I’m not too sure what you mean by, “the look and feel
changes considerably with various versions of the same stations (eg reading 72/54).”The example you quote, Reading, changed quite a bit between 1954 and 1972 and I have played both
simulations. For a start in 1954
the simulation is steam and both the ex-GW and ex-SR stations and sheds were
operational. There was also
considerably more freight traffic.
By 1972 the SR shed and station had gone with the trains that used
to use it now using two platforms in the ex-GW station (4a & 4b I believe). These trains were now almost exclusively
electric units with the occasional diesel hauled cross country service. The ex-GW shed had gone and been
replaced by a diesel depot and there was considerably less freight. The track layout had been simplified as
well now that certain manoeuvres were no longer needed.
So there is quite a bit of difference between the two simulations
by the necessity of representing the location and traffic as accurately as
possible within the constraints of the programming I feel.I for one would be very disappointed if
there wasn’t a different look and feel to these two for example.
However, I do agree with your point about the West Country –
it has almost been done to death!

Possible non-major projects
Personally, I would like to see Nottingham
early 1970’s. I guess a waterloo or Clapham junction (any era)
would be too hard….
A protoype crossrail 2000 might be
interesting.
I would also suggest a tidying up of
standards across games. Depending on the whim of the programmer, the look and
feel changes considerably with various versions of the same stations (eg
reading 72/54)

Paul

Feel the West country has had its fair share of simulations with Exeter,
Newton Abbot, Plymouth and Penzance . ( I'm not a GWR
enthusiast particularly although I now live in ex Cambrian
territory) Would like to see something on the ECML . I'm not
suggesting something as complicated as possibly Peterborough or York,
maybe Grantham for instance Engine changing point a couple of branches to
Boston/Lincoln and Nottingham plus High Dyke traffic. Apart from a
minimal Kings Cross there is nothing on this main line. Or another simpler
option Grimsby/Cleethorpes
It's clear that a project the size of Exeter 1955 is close to, or perhaps beyond, the limit of what can be done by one person in a reasonable time. The point...
