A SCHOOL
FOR JOYFUL LEARNING
Experience with Nonviolent Communication in school
Marianne Göthlin started a school in 1998 based on the principles of Nonviolent Communication (NVC) in
Marianne Göthlin will share about their most important experiences and learning from building a school from an empathic attitude. Here pupils study from willingness and inner motivation, with a very high degree of inclusion and without punishment and rewards.
Marianne Göthlin says:
We were wishing our students to feel as enthusiastic about learning when they leave school after nine years, as they were their first day in school. Too many children seem to loose their natural joy of learning the way we traditional organize the work in schools. Now after nine years we celebrate the results of our intention and efforts.
In the national evaluation from the ministry of education this is some of what is pointed out as a result:
• Students feel safe, accepted as they are and connected to their joy of learning.
• Students learn from inner motivation and take responsibility for their learning.
• Students learn more in all subjects and also to co-operate.
• We have created a safe and creative learning environment.
• Students learn about democracy in practice.
• No signs of violation in the school.
Marianne will give many examples from the daily work implementing NVC with teachers, students and parents to work towards their vision. She will also point out the key-differences in NVC and traditional schooling that have supported this rewarding school development.

Workshop 2nd - 4th of May 2008
Nonviolent Communication
in schools and kindergartens
“Imagine a school where students are as enthusiastic to explore and learn when they leave after nine years as they were the very first school day.”
This workshop offers an opportunity for everybody working actively in education, or being interested in children’s development, to increase your communication skills and to contribute to joyful learning.
For three days we will practice communication that supports cooperation and get inspiration and clarity on how we can enrich our work in schools and kindergartens from nonviolent values and the NVC model.
We will share from our experience on how to create a safe and creative learning environment from an empathic attitude, with a real sense of inclusion, where children learn and work from willingness and where there is no punishment and rewards.
The aim with the training is for participants to:
• Understand how NVC principles and model can guide us to live basic human values as autonomy, mutual respect, equality, inclusion in daily life with children.
• Practice how to implement NVC in daily school and kindergarten life – for example in meetings, when making rules and when handling conflicts.
• Be able to contribute to development based on dialogue and cooperation supported by NVC skills.
Participants will practice:
• to express honesty, put a clear line around what you are willing to accept.
• empathic understanding in different conversations.
• to demonstrate democratic values through communication.
• communication that supports inner motivation.
• to express criticism and appreciation in ways that contributes to self confidence.
• to mediate between children and be a model for them in dealing with conflicts.
• to handle anger.
