That's more or less what Haynes advises except that you screw the special tool
into the top of each
shaft instead of using a socket.

Subject: RE: [Solent-BMG] Plungers
John many thanks, managed the job once I sat a had a good look, no appropriate
page in my version of
Haynes manual.
FYI. Removed pinch bolts top bottom and middle from each plunger, lower one acts
as a cotter pin.
Then after removing the threaded top plug, I used a suitable size socket,
extension and tapometer to
tap top of shaft and push out through bottom of frame.
Caution required before further dismantling of unit from frame as springs are
under compression.
I eased the spring assembly sideways half out of alignment with frame top &
bottom until sufficient
access to fit a long threaded stud through centre of springs and suitable size
washers either end to
control sudden expansion.
Finally tapped spring assembly free of end restraints whereupon it took up the
slack between the
retaining washers and nuts on the stud.
Simply undoing nuts on stud to allow expansion of springs and relief of tension.
Hey presto a handful of greasy springs and end caps.

I have never stripped mine, but the Haynes manual does describe how to do it
(page 96 of my edition)
and it doesn't sound very difficult. However, BSA service tool No. 61-3222 is
mentioned which is
apparently a rod tapped with the same thread as the plug that screws into the
top of each centre
column. Whether this is really necessary I am not sure.
