The Talmag Trophy Trial has been going at least 25 years. It is an
event organised at the end of January by the Territorial Army MCC
staged for classic 4 stroke trials bikes made before 1965. There are
a number of classes varying in engine capacity, form of chassis
suspension & solo or sidecar. As a military based club they have the
contacts to stage the event on Army land near Aldershot in Hampshire.
I've been to several Talmags over the years but not recently so when
I heard that several people I know locally were going it was a time
for `Why not? Lets do it!'
Just a 50 minute journey away & the safe knowledge that it was at
the same venue (Hungry Hill is not signposted on the roads & you
have to look for the temporary signs erected by the organisers)
found me at the scrutineering post, busily photographing anything
vaguely interesting.
After that it was a trot around the 15 sections to watch and snap
the makers & breakers(the bikes do two laps, a total of 30 sections
plus a special test as a tie-break decider). Marking was done in the
pre-65 manner so bunny-hops & the like counted as stops.
This year there were nearly 200 entrants from the UK and the
continent with mostly British but also some other European marques,
ranging from 200cc to 750cc bikes from between 1935 and 1964.
There were several small Triumph twins duly modified for the task in
hand & I took more than a passing interest of these.
All too soon it was time to head back, the event was still going on
but other commitments prevailed.
