HI Michael - I have had an amazing time and took part in my first ever
barge match. I joined Tim, Gary and George Diddams at the Decima for
5am on Friday and we motored out of Faversham creek behind Repertor.
George told loads of stories as we washed the barge down on the way to
the Medway and Gary brought news of the Ethel Maud. Wind was scarce so
we set the sails but got nowhere, so motored up the Medway and moored
near Mirosa. Sadly, George and Gary had to leave the barge although
Gary was back in the morning.
Having spent a happy and restful night on board, Saturday morning came
and the gathered barges waited for the start gun - it really is quite
something being so close to the other barges vying for position. We
got off well and Reminder kept pace with us until the outer mark where
Tim got the better of her and Decima began to show her strength as the
wind increased as we raced into the 'harbour'. It was a delight to
watch Mirosa and Marjorie pass us before the outer mark - Marjorie got
back first ahead of Repertor and Mirosa. We came in next keeping Adieu
and Thistle behind us!
Thanks to Tim's generosity, I really had a marvellous time, learnt
loads, met some great people and cannot wait to repeat the experience.
