I always believed that a music teacher should pass on something beyond just the notes; he should teach life, as I think music is something that breathes the very essence of life itself.
to my utter shame I failed to complete or to continue I should say my music lessons with you but what I learnt from you in every class, with every note we played and with every kind word you always had to say, will stay with me for the rest of my life for which I am truly thankful.

If Arash is to be selected then I have no doubt in my mind you hold him in high esteem and he will be rewarded accordingly due to the credits of his own character but I will only hope that he is every bit as deserving as you are.

Many many thanks for allowing me the opportunity to know and learn from you.

All the best

Baharan

Dear friends,
It is a problem that we re-write our old history and sometimes old stories without any mint data instead of searching in our music history.
There are some points and I 'd like to know your point of view about them:
1- At least there are 2 photos of young Darvish who is playing Tar for Azizossoltan "Malijak".
2- Darvish & Pishdaramad: There are recordings by Agha Hosseingholi in Tehran-1906 and Pishdaramad has mentioned on label and this is before reaching Darviash to peak of his artistic life.
3- A complete discography of Darvish khan: He has recorded in Tehran-1906 and in London-1909 and in Tiflis-1914 about 100 tracks, some of them solos.
4- Darvish khan after 1915 and his last 5 years.
5- Story of his death as the first Iranian who was killed in car accident.

Dear Reader,
Assalam'alaikum, i am asking for advice about how to
contact a university in iran so i can study the
iranian ney.

i have been playing ney just by myself and i really
want to go to a music college/university in iran to
study it further.

i have heard that Isfahan is the centre for ney, does
any one know the address of the music university where
i can contact?

does any one know of other places in iran that teaches
the ney to a professional standard and would admit a
foreign student?

i am an ethnomusicologist by training and i would try
and include this in a future PhD.

my best wishes,
khoda hafiz,
Kevin Tilbury

Dear Nima,

you could ask for help Mr. Morteza Mojtahedy who organizes the Seminary of Iranian Music ( www.hamsaz.de) in Ludwigshafen which is rather close to Heidelberg. Though you can also mail him at info@... you will probably have a much bigger chance of receiving an answer by phoning him at +49-(0)611-37 06 22 (9:00 - 19:00) or mobile at +49-(0)163-370 62 22 (9:00 - 21:00).

At http://www.setar.info/Events.htm I read of setar courses in Cologne at Majid Derakhshani's ( majid_derakhshani@... ) Nava Music Centre as well as of Hamid Motabassem's ( hsdmotebassem@... ) Society of Tar and Setar Players there. But I do not know if this information is still accurate. Perhaps you might also find information in the Setar Info forum at http://pub42.bravenet.com/forum/show.php?usernum=3553138048&cpv=1.

Nevertheless I also forward your request to some groups. Perhaps someone their might give further information.

Best wishes,

Shajarian on European tour
Sat, 14 Apr 2007 21:08:12
The titan of traditional Iranian music Mohammadreza Shajarian is due to wow the crowds in Europe this month as he embarks on a European tour.

The master will be accompanied by his son Homayun along with tar player Majid Derakhshani, kamancheh player Saeid Farajpuri, and lutenist Mohammad Firuzi.

The month-long concert will open on April 29 in London and will move to Oslo, Stockholm, Gutenberg, Amsterdam, Frankfurt, Cologne, and Berlin.

He received UNESCO's Mozart Medal last January in Paris after staging a concert to commemorate Iranian mystic poet Rumi.

The 67-year-old Shajarian began his singing career in 1959 and rose to fame in the 1960s with his distinct style of singing.

He has been performing regularly in Iran and throughout the world. His performances have brought him universal acclaim.

Ustad Shajarian in Concert with Masters of Classical Persian Music

Concert - Introduction

29 and 30 April 2007, 7.30pm
Cadogan Hall, 5 Sloane Terrace, London SW1X 9DQ
Traditional Persian music has survived the test of many culturally challenging years. This concert is the embodiment of this living tradition at it's best.

Organised by

Nava Arts in association with the Iran Heritage Foundation.

Supported by

Performers

Ustad Mohammad Reza Shajarian (vocals), Majid Derakhshani (composer, tar [6-string lute]), Saeed Farajpoori (composer, kamancheh [upright fiddle]), Mohammad Firoozi (barbat [lute]), Homayoun Shajarian (tombak [hand drum], vocals).
Ustad Mohammad Reza Shajarian, is Iran's greatest contemporary vocalist, a truly living legend who has remained at the peak of his career for well over three decades. His flawless style has inspired an almost entire younger generation of vocalists and musicians and his numerous recordings are regarded as masterpieces of classical Persian music.
Ustad Shajarian will be accompanied by some of Iran's most celebrated composer/ instrumentalists including:
- Majid Derakhshani on tar, one of the finest contemporary composer/ instrumentalists whose compositions are regarded to be amongst the everlasting pieces of Persian music
- Saeed Farajpoori on kamancheh, one of the most sought after kamancheh soloists/composers, he has worked extensively with some of the greatest master musicians of Iran
- Mohammad Firoozi on barbat, one of Iran's leading barbat players, he has performed extensively throughout the world including numerous performances with Ustad Shajarian
- Homayoun Shajarian on tombak, a virtuoso percussionist and a grand vocalist in his own right, he has performed with his father since the age of 16 first as a percussionist and during the past few years as a co-vocalist

Introduction

In its authentic form, classical Persian music is an improvisational art, based on ancient maqams and complex rhythmic structures that have survived the test of time. Today's performances of classical Persian music are predominantly made up of both pre-composed and improvised elements and use contemporary as well as classical poetry. While deeply rooted in the traditions and teachings of many generations of master musicians, this music is nevertheless a truly dynamic tradition which, in parallel with classical Persian poetry, possesses the magical quality of defying the dimension of time and depicting the present.
Performances of Ustad Shajarian with various ensembles of master musicians are probably the most vivid manifestation of this special quality of Persian music.

Dear friends,

We have talked about religious songs and now a religious Urdu recording sample of 1920's is loaded in files of Safheh_Irani  yahoo group (here: s-nate Nabi_Urdu.mp3 and contains a qawwali in Urdu and is callad "Na't e Nabi").

May we say Its equal in Iranian music is "mowloodikhani"?

Dear friends,

"Iran hengam e kar ast" is a rare tasnif of about 1920 with a very few performances during last 90 years. Abolhassan khan Iqbal Azar (Iqbalossoltan) has performed the song about 60 years ago and when he was very old. This is a new performance by Salman Salek (tar), Ehsan Abedi (ney), rezakhah (santoor), Emad Moein (zarb), Baran Rezayy (vocal), Sulmaz Badri (vocal) and Maryam Bakhtiari (vocal) in Tehran Rudaki Hall (summer 2006) in a monthly session to survey rare tasnifs of 1920 to 1940:

Dear friends,

Many of Iranian music lovers are interested in watching Majid Vafadar's style in playing violin and his orchestra performance. This is a clip of about 1955/6 and Elaheh sings her first famous song "khandeh khandeh": http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9d6GIgg-XsY

You may know, Vafadar started his musical works when he was e teanage as a tasnif singer and recorded 4 tracks for Polyphon in 1927 and Haji Ali Akbar khan Shahnazi plays tar in those records. (see my article about Vafadar family in Safheh Sangi Journal)

I wish all to enjoy it.
