The titan of traditional Iranian music Mohammadreza Shajarian is due to wow the crowds in Europe this month as he embarks on a European tour. The master will be accompanied by his son Homayun along with tar player Majid Derakhshani, kamancheh player Saeid Farajpuri, and lutenist Mohammad Firuzi. The month-long concert will open on April 29 in London and will move to Oslo, Stockholm, Gutenberg, Amsterdam, Frankfurt, Cologne, and Berlin. He received UNESCO's Mozart Medal last January in Paris after staging a concert to commemorate Iranian mystic poet Rumi. The 67-year-old Shajarian began his singing career in 1959 and rose to fame in the 1960s with his distinct style of singing. He has been performing regularly in Iran and throughout the world. His performances have brought him universal acclaim. NO/SF/KB |

In its authentic form, classical Persian music is an improvisational art, based on ancient maqams and complex rhythmic structures that have survived the test of time. Today's performances of classical Persian music are predominantly made up of both pre-composed and improvised elements and use contemporary as well as classical poetry. While deeply rooted in the traditions and teachings of many generations of master musicians, this music is nevertheless a truly dynamic tradition which, in parallel with classical Persian poetry, possesses the magical quality of defying the dimension of time and depicting the present.Performances of Ustad Shajarian with various ensembles of master musicians are probably the most vivid manifestation of this special quality of Persian music.Admission
