I was flying as A/G in Whitleys 1942/43 at 10 OTU at Abingdon Oxon.
My prospected operationial service ended abruptly Oct 42 due to pilot error, amidst broken metal lots of burning metal, petrol, amunition & bodies etc after a short time in hospital for minor injuries I was used as an instructor while they decided what to do with me. Finaly grounding me early 43.
I obtained about 15 years ago a copy of the crash report, among other things it mentions 3 killed 2 injured. I can add to that those killed were the Pilot, Wireless operator & Bomb aimer, he reached the ground first as he was in the front turret.
The Observer escaped severly injured with a little help from myself with both legs broken & burns which needed treatment at the guinea pig club & was discharged medicaly unfit from the R.A.F
I last met him during my embakation
leave Dec 43 We went for my only visit to Simpsons in the Strand for lunch I had by then retraind as a Fitter Marine A.S.R. Sadly I lost touch when oue launch was sunk & I lost his address. He did not contact me & at that time he was living in Surbiton southeast London when V weapons were falling & I have often wondered if that was the reason
If you want a copy of the crash report & or a full account of the event please contact me.
