I tried to do a search on the messages for this because I know it is really
basic and probably been done before but Yahoo won't let me.

My website is here: http://tinyurl.com/ykwrgkz. Click the Parrott link to get to
the page I'm referring to below.
I want to show my own personal information - it's my pedigree file - without
showing any other living people's details.
I tried calling myself Invisible in Legacy and then checking Include Invisible
individuals on the Who tab of the Create Webpage. But I still only get Living
for my information on the webpage. Neither is my surname in the list. I'm sure
it's easy but where to start!
Also footers: If I use a custom footer (I like "...created on....and updated
on...by...")and check Remove program-generated footers on the Links tab, I lose
the Option of having my Home page link on each page (+ Surname, TOC, Name links
as well). The program produced footer "Created on etc" is easily edited for the
main pages but not on 400+ individual pages.
I'm sure there's a work around somewhere. Forgive me if these topics are covered
already in the list.
Thanks
Bryan

Bryan,

I will deal with the second part first, as it's easier! I don't know how
familiar you are with HTML, but here is what Legacy puts in your footer:

<div align="center">
<hr noShade SIZE=3>

<p><a
href="http://homepages.slingshot.co.nz/~bryannp/parrott/index.html">Home</a> |
<a href="index.html">Table of Contents</a> | <a
href="surnames.html">Surnames</a> | <a href="names.html">Name List</a></p>

<p><font size="1"><b>This Web Site was Created July 2008 and updated on 17 Aug
2010 with <a href="http://www.LegacyFamilyTree.com">Legacy 7.4</a> from <a
href="http://www.LegacyFamilyTree.com">Millennia</a></font></b></p></div>

Select whatever you want from this and include it in the customised box and then
check the remove Legacy generated footers. If you do not know exactly how to do
this, please come back to us saying which part you would like to be deleted. *It
is essential that you use Plain Text* when so doing.

For the first part you cannot do this in Legacy, so what I would do is to create
a Pedigree site comprising yourself, wife, children (if you have these - I
didn't check) and your parents and both your paternal and maternal grandparents.
I do this by tagging all these people and selecting only those with that tag
when creating the pages. You can then swap your file from these (I guess it's
1.html) with the 1.html file which you have generated using the full Legacy
file.

Remember: Please use Plain Text when replying. It is not mandatory on this site
but this email contains HTML which may play havoc otherwise!!

Hi Ron/Group
Thank you. Both have worked very well. I don't get myself in the surname
list with the tagged pedigree file but that's no big deal. I'm very good
with HTML - as long as I copy other's text very carefully!
Thanks again

Hi Bryan
Congrats on your website. I love your photo collages on the family homepages.
Re your first query (showing your own details and not other Living people).
I set most Living people as "Private".  This was done individually
(can it be done globally?).
My own page shows results http://cmy.iay.org.uk/ped-lewis/154.htm.
You can see my birthname, but not my husband and children; you can
deduce I have two children and five grandchildren but not their
gender, or whether they are all Living.
Relatives who've agreed to be shown are linked from my custom Legacy

Mary,

I too liked that photocollage. To answer your point re: Privacy, as such it is
not possible to do this globally but when creating webpages the options are
given to publish names only, or simply state "Living", for living people.

My choice, unless the individual declines, is to publish only the name

For some reason a piece of my last post was not sent!! I went on to say that if
a person does decline to publish their name then I mark that person as
"Private", I do not use the "Living" option at all.

Ron
I have many Living people in my database, it would be impossible to consult
them all, so they are marked Private unless they've "opted-in".

I have been running Legacy Standard for several years on a Compaq Pentium
computer running Windows XP SP2. The current version is 7.4.0.45. I have a
database of around 10000 individuals. For Source Citations I have a Master
Source list (eg "UK 1851 Census") and the Detail field will be the individual
reference (eg "HO107-456 F12 P8").

Recently, some Details have been disappearing, overwritten with an apparently
random single letter or, occasionally, a detail being used to update another
unrelated record. It is difficult to gauge the size of the problem as, as far as
I know, I cannot view Detail lists.

I have tried Check/Repair but the problem persists. Is the best solution to
Export to a new Legacy file, or to install a fresh version of Legacy and use a
Backup copy, or will these just transfer the same problem to the new database?

Your advice would be appreciated.

This is probably not the best forum for this question to be answered, because
the specialists here are web site developers. I would suggest that you are
better using Legacy User Group.

Personally, I have not met this problem, although I am using Legacy Delux. I
would not expect Check/Repair to resolve it either, as it is not a relationship
problem. When contacting LUG you will need to say whether the files affected are
using Basic Sourcing, or Source Writer, or both.

I cannot see that exporting to a new file will help, as it will probably
transfer the problem. It maybe the the best approach would be to
uninstall/reinstall Legacy and restore a backup which is free from the problem.

I do however, recommend that you post the question on LUG.

I am continuing efforts to try to display images in my web pages without
undue effort and room for error. It looks like I will have to enter the html
link for each image in the notes as I write the biography. Here is the code
I used for a census image:

James appears in the household of his father in the «a HREF="
http://website.com/genealogy/sources/cen.1840.jpg" Target="blank"» 1840
census«/a» in Johnson County, Indiana, as between the ages of 5 and 10.

The link and text appear correctly in the web page; however, when I generate
an Individual Report on this individual, the html code displays exactly as I
have it entered in the notes.

I thought the html code for links would automatically be stripped out based
upon this snippe\t from Legacy Help:

"EMBEDDING HTML CODES INTO NOTES:

... When producing a web page or HTML file, the double angle bracket would
be changed to regular angle brackets and the Legacy word would then become a
link that would take the reader to the Legacy web site when clicked. When
producing a report, the added codes would be removed so that the reader
would not see them

Other codes, such as bold and italics, are sent to both the HTML file and
the printed report in the appropriate formats."

When the Help file says these added codes would be removed, surely it
doesn't mean each one individually by hand! Am I missing something?

Thanks,

Sherry

No, you are not missing anything; the help article is just another bit of
wishful thinking. The removal of non-text formatting has never been implemented.
I make extensive use of coding in notes and long ago had to chose between
maintaining two separate family files, with and without, or giving up paper
reports. I opted for the latter.

Much to my regret Wm is correct and I too had to chose, and selected the same
option as Wm.

Ideally, Legacy would strip the html tags for reports and formatting codes such
as 'tab' when converting to html, it does neither despite requests having be
made for these options for years.

When I place pictures for my web pages in the General, Research or Event
Notes I use the 'Privacy Brackets', ie. [[ and ]].

For your example;

James appears in the household of his father in the [[<a HREF="

<http://website.com/genealogy/sources/cen.1840.jpg>" Target="blank"> ]]1840

census[[</a>]] in Johnson County, Indiana, as between the ages of 5 and 10.

Then I can choose to not 'print [[ Private ]] notes' for reports or, 'print
[[ Private ]] notes' for web pages and select 'Remove [[ ]]'.

That works for me but, as Ron and Wm are not doing that and say it has been
a problem for years, then I think I must be missing something here!

Regards,

   Dave (NZ).

Dave,

I cannot speak for Wm, but I use privacy brackets for other things in my notes
such as information relating to an individual which I do not wish to publish.
These may be things like notes to myself for future work, as well as personal
stuff.

When I place pictures for my web pages in the General, Research or Event

Notes I use the 'Privacy Brackets', ie. [[ and ]].

For your example;

Regards,

Dave (NZ).

Subject: [WUL] Using html in Notes

I am continuing efforts to try to display images in my web pages without

undue effort and room for error. It looks like I will have to enter the html

link for each image in the notes as I write the biography. Here is the code

I used for a census image:

James appears in the household of his father in the <a HREF="

http://website.com/genealogy/sources/cen.1840.jpg" Target="blank"> 1840

census</a> in Johnson County, Indiana, as between the ages of 5 and 10.

Thanks,

Sherry

Dennis,

I agree, it is also only a one-way solution, consider, for example a table which
may contain URLs - I, know, an extreme example and used only to illustrate the
point!

But only for the narrow issue of embedding an image link (or the like).
If you use coding for tables, formatting letter transcriptions,
alternate characters, etc., you are stuck with the choices previously
offered.

I never attempted that one! At most I put in a link to an image or a
webpage.

I could have swore that at one time Legacy removed the
double-angle-brackets (and everything in between them) when printing.
But it has been a long time since I printed anything.

I also thought that the angle brackets etc. had been stripped at one time, but
it is not the case now. It may be that they were only stripped in certain
functions eg. Research Notes (I am not being specific), but it has been so long
since I last saw them stripped (if at all) that I cannot remember!

They haven't been stripped since v4 that I remember. They certainly
aren't in v5, where I still remain.

An embedded table with page links:

Thanks to Dave for helping me with a workaround for embedding image links
into notes. His use of [[private]] does work! It strips out the html code in
printed versions and includes them in my web.

Thanks to Mary for showing me a way to achieve a clean narrative using NOTES
events. This allows me to attach sources and images to each specific Notes
event!

*My new problem is*: When I create my web I have the choice of displaying
Events in either List or Sentence style, with either bullets or numbers. Is
there possibly a way to choose NEITHER bullets or numbers. This is killing
my nice, clean narrative.

Getting close :-)

Glad you got your image placed and sorry for sort of hijacking the
question with the arcana of embedding code.

As for the bullets, the answer is no, but you can easily do a global
search and replace after the pages are built and remove them. If you do,
make sure you use the bullet option, not the numbers.

The Help file is correct, those HTML Codes should be removed from the reports.
They are correctly handled in the Narrative Style Reports but not in the
Individual and Family Group Sheet Reports.

I have entered a problem report in our tracking system , Number 3610, to have
these two reports corrected.

Is there a simple code to use to add a visitor counter to my Legacy Home page?

Is this something I'd need to get from my hosting service or could I use some
basic simple code that would count each visitor?

I'm using Legacy to create and display an alpha database of Obituary
transcriptions for a given county in my state. It's not the perfect software for
this project but I've made it work for my simple purposes.

My thanks for any help on the visitor counter question.

Well, I should have searched for this information on the net. I searched the
list archives and didn't find anything but didn't think to google it before
I posted.

I've found free code that can be used but since I update my site frequently
and will be replacing the index page with each update, I wonder if the count
will restart with each site update?
