Hi Elizabeth,

Have you managed to get this sorted? If not check that under the
formatting tab on the Web Pages Creation Screen the Surname Index
include box is checked and then select the type you require.

Additionally you may like to include a Name List which gives the
first names as well, you will find this under the same tab. They work
for all types of web pages.

Hi Dick,

Whilst in principle I do not disagree, but putting "was..." after the revised
name does enable others to readily check the start of the thread if necessary.

Possibly true ... but seeing as how a "new" topic / question is the subject,
putting the "... was xyz ..." seems pointless.

   Hi Dick,

Whilst in principle I do not disagree, but putting "was..." after the revised
name does enable others to readily check the start of the thread if necessary.

One more comment ... putting "... was XYZ ..." in the SUBJECT line is another
"bad habit" to break! If you have the time to enter that phrase, you also have
the time to simply change the "subject" itself ...

again ... the SUBJECT line does not match the ACTUAL topic / question.

It's not that difficult to change the SUBJECT line.

Nope, on the WUL website at: http://uk.groups. yahoo.com/ group/WUL/ there is
a Links tab and you can put your website address - www.buxtonairedales .com -
there and a few words on what it is about (include your dogs if you wish!). As I

Subject: Has anyone on list actually created a genealogy book?

Hello,

I am just beginning the creation of a genealogy book and am wondering
if anyone on this list has ever actually done this? I would
GREATLY(!!!!) appreciate tips and 'how-to's' from those with
experience as it would save me a lot of trial and error, not to
mention time.

No one has ever written about my family or my husband's family and I
would dearly love to get this accomplished while I am still able to do
so (the years are slipping away faster than I wish!!). Our families
have been patiently waiting a long time. I have gathered an enormous
amount of information over the past decade and have most of it entered
into Legacy.

Now, I would like to proceed with the book but I'm wasting a lot of
time just trying to figure out what things to 'checkmark' and
'uncheckmark'! LOL

I know how I want the books to be layed out and what I want included.
Is there anyone who could tell me the "how to include/exclude" of each
step in the process if I take it one step at a time and ask for help
with each step?

This is going to be a good group I believe. I'm thankful for the help
I have received already.

Elizabeth

Hi Elizabeth,

It's a good idea and no doubt many here have (to a greater or lesser extent)
made such books, but I'm sorry this question is best answered on LUG at

Comments on my website: http://www.kim-webb.org? I just put it up with
the help of "Teach yourself Web Publishing with HTML 4 in a Week". It
cost $9.00 at Amazon.com.

I have also added a biographies section.

Hello jassaltoman
Well you must be a quick learn! Your Legacy website looks great, I
especially like the beautiful family picture with mouse-over names.
Have you changed the format of the Names List, it seems quite different from
standard output.
The Biographies are wonderful - perhaps you could create an event so there
is a pointer to the Biography from the Individual's page.
Kind regards,
Mary Young

I'm new to this group and this is my first response. I hope I am
doing it right by appending it to your message.

Thanks for the applause.
I did change Legacy|Internet|Create Web Pages|Links such that I
checked "Include a custom HTML footer on each page", and also
checked "Remove program generated footers". Then I copied some HTML
in the space above so as to place my additional Biographies link in
the new custom footer for each page. Good suggestion about adding an
option to go directly to the bio from the individual's page. I don't
know how to do that; I'll have to think about it.

I'd suggest a new Event "Biography" with the Individual's page URL in

I think the coding was discussed a while ago on LUG - special

You can put a line like the one below in any Legacy text field. In individual
notes would be one example.

«a HREF="joes_biography.htm"»Click here«/a» to read Joe's biography.

When the web page is generated the above entry will look like the following:

Click here to read Joe's biography.

Of course joes_biography.htm needs to be a path to wherever the biography rsides
on the web.

Hi,

The way to input the angle brackets « and » is to press the Alt key and whilst
holding it down type 174 for « and Alt 175 for » *using the number pad to

I do so much coding directly in event notes, I just add them to the
special character strip. I have suggested the idea of a snippet strip
several times in the past, but it never went anywhere, so I just keep
UltraEdit open as a side window for quick cut/paste.

Thanks to Gordon and Ron for explanation.
And, I guess, we can add those special characters to the character ribbon!

What is the best way to include census images? Is this something I can
do through Legacy, or is it something I will need to do outside of
Legacy if I want the census images to display on my website (ultimatey)?

Hi Mary,
I have placed the following code under General Notes for my grandfather,
Edward Byron Kimball shown at http://www.kim-webb.org/15.htm and it
works O.K.

Now if I wish to do the same type of thing on (50) other .htm pages
and don't wish to have it overwritten each time I re-upload Legacy
"Create Web Pages" (for updates), how do I preserve the above link on
all those pages? Would I just click "No" when asked if I wish to
overwrite?

Carol,

I would advise against doing this as whilst the information is public the images
are copyright. In the UK they are Crown Copyright and even companies like
Ancestry have to pay for a license to use them. I would think the position is
the same in most other companies.

In general large images should not be included in web pages as they take too
long to download and the usual way would be to place an expanding thumbnail
picture on the site. One way of doing this is to place a coding in the form of
<a href="big_picture.jpg"><img src="thumbnail.jpg" border="0" align="right"
alt="name_of_picture Click Here to Enlarge"></a> where you wish the picture to
appear (align can equal left, right or centre with left being the default).

You can create an event to hold the coding as has been mentioned in a previous
thread,.

That is the way Legacy does it, the other, which I tend to prefer for my own
pictures is to use javascript

What is the best way to include census images? Is this something I can
do through Legacy, or is it something I will need to do outside of
Legacy if I want the census images to display on my website (ultimatey)?

Hi Dave,

I am making the assumption from what you have written that you entered the
coding directly onto the html page. In this case you are correct in being
concerned about what will happen on updating. As all the pages have to be
created when updating your link will, indeed, have to be re-entered for each
page. There is a way round this which I have to use as I do directly enter code
on each and every page but it is complex and takes time. Unfortunately I have no
alternative - but you have.

If you enter your coding as «a href="bio html/kimballedwardbyron.htm"»Edward
Byron Kimball biography«/a»
under the General Notes *in Legacy* on each individual for whom it applies ie.
using Alt+174 and Alt+175 as previously described then they will automatically
be inserted when you update (as long as you have the "General Notes" included).

As an aside it is not such a good idea to have a folder name with a space in it
as some servers do not recognise them or stick something else there and your
link won't work - yours seems not to mind but my current server doesn't
recognise them.

Hi Ron,

I would strongly suspect that ancestry.com has permission from the Public
Records Office to issue the limited use license to the subscribers of their
site. And, as Carol said she actually emailed them and they said it was
ok...

I use SwiSHmax for my website and wanted it installed on my desktop and my
laptop. I paid for a second license for my laptop and several months later
found out that SwiSHmax allows you to install a copy on your laptop without
paying. The same way Legacy allows a second copy to be installed on a laptop
without paying another fee. Arrrggghh!! It's sometimes hard to get the
licensing info without a lot of researc.

picture on the site. One way of doing this is to place a coding in the form of
<a href="big_picture. jpg"><img src="thumbnail. jpg" border="0" align="right"
alt="name_of_ picture Click Here to Enlarge"></a> where you wish the picture to
appear (align can equal left, right or centre with left being the default).

Hi Ron,

Thanks for the reply.
1. The « and » double brackets didn't work so well when I tried it so
I used < and >. It worked O.K. then.
2. Do I understand you correctly that I should enter the HTML code in
Legacy|Family|Notes|General?

Hi Dave,

Apologies for top posting in reply to your bottom posting btw. I am using Yahoo
Mail beta and I haven't fathomed out how to bottom post on this without getting
interference from the ads!

To answer your points:
1. You are correct the double angle brackets do not work on scripts.
2. Yes we are suggesting that the links are placed in
Legacy>Family>Notes>General. You will find that by using the Alt+ the links will
not print in reports.

I hope that answers your points.

Hi Ron,

I guess I will "top post" also. I have retrogressed. I haven't
uploaded my latest error to the website, but when I now test Legacy
locally, my "Link to Biography URL within an Individual's page"
doesn't work. It html code is still on the individual pages, but it
doesn't appear as a link with the brower anymore. Only the html code
itself appears (<a href="biohtml/kimballedwardbyron.htm">Edward Byron
Kimball biography</a></p>). I must not have the right box checked.
Any ideas?
Dave

Hi again Ron,
I have found the problem and may have uncovered a Legacy bug.
Originally I got satisfactory presentations of the links by using
Notepad to modify the .htm files. Then acting on your previous
suggestion, I entered the html code directly on the
Legacy|Family|Notes|General pages. When I created Internet pages the
compiler changed

<a href="biohtml/armitagemaylouise.htm">May Louise Armitage
biography</a></p> to

<a href="biohtml/armitagemaylouise.htm">May Louise Armitage
biography</a></p></font></p>

The replacement of < with < and > with "> caused the link not
to work when viewed with the browser. I changed the .htm pages back
using Notepad and it worked again. I think Legacy needs to be
notified of this. Any comments?
