I'm the dad of one of your PCC members. (No, I'm not discusted with this new DBs group,) I like to see young guys let off steam and ignore the controlling conventional niceties that people are exposed to these days. Just do your own thing, and the more outrageous the better!

I take it that this a tongue in cheek thing, and that you guys are actually as clean as they cum. Good luck with your project, and I guess eventually some truth and enlightenment will come out of it.

By the way, I'm planning to start a group called "Lets start a revolution." If anyone's interested I'd be happy to give my thoughts on this, and would welcome any suggestions before I launch it.

I'm a bit disapointed to see this group is not as active as it used to be. I'd love to see more stories from bike builders, and hear their view on anything.

Ron

What is the best way to learn something? For my money, it's hard to
beat the "just do it" method, which may land you in hot water once in
a while. So be it.

The following are some basic shop practices for newcomers. The
information is also about avoiding blunders. Not all mistakes in a
machine shop are of the dimensional type. Blowing chips on the guy
next to you is an example of a nondimensional mistake. By learning
some of these basics, newcomers will be in a better position to work
independently and with other shop personnel.

- Avoid using the support table of a disc sander to deburr thin plates.

I've worked with two people who severely ground down their thumbs
trying to deburr the edges of a thin plate in a disc sander. As they
were sanding an edge, the plate got sucked into the small opening
between the table and the disc, which pulled the plate and their
thumbs into the disc. If you are going to deburr a plate with a disc
sander, make sure you hold the plate above the support table.

- Understand nominal sizes.

Nominal sizes are convenient labels used to discuss part sizes that,
in reality, nobody will ever hit. However slight, there is always some
tolerance or error in every machined part. People sometimes say, "Just
shoot for the nominal." That means if the nominal size you're working
to is 1/2", then you need to do your best, within reason, to machine
the part to 1/2", taking into account the type of machining process
being used. You wouldn't be expected to hold 1/2" nominal size as
closely with a milling machine as you would with a surface grinder.

- Know the difference between 'absolute' and 'incremental' ...

"Knurling Made Simple" (preview)

Knurled surfaces are commonly seen on cylindrical parts such as
handles, knobs and rollers. Knurling is a process that creates a
pleasing, easy-to-grip geometric pattern on a part's surface.

When knurling, machinists apply a tool with two freely rotating
rollers that deform, or push, the material rather than cut it.
Creating a crisp, clean knurl on a lathe is easy if you follow these
suggestions.

‧ Understand the relationship between a knurling tool and the diameter
of the part to be knurled.

Some machinists get into trouble when they try to start a knurl over
an arbitrary diameter and find that the knurl doesn't track properly
by repeating itself in the previously laid grooves.

A proper diameter to knurl is any diameter that is a multiple of the
spacing, or distance, between the teeth of a knurling tool divided by
π (3.14159). The relationship is the same whether the knurl is diamond
or a straight knurl. However, you must measure the spacing of a
diamond knurl's teeth along the axis of the part or roller for the
relationship to hold true.

Suppose you want to impress a diamond knurl on a 1"-dia. shaft and the
distance between each tooth of the knurling tool measured, with
calipers, along the roller's axis is 0.060". The measurement is not
extremely critical in that ultimately you will determine the final
diameter by trial and error. However, the measurement will give you a
decent starting point.

Following the formula stated previously, 0.060 divided by 3.14159 is
0.019. Therefore, any multiple of 0.019 should provide a diameter for
a perfect knurl. For example, 0.019 times an arbitrary number such as
40 equals 0.760. In theory, then, if you turned a shaft to 0.760", you
should be able to create a perfect knurl.

However, because you want to knurl a 1"-dia. shaft, you have to find a
multiple of 0.019 that gets you close to 1", such as 52 ( 0.019 × 52 =
0.988). Based on experience, though, the chances of producing a
perfect knurl on the 0.988"-dia. shaft are not great. An error occurs
as a result of an imperfect measurement between the teeth of the
knurling tool, which isn't a big deal because ultimately you are going
to sneak up on a usable diameter. Therefore, begin by machining the
part about 0.010" larger than the calculated diameter.

‧ Lay a short test knurl by hand. ...

Hey man!Nice bikes!I built my own chopper this past year out of scrap tubing,in my friend's garage. The frame took all of about two months to complete(because I was using scrap tubing). There weren't many places to buy chop frames,or parts for that matter,so I had to make due with what ever I could.I built the rest of it from scratch,or refurbished old bike parts.I just finnished upgading the forks, and built a new light setup for it,with the "old school" in mind. You can see pics of it(pics of the upgrades will be up this afternoon)on my "other" clubsite www.dragsterbikes.com. My girlfriend wants me to build her one now,so I'll definately be on the market for some parts at least.Anyway, I dig the bikes man,and thanks for the e-mail.Choppers rule. ---Chops 2.---

The wheel which I found in a field full of sheep on Christmas day is
a Fox 5 spoke alloy wheel with a Uniroyal 195/50 15" tyre on it. It
has balance weights on it so I think it was a right front wheel off a
small Vauxhall by the 4 stud 100mm PCD pattern. I sent of for the
custom fasteners catalogue, its free if you Email them. They sell
motorbike stuff for choppers as well as the BSCY British Standard
Cycle thread that bicycles and old brit motorbikes use. The axle
will cost me about £8 with the postage costs but this is stainless
steel. They do sell threaded rod in 12" lengths still. I think its
the 3/8" BSCY 12" threaded rod I need to fit into the wheel bearing
cones on a back hub. They also sell 5/16" which I believe is the
size for front hubs on old bikes like Choppers and racers. I may
change this design to use a threaded rod from Screwfix catalogue as
they have 8mm and 10mm rod for 50p a foot, This wouldnt fit in
bearing cones but I could use industrial Annular bearings that I have
with spacers.
I was going to build a 2 wheel bike with the wheel but the square
shape of the tyre would mean that the steering would be rubbish and a
motorbike tyre that size would be a lot of money. So I have plans
for a Morgan style trike. The back wheel would have a freewheel
block on as normal with a BB shell in front of it. The BB would have
cranks on it but connected by a rod to a treadle like on a Singer
sewing machine. Then there would be a beam axle in front with a pair
of 16" Raleigh mags. I was thinking of making this with a wooden
frame with alloy panels like the old sports cars were as my weldings
rubbish.

What are the dimentions? You know, the thread pattern, width, length, type of metal.I'd like to see how this turns out,so let me know what they are,and I'll see what I can do.

I am going to make a creation with a car alloy wheel. The wheel will
need a wide hub made up, but thats no problem as cheap steel hubs are
made of bits pushed together. So I would just change the centre
section and make a flange to mount the wheel.

The problem is the axle. As the tyre is a 195/50 15", thats 8"
wide. Bike axles are only about 6". I got a length of studding from
a motor bike catalogue called Custom Fasteners a while ago. They
were selling 12" lengths then, I cut it in 2 for my MTB wheels. But
now they only seem to sell upto 8" long studs. Does anyone know
anyone else that sells bike axle BSCY studs or threaded rod as its
known?
