Do you have Call of Cthulhu or Runequest?  If so then you could use the SF rules that somebody created for Cthulhu Rsing (http://www.cthulhurising.co.uk/) - complete with professions etc.  That would be a starting point.  There are some pdfs of the RWRPG rules around the web.  Somebody on this list may have them and contact you with the details - but I couldn't possibly do more.

GURPS 3rd ed is a good option for (re)building an SF setting what with well defined technology rules, vehicle design rules (as a suppliment) and cut and paste...
