It’s Tango time at The Manor Ballroom, Ipswich!

Peppery
Productions are excited to announce that La Chicana, a top
tango band from Buenos Aires, will appear at the Manor Ballroom on Friday 18th April
2008.
La
Chicana is an absolute revelation, one of the funkiest takes on Tango
heard for many a year. The band draws on Tango from the 1920s and 1930s but
with a distinct twist. La Chicana hail from Buenos Aries, have won
prestigious awards, collaborated with BBC world music award winner Chango
Spasiuk and gained great reviews from both Froots and Songlines.
La
Chicana was formed in early 1996 with the clear intention of producing
tango music with a rougher edge; they favour the "canyengue" rhythms
and humorous melodrama of early tango as opposed to more solemn later
flavours. They truly believe that the essence of tango lies in its 1920s
spirit of rebellion and spontaneity which puts it ideologically closer to roots
music than to the orchestral forms that popularised it in the world since the
1940s.
But they don't lack subtleties or precision; they are fine musicians with a
taste for improvisation and texture. All they need is the chance to prove
that tango music should thrive as popular music in the streets while it
continues to dazzle from the orchestral stand.
Set to
appear at The Manor Ballroom in Ipswich on 18th April, La Chicana have
delighted audiences all over the world (Spain, Germany, Brazil, Canada, England
and Senegal) and have added to their music, elements of different cultures akin
to tango along the way.
Don’t
miss what will inevitably be another great night of live roots music from
Peppery!
