HI Michael.  Yes Ethel Maud is progressing and is jacked back into her proper. Must phone Gary to get some 'insider' photos. Certainly most of her frames have been renewed and the rebuild continues. Thankfully she is in good hands!

Another one bites the dust.
On the good news front, I had a look at Shoregate Dock last Saturday
and much work has been done on the restoration of Ethel Maud. She has
a new transom and what looks like a port wale is going in which
suggests frames have been attended to. The gates were locked so I
photographed her through the wire.

Lovely photos Paul. Thank you. Obviously the "Marjorie" photo was the
best....!! What a day that must have been. Loved the way they are
sailing above their reflections. Bit more wind looked as if it could
have been useful. Hope to catch up with you one day Paul! First one to
stop talking about barges buys the drinks!! lol

Cheers Paul........ here I sit indoors plugging away at painting.
Outside is hot and sunny....... and now you tell me about this!! It's
just not fair!! I have to say that ther is nothing that can compare
with being PART OF THE CREW rather than being a spectator and being
aboard a barge at night doubly so. Hope you agree.
For years I have watched barges and painted them from a spectators
point of view but having now had the priveledge of crewing on them
that experience i hope has paid off in my paintings..... one thing is
wrong now........ at the moment I am painting a glider painting!! haha

Yesterday I was invited along to the 2006 shakedown sail of Henry -
and what a day! She went really well and the litle bit of experience
on Decima and Greta recently have started to pay off. We moored to
wait for the tide to get into Faversham Creek by the Horseshoe Sands
opposite- see photo. Eventually we crept up the creek in the dark
(well moonlight) with searchlight on the bow to our berth. What an
experience!

Yes but only a few! Love the one of Marjorie as she glided passed us
before the outer mark - see Medway Match Photo file.

HI Michael - I have had an amazing time and took part in my first ever
barge match. I joined Tim, Gary and George Diddams at the Decima for
5am on Friday and we motored out of Faversham creek behind Repertor.
George told loads of stories as we washed the barge down on the way to
the Medway and Gary brought news of the Ethel Maud. Wind was scarce so
we set the sails but got nowhere, so motored up the Medway and moored
near Mirosa. Sadly, George and Gary had to leave the barge although
Gary was back in the morning.

Having spent a happy and restful night on board, Saturday morning came
and the gathered barges waited for the start gun - it really is quite
something being so close to the other barges vying for position. We
got off well and Reminder kept pace with us until the outer mark where
Tim got the better of her and Decima began to show her strength as the
wind increased as we raced into the 'harbour'. It was a delight to
watch Mirosa and Marjorie pass us before the outer mark - Marjorie got
back first ahead of Repertor and Mirosa. We came in next keeping Adieu
and Thistle behind us!

Thanks to Tim's generosity, I really had a marvellous time, learnt
loads, met some great people and cannot wait to repeat the experience.

so lottery funding will be very useful!

I've been out on Greta pulling a few ropes and learning learning

Thalatta is a St. Osyth and is undergoing a major rebuild which is
likely to take +/- three years. The photos I have posted shows the
extent of this restoration / rebuild.

British King II latest is that she is being readied for
transportation. As can be seen in the photos I have posted you'll see
a framework and supports. Big news is that David Speight has been
approached by a film company with a view to using her in a Dunkirk
scene.

Crikey Paul...... sorry mate I totally forgot to say thank you. Big
apologies and a BIG THANK YOU!! Fantastic, she was the 2nd barge I
ever went aboard and that was for researching a painting. Just out of
curiousity have you seen Fred Everard in the book "Everards of
Greenhithe" I was amazed the way she looked after being converted. You
could never tell she was once a barge.
Thank you again Paul

Hi Michael and thanks for update. I will put my hand up and say I haven't paid  my membership fee as yet  (slap wrists) although this will be addressed this week. (tut tut, I hear you thinking).

I had a super last few days - helping out on the Henry - her hull and stern look really good, and sailing on the Greta both Sunday and Monday. Day job seems rather lack lustre in comparison, but it pays the bills! Keep thinking of the John Kemp book, 'A Fair wind for London' - the office job, an understanding boss and a love for barges. Don't they just get you? Can't wait to get back to Standard Quay.

Did you get my pictures of the Will? She has gone from Otterham Quay so look out for her.
Regards
Paul

Hi Paul good to hear from you. Well the AGM:-
A "renunion walk" is outlined for Sun 3rd Sept on Foulness, we have
312 members slightly down on this time last year, but then as was

soc. has 10,093.60. The Archives plans to have the Open Day 22nd
July. (hint of a mystery cleb being there). The Deadeye Trophy went
to Catherine De Bont and the Editor of Traditional Boat etc. The 1/2
Model went to Pat O'Driscoll and the workers packing up Dolphin Yard
got the Colindell Trophy. Which reminds me.... Supreme Cement who
have taken back Dolphin have now themsleves been taken over by
Ibstock Bricks. A little snippet that came out from a letter that
Tony Farnham read out that caused me much interest. "Piper's had 3
wooden barges being built when ironpots became popular. One of them
was so advanced that she was acually named "Malcolm Piper" but then
they were broken up".
Derek Coombe is writing his last book. This I understand is
regarding East Anglian and Thames maritime trades.
Richard Smith's book "The Thames Barge In Suffolk" is at the printers
Tony Osler's book "Where yer for" will be on your doormat in around
6 - 8 weeks time.
Topsail may be delayed this year though Richard Walsh is doing his
best but home commitments have a much higher priority. We are very
grateful to Richard as he has had to resign from all his other
committees - we are the only committee he sits on now. And no to put
to fine a point on it..... without him the SSBR are stuffed for
cheap professional publications (apart from the Newsletter). Charles
Traill was very apologetic re the latest Newsletter. It seems that
none of the printing staff checked it. Charles explained that 2 page
articles which should be side by side are now overleaf. Well I could
go on!!
During my lunchbreak I walked up to the gallery near to Leigh
Sailing Club and in there is the badge board from William Cleverley.
Seems the artist was a close friend and neigbour to Fred Cooper....

Hi Mike - did you get to AGM? Couldn't make it this year
unfortunately. Any news we all need to be aware of?

Spent yesterday afternoon tarring port side of Henry - she comes out
of drydock tomorrow and Decima goes in. A blur of activity at Standard
Quay yesterday - watch out for the Lady of the Lea topsail. Bonus
points too for guessing where her new steering gear came from!(the
Oak).

Good news is that the Orinnoco may be up and sailing end of
July/August and I have managed to volunteer my services into possibly
helping tar the hull. Just wait until you see her sprit - I say no
more!

If weather holds I'm out for a trip on Greta tomorrow, and I really
can't wait!!

Message for other Mike (Dr W. ):- have you got all your barge
programme back issues yet? I've obtained a few from various sources -
can you post what you still require? Regards, Paul

Hi everyone. After a bit (!) of a lay off from the barges I've been
busy on Henry and given her stern a fresh coat of paint. Can anyone
tell me what and if there were any standard colours used, please? I
guess certain fleets were painted similar colours to aid
identification, much as the house flags (bobs) were used.
