Mary,

You will lose all of them! On the bottom right of the Web Create screen there
are two buttons, these are for the Load and Save of your settings. Just click
the Save, give the file a name and Save - I suggest that you note the folder in
case it gets lost, I think there is a folder called "Settings" to which it saves
by default, but I might have created this. When you want it back clicking Load
should take you back to that folder, just open the file you created.

Hi Ron

Thanks for your advice to try the Webpage Reset Button.  Which settings
will I lose - and how do I save them?

Thanks

Not being html savvy I wonder if anyone can help me with a problem I have?

I recently created an update for my website and 600 or so pages were posted into
a sub folder called /02 (I have no idea why) which I then cut and pasted into
the parent folder and FTP'd the content of the parent folder to my website.

This has resulted in the pages created in the sub folder having incorrect URLs -
for example www.stepneyrobarts.co.uk/2/141647 which leads to a 404 page but if
you delete the /2 the correct page is displayed.

My question is: do I need to create a new sub folder on my host server named /2
and FTP the contents separately from the parent folder or is there a simpler
work around?

Thanks in advance.

If your pages are pedigree style...

On the Web Page Creation - Formatting tab bump up the Max File Count for
Maximum Web Pages in a Folder (if your ISP doesn't have a limit).

Hi David

I think that, by moving the sub-folder called /02 into the parent folder,
you have created the problem for yourself! No doubt all the links were
working between the pages (parent folder/files to /02/files and vice
versa), and you broke those links by moving everything into the parent
folder.

you said
"do I need to create a new sub folder on my host server named /2 and FTP
the contents separately from the parent folder or is there a simpler work
around?"

You don't need a "work-around", you should be able to FTP the parent
folder (i.e. all the files **and child folders**) to your website in one
go, without changing anything.

You must have a lot of pages, if you've exceeded the default 30,000 web
pages in a folder!! I agree with Dennis, it would be advisable to check
your ISP limits before bumping up the number.

Mary Young

Just reporting progress - or rather, lack of progress - on this problem.

Both my Focus Groups are now "sticking" in the middle of generating
the Pedigree pages. I have discovered that if I hit the "No" button
when asked "Yes" "No" or "Quit", the generation continues to the
finish.
The resulting site looks OK but who knows, there may be a page or
pages missing, and hence broken links.

I have reported this problem to Support and been given a ticket number.

Mary,

It's difficult to know what else to suggest here. From your details it would be
reasonable to assume that one individual rogue file is causing this, but its
spread to the other group rather indicates otherwise. Nor is it possible to
determine which file it might be either.

One thing has come to mind whilst typing this. Do you have LTools? If so you
will know that  for Pedigree pages it corrects Legacy's horrible code and
converts it to CSS, so it might just spot something. Yes, I know that you have
to generate the pages first, but you never know!

You may also try copying your focus groups into a new file and trying to create
your web pages from that. But, really I can only suggest things to try which
might indicate where the problem lies.

This is nothing to do with Legacy, but another page I'm preparing for
the local genealogy society.

I have an image that I want to fill the available space (in proportion
to the original size) on whatever screen it's shown on - is that possible?

Right now, the page I've quickly put together in Kompozer has this code,
with periods added to prevent it from running automatically:

<.body>
<.div style="text-align: center;"><.a
   href="http://www.genealogy.org.nz/"><.img
   style="border: 0px solid ; width: 500px; height: 707px;"
   alt="Family History is cool"
   src="file:///C:/Users/wendy/Dropbox/NZSG%20Facebook/FHM-2012-Poster-v4.jpg"
   align="top"><./a><.br>
<./div>
<./body>

The image is set as a link to take you to the web site of the New
Zealand Society of Genealogists (www.genealogy.org.nz).

If what I want is possible, what would I need to change/include? I'm
not very good at HTML (I can interpret it to a point, but don't sit down
and code by hand), so I need specifics, please.

Thanks in advance for your help. :-)

Wendy,

That image is rather large even for a PC. Normally the maximum height/width used
would be 500px. The main problem with big pictures is the size in Mb and
consequent long loading times. Secondly the path to the image is to that on your
PC, and will not, therefore be displayed on a website. The path should be either
the path to a location on your web host, or a URL if it is stored "in the
cloud".

To clarify what you are trying to do, is it your intention for the image to be
proportionately displayed no matter what device is being used to view the site
i.e. mobile, tablet, netbook or PC etc.? If so you would probably need to
consider building this flexibility into the whole of your site. This would
involve quite a bit of coding.

From the context, I assume you are not talking about a background image.

Maybe try setting the img to height:100%; width:auto; or width:100%;
height:auto; ?

From the context, I assume you are not talking about a background image.

Maybe try setting the img to height:100%; width:auto; or width:100%;
height:auto; ?

I basically agree on your definition of an em, although I thought it was a lower
case "m". However, that does not affect the idea.

Without checking, I am very uncertain as to whether it is fixed as being
equivalent to the size of the font as specified originally or whether it is
relative to a current font size.

I asked Wendy to let us know exactly what she meant, because she could have
meant on different types machine - PC, tablet etc., which is how I read her
post. In this case I am reasonably certain that the font size is scaled to suit
the machine, and, possibly therefore, an em.

Hi Ron

Thanks for pointers to Xenu and LTools DeLuxe, I've now installed both.
However, neither shows up anything significant in the html of my Pedigree
Pages. Anyway, this Error 5 is occurring during web page production, so I
think the cause must be with Legacy itself or my database.

Could someone running the latest version of Legacy, do me a favour and
generate Pedigree Pages for a Focus Group for one individual and
descendants, the Group to consist of 400+ individuals? It seems as if I
can generate Pedigree Pages for smaller groups, of perhaps 40 or 120
people, but for more people I run into Error 5.

Mary,

I appreciate your comment re the error is being created in your Legacy creation
process, but you can now be assured that the comment in your last post "who
knows, there may be a page or pages missing, and hence broken links" is not the
case.

I would recommend that you continue using LTools as not only does it get rid of
Legacy's HTML bugs it also generates a CSS which enable fine tuning of your
pages - I give details on its use in the Tutorial Section of my website. Also I
really recommend Xenu for checking for broken links - I run this after every
update!

I am not sure if I have a Family Group of more than 400, I will have a look and
if so give it a run.

Mary,

I do have a Focus Group of more than 500 (descendant group - if that makes a
difference) from which I created Pedigree Pages without problems. I used the
default Pedigree page settings. Have you tried using the default set up btw.?

Ron,

Thanks for running that test (I assume Descendant Group means an Individual
and all Descendants?)

Yes, I have made a clean install of the latest version of Legacy, on a
computer which has never seen Legacy before - and used the default Pedigree
Page settings. Still getting the Error 5 - both with my current database
and with a Restore from Backup of August 2008!!

I already have some have some clumsy CSS (written years ago) which pulls my
website header and footer into the Legacy pages. It works OK and doesn't
appear to be causing this error 5. In an ideal world, I would buff up my
acquaintance with CSS, and tidy up - but life is short and getting shorter
by the minute. :-)

Mary,

I know that you said that you had looked up Error 5, so I take it that you have
tried deleting all the usr files (pain as it is?). I can only suggest that you
contact Legacy Support - I'm afraid that I have run out of ideas now!

Hi Ron

Yes, I went to the Help Files first - the suggestions were update to
current version (which I'm already using) and deleting the .usr files (made
no difference).

Yes, I have contacted Support. Their suggestion was, a complete clean-up of
my drive, a-v, malware, defrag etc. and then a clean install of the latest
version of Legacy. I was reluctant to undertake all that, without any
real hope of improvement. So instead, I installed Legacy on a machine
which has *never* had Legacy installed - and the problem still persists.

Thanks for your replies, Ron and Dennis. :-)

Your concerns over the size and location of the image are noted. The
location is temporary as we're going to be using a new URL and haven't
organised where it will be hosted yet - that's under way now. The size
will no doubt change to something more optimal.

As it stands, someone else has taken over the creation of this web page
since I posted my query, and it's now out of my hands.

Thanks again for taking the time to help me. :-)

Kind Regards,
Wendy

Yes, I have started using SourceWriter for census entries. But not for

The reason I asked is because I was going to suggest exporting your file
to a gedcom and then importing it back into a new database. But
SourceWriter sources don't export/import cleanly.

You might want to try the export/import thing anyway just to see if the
Error 5 disappears. But it obviously isn't an actual solution for you
because of the SW thingy.

Thanks Dennis

I will test after export to Gedcom as you suggested. But "no gain without
loss" I thought I was doing great, starting to use SW - and have put many
hours into upgrading my census entries to SW format ... :-( it will be
interesting to see how they export/impot.

Mary,

I use SW and in general am quite happy with it, although I have not, and very
much doubt if I ever will, change my old basic ones.

The problems with GEDCOMs are that the way different companies tag their SW type
files in different ways, means that they tend to arrive insomething like a basic
format ( I am being very loose here!!)
