Right, Louis recognized the shape of various continents, including IIRC
Antarctica. As has been said, one can either preserve the shape of
continents, or the relative placement, but not both. Since Louis
recognized Antarctica, and was also able to recognize the shape of other
continents, we're assuming it was the shape of the continents which was
preserved.
Polar projection means the continents should radiate out from either the
north or south pole. The link I gave pointed to a map centered on the
north pole... so it appears to me it fits the description in Rw about as
well as is possible. A south polar projection may make more sense,
since there's a landmass at the south pole but none at the north, but
OTOH there's more land on the northern hemisphere, so either way seems
about equally probable to me.

Well, I can't see how to fit that with the rest of the description. May
