Championship?
Sailors & Marines -
FYI. Not sure exactly what's being planned, but this was news to me
and I thought you all might like the inside track.
Whatever happens, I'd really like to give Ms. Stanley (and Ms. Keaton)
a big hand with getting this tournament off the ground, so I think the more
people we get involved in the planning phase of this the more successful it
will be. Please contact me via email at
matthew.nemmers@... or
qcchess@... if you'd be willing to help with promotion and whatever
else she may need. And again, when you Navy guys get a free minute or two,
please drop me an email with your work and civilian email addresses so I can
get an updated list of Navy players to Ms. Stanley.
Take care and have a very Happy New Year!
Best Regards,
PN1(SW) Matt Nemmers

Hey Matt!
Totally cool to hear from you! Loved the email and truly appreciate
all your enthusiasism and dedication. As a matter of fact, me and Robin
Keaton (Marine Corps) have already discussed this issue. MC does not hold an
elimination tournament either....neither the Navy or MC has ever had enough
participation. We are considering holding a joint one this year. So......my
budget is limited, but I am looking into it. I just wanted to acknowledge
your email at this point...and I will prepare a more thorough response after
the New Year. AND....I will be taking you up on your offers of help....I'll
need it!!!!
And FYI, you used the correct channel to introduce this idea. I am the
correct point of contact. I can also tell you, that I will not be able to
hold two tournament, East and West, as suggested. I definitely do not have
the funding for that. I am hoping to be able to offer assistance on travel
costs...just like with the Interservice and NATO tournaments. The likely
locations would be in Quantico or here in Millington.
Again, once Robin and I reconnect after the holiday season, I will
prepare a more detailed response for you and we will need to solicit
interest level from our Navy and MC players. The target dates are 25 April
through 01 May. The Interservice is 20-25 June, so we need to give time in
between. As you know the NATO tournament this year is in August....early
Aug, like 08-14!!!!!!!!!!
I wish you a very Happy New Year Matt!!!! Mine will be quiet and
subdued....can you believe that shit??????????? What the hell is happening
to me?????????? ;)
Rock On,
Dee

Subject: Navy Chess
Hi Dee! Hope you're having a great holiday season and getting some
much deserved time off.
I was talking to Master Chief Mark Butler today about the possibly
getting a Navy chess championship tournament organized, one that would serve
as a qualifier for the Interservice Chess Championships in 2004. All the
other branches have one so we thought it'd be cool to jump on the bandwagon.
I know time is of the essence and funding is probably nil, but what
do you think are the possibilities of getting this off the ground, shooting
for the late-April/early-May timeframe? Spread out as we all are, I know
it'd be difficult to get everyone in a central location, so the Master Chief
suggested that we maybe have two events, holding a Navy East and Navy West
tournament in the two major Navy hubs: San Diego and Norfolk.
(Incidentally, I suggest having a Navy Central tournament in Great Lakes due
to my proximity, but that's me.) :)
I know you're spread pretty thin and have little time to devote to
something like this at this late date, but I would be more than willing to
help out in any way I can, even in the organization and direction (e.g.
being the TD) of any event(s) you think we could pull off. I imagine Dr.
Perciballi would be game to help out considering everything he's done for
Navy chess in the past, but I know he's a busy man. However, I'm sure there
are others out there who would be willing to lend a hand.
The format could be a three-day, six-round tournament with a
time-control of 40/2, SD/60 -- that's my suggestion. It's a lot of chess to
pack into three days, but not all commands are very eager to let their
people go to play chess, especially not twice or three times a year,
depending on whether they make the Navy team and consequently move on to
play at NATO. I'd like to meet somewhere in the middle so as not to be a
burden on the commands yet allow people to participate if they're able to.
Funding seems to be the biggest issue, but personally, I would make every
effort to play even if I had to take leave or go no-cost TAD.
I'm including a list of Navy players and their contact information
(current to the best of my knowledge) for your (and everyone else's) info.
I've got an email out to the Yahoo! group "militarychess" asking for Navy
players to send me their updated contact info and will get the ones I
receive to you once I've consolidated the roster.
Finally, I wonder what needs to happen in order to get this off the
ground? I'm aware of all the things a director/organizer needs to do to run
a tournament, but I'm curious about the MWR side of the house. If we wanted
to do this -- and ideally, get MWR to foot the bill! -- how would we go
about requesting it? Is there a form or letter we'd need to fill out? I
could contact the MWR coordinators at San Diego, Norfolk or wherever it's
decided to be held to get the location, but I don't want to skip any steps
or jump any chains of command, so any info you can get me would be greatly
appreciated.
Anyways, sorry to be so long-winded. Hope you and your family are
doing great and I'm looking forward to seeing you again real soon! Take
care.
Best,
Matt Nemmers
