Dear Friends,
I'm currently researching into the history and current state of jazz music in Iran/Iranian jazz musicians and would be grateful for any information/thoughts on the following questions.
1. When did jazz first arrive in Iran? Were there Iranian jazz groups before 1979? Who were the musicians?
2. To what extent is there awareness in Iran of jazz's roots as a form of African-American music? Is it regarded as a form of 'black' music? Or has it been detached from issues of 'race'?
3. My perception is that there have been fewer restrictions on jazz since the revolution compared with other forms of western popular music. For example, I remember seeing many CDs of western jazz musicians on sale during my last visit to Iran in 2004, even though a lot of western popular music still isn't allowed. What could be the reasons for this? Is it because the government doesn't think of jazz as being a form of 'popular' music?
Any thoughts on these questions or other comments concerning jazz in Iran/Iranian jazz would be much appreciated.
Many thanks,
Laudan.
