Beginning September 1, 2006
POSITION: Middle East Scholar in Ethnomusicology
RANK & SALARY: Assistant Professor; tenure-track; rank and salary commensurate with qualifications and experience
QUALIFICATIONS: A Ph.D. in a relevant field, evidence of potential for excellence in research and success in teaching.
RESPONSIBILITIES: The University of Texas at Austin School of Music's Division of Musicology and Ethnomusicology seeks a scholar with demonstrable potential to contribute to issues that are of central concern in ethnomusicology. Successful candidates will have a research specialization that complements those of our current faculty. Candidates should demonstrate a facility with the cultural analysis of music and the ability to teach courses within current program parameters while bringing additional expertise that will allow us to expand our curricular offerings. We are especially interested in scholars who specialize in Middle Eastern traditions;
the successful candidate will be offered a joint appointment with the Department of Middle Eastern Studies. Other qualifications could include expertise in a topical area (e.g., music and cognition, embodiment and memory; music and communication) and/or performance experience, including directing music ensembles other than those of Western art music. Responsibilities of the position begin September 1, 2006, and include active research and publication; teaching courses for non-majors, undergraduate majors, and special-topic graduate seminars; service on graduate committees; supervision of Master's reports, Ph.D. dissertations, and D.M.A. treatises; and may include ensemble coordination, as appropriate. This faculty position is tenure-track, pending final funding approval. Security sensitive position; background check conducted on applicant selected.
