Dear Reader,
can anyone please advise me on the quality and construction on the
tombak:
my friend bought a tombak from iran with a rim thickness of 10mm.
since then he has heard that a 'professional' tombak has a end-rim
thickness [which the skin sits upon] of 2mm.
he thinks he has bought a poor quality tombak and the 10mm. effects
the sound, he paid roughly 500euro.
would the thickness of the rim effect the quality of sound? the
pleng, tom etc. sounds?
are there different school of construction of tombak? [the 2mm.
tombak was of the Terhani school]?
in its history was their a difference of rim differences, or is this
2mm. thickness a modern construction/innovation.
my friend is not a professional player but he has a great love and
interest in the tombak and daf. he is after a particular sound and
the question arises is it just a matter of his playing technique or
the construction of the instrument?
any help/advice would be welcome.
thank u
kevin and Jamil
