Persian Tar for sale : True Professional Quality may by Ostad
Farahmand
----------------------------------------------------------------------
-

Made by Ostad Farahmand who is one of the best maker in Iran. He has
made Tars for asaatid Lotfi, Aizadeh, Zarif, Talai...

If you are familiar with Ostad Jazayeri's Tars then you will
appriciate the fact that Ostad Farahmand was Ostad Jazayeri's teacher
in Tar making.

There is always a waiting list to purchase Ostad Farahmand's Tars so
you will not find any instrument as good as this one for sale in
Europe on US.

It is in perfect condition and sounds brilliant.

I have just purchased an old Tar that I was looking for a long time
so that is why I need to sell my Farahmand Tar.

If you need more information, pictures and details of the Tar please
email me on:

  enayatm@...

I am based in Europe but am willing to ship it to anywhere.

All the best

Dear friends,

We have many rare Persian recordings in "Bayat Kurd". What is the reason of choosing the name "Bayat Kurd"?
Has it inflenced by Kurdish muqams or melodies?

There is similar question for "Kurd e Shahnaz" that we can find in Persian or Persian-Tartar recordings in Tifkis and Baku in the first years of 20th century.

Any comment or info would be appreciated.

But since I am going to travel UK next month I would very much like to attend a Middle-Eastern, Iranian, Asian or other ethnic performance if there happens to be one during that time. I would be grateful if you would kindly mail me a copy of your posting to my personal address. Thank you very much!

Dear all,

I would like to draw your attention to the newly released CD "Music from Azerbaijan" by the Sari Gelin Ensemble which includes Gochaq Askerov (vocals), Aliagha Sadiyev (tar), Elshan Mansurov (kamancha), Shirzad Fataliyev (balaban, zurna), and Kamran Kerimov (naqara).

The Mugham vocalist Gochak Askerov (b. 1978) origins from the Qarabagh region which has throughout the history produced excellent singers. Among them is the named khanende Gochak whose warm voice is distinguished by softness and richness in timbre though being nevertheless strong and high in pitch. He follows the art school of the renowned Mugham master Mahmud Salah and repeatedly performed as part of his Ghadim Sharq Ensemble. Enjoying high popularity in Azerbaijan Gochak Askerov often performs at public concerts and on TV. He won awards of two national Republican competitions of young traditional singers and toured the UK and USA in 2007. In the US American journalist Thomas Goltz' documentary film "Mugham in Montana" Gochak Askerov played a main role. On BBC Radio 3 he performed twice that same year in the "World Routes" program with Lucy Duran. He performs frequently together with the gifted tar player Aliagha Sadiyev and the famous kamancha player Elshan Mansurov who was for many years member of  Alim Qasimov's ensemble. Also the flutist of the Sari Gelin Ensemble performed together with this world-wide renowned vocalist. Shirzad Fataliyev is noted as the most outstanding Azerbaijani traditional woodwind instruments player. He origins from a family of musicians coming from the ashiq school of the city Shirvan which is famous for this bardic tradition. Shirzad's father is a very prominent musician. The ensemble's naqara player Kamran Kerimov has repeatedly performed with the brothers Elshan and Malik Mansurov as well as with Aliagha Sadiyev. Kamran toured Iran, Turkey, France, USA, Germany, Italy, the Czech Republic, Japan, and South Korea.

The Sari Gelin Ensemble's beautiful new CD album was produced by the ethnomusicologist Ms. Sanubar Baghirova and is distributed by ARC Music at http://www.arcmusic.co.uk/shop/musicfromazerbaijansarigelinensemble-p-797.html?language=en where you can find more details and listen to some samples.

Dear all,

I have a question referring the dastgah-e shur which might perhaps seem amateurish to you. But I would appreciate your help. Once I heard that this dastgah is associated with a noble mind and a mature personality but at the same time also with new beginning and spring time. I would like to ask how the idea of the first two terms matches the idea of new beginning. In the CD booklet of Ostad Majid Kianis "Haft-Dastgah-e Musighi-e Iran" I read that the dastgah-e shur is related to the dusk, the start of creation, new birth, continuation of life as well as to the struggle, the search and the yearning for spiritual enlightenment. Is this enlightenment seen as a new creation or in which way is it associated with the genesis?

Best regards,
Judith Zech

In addition, we welcome those working on other aspects of Middle Eastern and Central Asian culture broadly speaking (dance, visual arts, media, film, literature, etc.)

Advance booking is requested via Valerie James at music@...; there will be a nominal charge of £5 to include tea and coffee. Attendance for students is free.

Door Dog Music Productions - Spring 2007 Newsletter
FALL 2007
Upcoming Event

FESTIVAL 2007

Dear Friend,

This Fall, Door Dog Music Productions will present its eighth season of the San Francisco World Music Festival, themed "The Lutes of the Deserts and the Mountains: An exploration of the ancient roots of music". Master lute players from around the world - from the high mountains of Tibet, to the deserts of Afghanistan -- will be invited to share the mysteries of their traditions. "We will attempt to develop connections between artists and cultures to their habitats in which they live," says Kutay Derin Kugay, Program Director of Door Dog Music Productions. "We will also highlight the uniqueness of the materials from which their instruments have been made, and the important effect this has had on the development of their music."

The San Francisco World Music Festival will run from September 23rd through October 7th in venues throughout the San Francisco Bay Area. At the Jewish Community Center of San Francisco on September 23rd, the festival will kick off with a commissioned world premiere entitled, "Here Comes the Sea Followed by the Ocean", a tribute to Rumi. The legendary Persian mystical poet Attar, whose own work is said to have influenced the great Rumi, spoke these words when he saw Rumi following behind his father as they made their way west to Anatolia from an unsettled home in Central Asia. This man's journey, in metaphor and reality is brought to life in present day, as the historical Rumi was a citizen of all the contemporary world's hot spots: Iran, Tajikistan, Afghanistan, Turkey, Iraq, Syria and Azerbaijan.

This newly commissioned work will present new compositions by Azerbaijani master kamancha musician and composer Imamyar Hasanov. The production also will feature traditional lute masters Azerbaijani tar virtuoso Rufat Hasanov, Chinese pipa master He Cheng Liu, Chinese erhu virtuoso Xiao Feng Zhang, Israeli oud player Yoel Ben-Simhon and Iranian master percussionist Pejman Hadadi. Lutes from the various countries include the tar, kamancha, pipa, erhu, and tembur accompanied by frame drums. This cross-cultural collaboration is paramount to Rumi's transcendent and universally humanist message and in keeping with Door Dog's mission to create artistic frameworks for master artists to meet.

"With 2007 declared by UNESCO as the year of Rumi, to commemorate 800 years since his birth, we also pause to reflect on this staggering milestone," explains Michael Santoro, Executive Director of Door Dog Music Productions. "This staged production will not be a literal celebration of Mowlana Jalaleddin Rumi, the historic figure and his life, but pull from his brilliant writings, ghazals (sung love poems) to create a contemporary look at these troubled regions, its inhabitants, their cultural vibrancy and its contemporary expression by artists in a fresh cross-cultural approach."

Continuing in our efforts to introduce cultures, music and artists to the larger community we will present several concerts and community events. On September 25, we will present in association with the Jewish Community Center of San Francisco Irsaeli-Moroccan singer Smadar Levi singing pan-Mediterranean songs in Arabic, Hebrew and Spanish. On September 26th, there will be an artist residency program at Alice Fong Yu School featuring Bulgarian tambura master Rumen Sali Shopov, who will work with the Alice Fong Yu Youth Orchestra & Percussion Troupe to present an evening concert to the community.

From September 27th-29th, there will be a series of intimate concerts at the Presidio Chapel focused on lutes of several countries and cultures, including Tibetan singer Techung and the Chaksampa Tibetan Dance & Opera Company on September 27, Indian sarode master Alam Khan on September 28, Afghani dutar and rubab master Aziz Herawi on September 29. The festival will close on October 7 with an afternoon concert of North & South Indian music featuring Indian youth vocalist Gaayatri Kaundinya and the Youth Ensemble of Trinity Center for Music at the Montalvo Arts Center in Saratoga in the South Bay.

Please join us for another exciting gathering of absolutely brilliant, world-class musicians.

Can you picture a world where Zakir Hussein (Indian tabla master), Shahram Nazeri (Iranian/Kurdish vocalist), and Mei Lanfang (Chinese opera master) are household names like Bach, Beethoven and Mozart? Can you foresee a time when children in American grade schools can choose to learn not just piano, cello or saxophone, but also the Japanese koto, the Portuguese guitarron, or the West African kora?

We at Door Dog Music Productions are actively imagining the possibilities of music and cultural understanding with every season of our highly acclaimed San Francisco World Music Festival, now approaching its eighth year this Fall. Our unique programs bring diverse peoples together, and thus create opportunities for bridging cultural divides.

We are a non-profit organization committed to identifying, nurturing and sustaining musical, artistic and cultural traditions throughout the world.

This coming Fall, we will launch a brand new commission called "Here Comes the Sea Followed by the Ocean", a tribute to Rumi. With 2007 declared by UNESCO as the year of Rumi, to commemorate 800 years since his birth, we also pause to reflect on this staggering milestone. This staged production will not be a literal celebration of Mowlana Jalaleddin Rumi, the historic figure and his life, but pull from his brilliant writings, ghazals (sung love poems) to create a contemporary look at these troubled regions, its inhabitants, their cultural vibrancy and its contemporary expression by artists in a fresh cross-cultural approach.

This past Spring, at Yerba Buena Center for the Arts, we produced a highly acclaimed staged show entitled "A Journey to China: Scholars, Goddesses & Warriors" featuring Chinese masters, along side five youth actors Chinese percussion, Chinese dance, and Chinese opera youth artists from the Alice Fong Yu Alternative School of San Francisco.

Just last summer, we launched the Laz people's first ever Green Yayla Arts, Culture and Ecological Festival, in the Eastern Black Sea region of Turkey. Surrounded by majestic glacial mountains and pure water springs, we worked as partners with the local people to revive a musical tradition that goes back centuries.

But we cannot launch new commissions, connect masters with the next generation, or revitalize musical traditions without you.

Here is how you can make a difference:
$500 will contribute towards artist fees. These esteemed master artists appear in the SF World Music Festival annually.
$250 will underwrite instruction and instrument purchases for students in the World Music In Schools program.
Even a contribution of $100 will help pay for a portion of the translation costs required to work with culturally diverse artists from overseas.

Please help us keep these links alive and vital. You can help us validate and sustain the world's traditional music through our quality programs. With your support, every dollar you contribute to Door Dog Music Productions will also be matched 1:1 by the San Francisco Foundation.

Your tax-deductible contributions are encouraged online at:
