Southern Africa Contact (Denmark) sends its greetings to the
delegates of the 6th General Congress of the Peoples United Democratic
Movement, December 20-24, 2006.
Day by day, we follow the people of Swaziland in its struggle to reclaim the
land, the history, the culture, and the very future of the Swazi people.
The crisis of the royal regime is becoming more and more aggravated. In every
sector, the royal state is showing increasing signs of disintegration and of
collapse. This is both a moment of great opportunity and of great danger for
the democratic forces of Swaziland.
The violent potential of the regime is by no means exhausted, and all steps must
be taken to counter it. At the same time, the tasks of national renewal and
development confronting the democratic movement are formidable.
We recognize that the international solidarity movement must be greatly
strengthened. It has, as yet, not achieved the level of international
influence that could be desired. Much still remains to be done in mobilizing
political and material support for the struggle of the Swazi people.
A necessary condition for the mobilization of international support is the
internal mobilization of the Swazi people itself and of its democratic
formations. It is their voice, their struggle and their aspirations that the
international solidarity movement can reflect and convey to their own
governments, political parties, trade union movements and popular
organizations.
The international community must act, but it is the action and initiative of the
Swazi people itself and of the democratic movement that in the end will bring
this about. The international community, not least The African Union, the
Commonwealth and the European Union must be moved to take significant action
against the royal regime, not least through sanctions which specifically target
the royal family and members of its government.
Southern Africa Contact (Denmark) is convinced that the 6th General Congress of
the Peoples United Democratic Movement will lead to a further strengthening
of the democratic movement, that it will create a new phase in the struggle of
the Swazi people, and that it will contribute to a deepening of the bonds of
international solidarity between our organisations.
