravens, but as
all the older members of my family are now dead and gone (boo-hoo!) things have
to rely on the memory of myself and my younger sister. I was born when the horse
was still an eohippus, so dragging things to the fore is getting much harder.

I think you are on the right track Joan but I think this Spy is from
the outer edges or the black forest with a nickname like Stozz-

Yes Stozzwalds its funny you should say that as at 4.40pm going
towards the Mexbourgh from the Parkin Farm down the hill at where the
Schooly Hill Chapel use to be tonight a deer ran south in front of me
and my daughter just missing the front of my car from the north wood
to the south wood and about two month earlier the exact same spot
going in the same direction the same happened but it had to jump over
the right hand side of my bone that time, luckily it never contacted
but just their its blind from the trees but I noticed the owner of
that wood has cut the rough long grass so drivers can see them coming
threw but even so they comes threw that fast a driver has no chance
to stop.
It defiantly needs signs up at that point especially going east.
Also there is a link on all pages of the

Church magazine twice and I have stuck up notices in all pubs in the
village and it is listed on the Oulton and the Rothwell forum groups
and I do tell everyone about it but it appears methley folk in
general do not have computers. :-) or let them prove me wrong.
I use to add things to the calendar to auto post out but that got no
response, all these forum tools can be used by all members, but not
one member has entered a photo. :-D

Driving down Park Lane the other day and out pops a deer from the

The site would be more popular if people knew it existed, I only
found it by chance.
There should be a link to it at the Methley Village site, Maybe a
mention of it by the new computer in the Library.
Maybe a poster in the public places in the village, ie pubs,Doctors
waiting room, local shops etc.

As a member of one of Methley's oldest families, I have joined your
group. I have a collection of old photo's, my dad was into
photography some I have posted, others I will post later.
My grandparents lived in Greenfield Terrace, Ernest & Edith
Bucktrout, my father Eric and aunty Betty were both born there and
for a time I lived down the low end. Like my father and aunty Betty,
I also went to Mickletown School, leaving in 1957 to go to Whitwood
Technical School. My father married Lillian Ward and her sister
Nellie married Fred Teal. The Teal's lived at 170 Lower Mickletown,
Methley where Dennis, Kenneth and Raymond Teal were born.
I myself am now disabled and not able to travel, but will try to
answer any questions about my family or Methley.

Hello All,
I am a new member to this group, but I would just like to say how
much my sister and I enjoyed our visit to the History group this
morning. We are ex-Methley girls, our grandmother kept the Church
Side Post Office for years, Mrs. Whittington was her name. Our mum
was Marjorie, her eldest daughter. My paternal grandparents lived at
