Re: [WalthamForestFilm] Producer needed for East London based short film

Hi Paul,

Just wanted to say how great that you're doing this! It really put a smile on my face when I saw it. I'm too busy to apply, sadly - but if I can help further down the line, if you get stuck for something or other, don't hesitate to get in touch. My son is now 17 and studying performing arts in the 6th form at Walthamstow Academy, so I should think he and his friends might be up for helping out if you need some unpaid extras/runners/cable carriers.

I spoke to Ahmed recently and we said we'd get together for a coffee one day; I don't know whether you'd like to join us?

Regards,
Heather

Subject: [WalthamForestFilm] Producer needed for East London based short film

Title: North by Northeast

We are looking for a dedicated, enthusiastic, enterprising and ideally London-based, hands-on producer, who will be willing and able to co-ordinate fund raising and assist with the organisation of all stages of the production process.

About the Film:
North by Northeast is an East London-set poignant drama about loss, illegal immigration, identity and DVDs; a realistic yet highly cinematic character piece with subtle allusions to North by Northwest.

A grey concrete concourse outside a huge supermarket, many Chinese DVD sellers sell their wares. We focus on Wang as he goes through the dehumanising daily cycle of the life of a DVD seller: endless selling, packing up and moving on, haggling, being abused by passers-by, the constant threat of a police crackdown, and the unseen hand of his criminal master. Wang is further hindered by being stuck with a seemingly un-sellable classic DVD.

Wang originally came to London alone to earn enough money to bring his family here, but the promised work never materialized. Now he's trapped in a guilt-ridden, semi-criminal hinterland, sending what little he can back home to his Wife and sick daughter, Bia. Wang has nearly saved enough to start her treatment – but considering his daily earnings his target still seems nearly impossible.

Wang comes into contact with a lonely but friendly old man, Mr Bennett. Wang is cheered by the fact someone has actually noticed him, but communication between the two is difficult and halting. They both share a common sense of loss: Mr Bennett, the death of his wife and the loss of his family home due to the dual-carriageway that cuts the neighbourhood in two; and Wang the loss of his family, who are thousands of miles away. They strike up a rapport. But his fledgling friendship with Mr Bennett presents Wang with some difficult choices, and he struggles to do the right thing.

About the Filmmakers:
Andrew Hutton (Director) is an experienced network television director with credits for all UK network channels in documentaries and drama-docs, who is now crossing over into drama.

The script is by Paul Nash, who has written of a number of short films, many of which have played at UK and international film festivals, and a couple of them award-winning.

If interested please email Paul Nash on pauldavidnash@googlemail.com

All the best

Paul Nash
