Do you long to milonga? This short course is designed to take you from zero to hero in just three weeks.
Milonga is not tango speeded up. Originally the precursor of tango, it is a different dance with a different rhythm with its roots in African music and the Cuban habanera. Once understood it is not only fun and energetic but comfortable and relaxed as well.
This course booked out when it was offered recently in Southampton, with fantastic feedback from the participants.
What you’ll learn
Week 1: stop running!• learning to hear the milonga rhythm.
• Stepping into the ground
• Dancing patterns of two and four beats â€" in any combination
• women: what’s led in milonga â€" and what isn’t
• men: how to make your choreography with simple figures
Week 2: learning how to fly
• consolidation of week 1
• dancing patterns with 3 beats
• using the shoulders in milonga: learning how to fly (without getting air-sick)
• an introduction to phrasing in milonga
Week 3: turning
• milonga turns. Not like tango â€" but more fun
• men: turning in 3 beats â€" and in none
• women: learn how you are the engine in the turn (advanced): great for your tango as well
Your teacher
Michael Lavocah has been dancing tango for fourteen years and studying movement for more than 20 years. He studied directly with the milonga maestro Pepito Avellanada.
NEWMU
Thanks to everyone who attended the tea dance at NewMu on Sunday â€" sadly I was ill so couldn’t be there. Mike Harrington, the photographer, has processed the photographs he took. When they arrive in the post I’ll upload them to a photo website and will email those who attended details so they can view/purchase copies online if they wish. I’ll also take contact sheets to Norwich Tango on Friday Nights and will do a group order for those who prefer.Sadly that will be the last NewMu event, at least until the New Year. NewMu is being closed for refurbishment…. This means that the NewMu Christmas tea dance previously advertised for 9th December will not go ahead I’m afraid.
Watch this space for details of other social dance events….
