Re: [SIAMulations] Re: Windows

My business vendor (in New York) has a licence from Microsoft to downgrade preinstalled software from Vista to XP and refuses to sell any machine with Vista software for any business application.  He also is of the opinion that businesses needing to upgrade should go directly to NT7 when that becomes available and that Microsoft accepts that this is what will have to happen.

Subject: [SIAMulations] Re: Windows

Hello Tim,
I use Win XP Pro (NT 5.1) and believe I can successfully avoid using
Vista before Win NT 7 arrives sometime next year. I see no benefit
whatsoever in using Vista - only lost time and frustration. Given the
level of entrenchment of Win XP Pro in business, banking and
government, I don't believe even Microsoft would dare to alienate a
substantial portion of its revenue base by forcing users to move from
Win XP Pro to Win NT 7 via Vista. I have experimented with Ubuntu,
but I can find other things to do with my spare time and probably
won't pursue that.

Regarding DOSBox, I use DOSBox only for the full-screen simulations
(Signalboxes) and that was implemented without incident or
complication at all. I keep my simulations under

c:\Program Files\Trains\SIAM\

and so, the target of my DOSBox shortcut is:

"C:\Program Files\DOSBox-0.71\dosbox.exe" "c:\Program
Files\TRAINS\SIAM\Menu.exe" -exit -fullscreen -conf "C:\Program
Files\DOSBox-0.71\dosbox.conf"

The .conf file is as was issued. It works reliably and without trouble.

I have played with the IW32 sample and like the use of context menus
but I am not really comfortable with the way that F1 is implemented -
something more akin to the "working timetable" panel would be an
improvement, I think. (It does seem perverse though that South is to
the Right and North is to the Left though ! :) )

best wishes
