ARMSTRONG WHITWORTH WHITLEY BOMBER "G" GEORGE 221 STATIONED AT STANTON
HARCOURT SATELITE OF 10 OTU ABINGDON OXFORDSHIRE
Took off from Stanton Harcourt at 21.50 hrs on 13 th August 1944
was shot up over France and made it back to England and crashed in an
orchard at West Ashton South England
parts of the arcraft were in the orchard but front fusalage was laid
across tyhe main street close to the cottages. Rear end with gun
turret was lodged against an apple tree. wings seperated and so did
the engines.time of crash 04.10 hrs
Darkie assisted and lit up a drome landing strip but engines quit
before drome was reached.
cause anti air craft shells exploding striking both engines and
causingg fires in both engines.
Another Whitley crashed some few miles away the same night and the rear
gunner was killed in that crash.
The RAF did not count crashed training aircraft as missing or dmagaed.
