Statement

We view with alarm recent events in Egypt, where, following protests for the independence of the judiciary, pro-reform judges and their supporters have been beaten by riot police and arrested. Between 24 and 27 April campaigners taking part in protests at the Judges' Club and the Ministry of Justice in Cairo were attacked by the police and around fifty have been arrested.
According to the New York Times, up to 10,000 riot police were deployed in central Cairo on 27 April, beating judges and their supporters who had come  to express solidarity with judges Hisham Bastawisi and Mahmoud Mekki at  their disciplinary hearing at the Ministry of Justice. The two judges  exposed fraud in the recent parliamentary elections. Journalists covering the protests have been attacked and threatened by police, and in a separate incident, the chief of the Al Jazeera TV bureau has also been arrested.
We wish to express our distress at the brutal treatment of peaceful  demonstrators calling for legal reform. Among those beaten by the police was Judge Mahmoud Mohamed Abdel Latif Hamza, Chief Judge of the North Cairo  Court. We oppose this attempt to silence voices in the judiciary and the media who have exposed electoral fraud, state violence and corruption.

We condemn the actions of the Egyptian police in attacking the protests. We also condemn the further detention of the protestors under a 15 day extension and the charges brought against them of disturbing public peace and order. We call upon the Egyptian authorities to show respect for human rights and the independence of Egyptian judiciary by releasing the detainees without delay.

Signed:
